Manager- Nadine Zellmer 30 The 1983 Cross Country team had 8 members. 5 boys and 3 girls. There were 3 returning letter win- ners; Ed Nagel. Matt Towery, and Randy Polk. The team was coached by Mr. Lloyd, who has coached this sport for nine seasons. He enjoys it because he gets the chance to work with people on more of an individual basis. The best meets were Laconia Spar- tan Invitational, because the times were the best of the year for all runners, and the Conference meet at Rio. because the girls were able to get a team score with the help of Marci Mast and Wendy Gardner. Claude Haerr-He has learned alot this year I expect more next year. Chris Campion-He shows promise despite not having a bone in his body. He has a future as a contortionist. Mike Stewart-He works some of his best moves in the hall waiting for biology to start. Scott Turner-He has developed the “disappearance hold , which he practices extensively when we carry mats upstairs. Steve Hunter-He has developed the What Me!” escape. Usually used when in a jam. Dale Mertely-What can be said of a person who has two Knicknames. Squirtly or Merts. Poorest broomball goalie on the team. Paul Hunter-The Wog . He would rather know the opponent’s grade than his record or weakness. Jeff Gilbertson-The Unofficial Coach, who can call off practice at a moments notice. Bill Vanderheyden-He has the longest name on the team. Mike Maulson-Soon to be renamed Eureka” because he is always dusting the mat. Andy Owens-He is known throughout the state as the voice behind Dan Troost. Andy Gabryshak-He doesn't know the maning of the word fear . He should wise up next year. Matt Pomplun-Chris Campion's understudy when they put their contortionist act on the road. David Haerr-What can I say that I haven’t already said behind his back. David Bornick-He had a tough year but hung in there. He will soon get a job with a architecture firm designing gym ceilings. Coach Campion- Use your own whistle, the one with the white string. Rainey. 35 “I am very pleased with last year’s softball season,” said Koch. “I feel that the team lived up to the expectations of the coaches and the players, which is very important.” He said, “The girls went out and played every game to their fullest, they gave it their all,” and that loosing to Cambria was probably the best thing that ever happened, because “you have to know what it means to win.” Mr. Koch is calling this year our building year, because of the fact that the team will have to fill the positions of girls who were around two and three years ago. There were many freshman who joined the girls track team and Coach Behm was very pleased with this turnout of freshman and the talent they showed. “Yes, we had injuries,” Coach Behm said with a sigh. “We lost Jessica Paul and some freshman because of injuries.” Lisa Campion took three All- Conference medals in the long- jump, 100 meter, and 200 meter. She also added to the three All Conference medals, first place in the 100 meter and second in the 100 meter and second in the 200 meter at sectionals and at state to take the same places. 1st row: M Quinn. (Jr. Class Zrip After our first meeting, 128 days seemed so far away Until we’d go to Florida for our seven-day heaven stay. There was a possibility that we could fly, But the idea seemed too high in the sky. Soon we had to shop for summer clothes. Even though we were suffering with frostbitten toes. 10. 9. 8. 7. 6. 5. 4. 3. 2, 1! Soon we’d all be basking in the sun. Saturday, March 26, we arrived at MHS with our bags, So our chaperones could distribute airplane baggage tags. At that meeting, we soon found out: We’d be leaving at midnight without a doubt. We all went home to sleep in our beds, But couldn’t because visions of Florida filled our heads. Midnight came and so did a blizzard, So our bus had to move like a lizzard. An hour had passed when we arrived in Pardeeville To wait for Ivan against our will. Many of us flew out of the bus like a streak Into Herreman’s for relief. Tammy got obnoxious saying. “Belvidere Oasis!” Everyone got sick of her and gave her dirty faces. We arrived early in Chicago five hours later. So Mr. Sveum gave us a tour, and we sure did hate ’er. While Mr. Johnson was snoozing at O’Hare, Some students put toothpast on his facial hair. Sunday afternoon, to the Magic Kingdom we went Where a glorious eight hours were spent. The next two days we could do as we pleased: Go to Wet-n-Wild. Circus or Sea World or watch our tvs. At Circus World, elephants were ridden by Laurie and Jill. When asked who wanted to ride, they said. “We will!” To Epcot Center, we went Monday night And explored new worlds to our delight. Tuesday, we could go either to Magic Kingdon or Epcot To finish up all we had forgot. Wednesday morning and Kennedy Space Center came so soon. We took a tour and found out how astronauts get to the moon. Toothpaste was put on Jeff and Jim King’s sleeping faces on the bus, But they were good sports and didn’t make much of a fuss. For three nights, we stayed at Quality Inn on the ocean. Here we used tons and tons of suntan lotion. Wednesday night, we had a campfire on the beach, Hot dogs, buns, and marshmallows were brought by each. A few girls found some hunky men, A couple of whom were desperately avoided in the end. Thursday, we went to Marineland Where all of the dolphins got a big hand. Mike W., Matt, and Donn built a sand castle, And anyone who ruined it was sure to get a hassle. Chris was buried in the sand. All that was left uncovered were her head, feet, and hand. Jim Kratz. Melanie. Rod. and Karen got sunburnt bad. They looked like a lobster and acted like a crab. Mr. Sveum dressed up funny With gunk in his hair and lipstick on his tummy. Jeff dressed like a girl and shaved his legs. He even wore panty hose that came out of eggs. Mike K., Kelli. Todd, Mary, and Ed all wore sheets. The three guys even ran from room to room giving candy treats Some people played poker in Mr. Sveum’s room. If they didn’t let him win, his head was sure to fume. We all kept playing tricks more and more. Little did we know that it would lead to a full-fledged war. • Our weapons were toilet paper, aftershave, and toothpast gel. We even wrote notes on mirrors with Prell. Friday night, we went to St. Augustine for a real meal. We were told. “Eat wherever you feel.” Saturday morning, we left for the airport at 5:30. No time was spent primping to make ourselves purty. The plane ride home went very fast. Like everything else, we couldn’t make it last. In a few hours, the temperature dropped forty degrees. Our class trip was all over — Oh geez! The bus ride home was kind of fun. But. of course, it wasn’t like the first one. Thinking of our class trip as being over makes us sad But it shouldn’t: just remember all those great times we had! 60 flr. Class Trip 61 Winter Home The Winter Homecoming Court 1984 is made up of 2 members from each winter sport along with 2 seniors for King Queen. Homecoming Week Jan. 23- 27. 1984. Spirit Week: Monday: 50’s day. Tuesday: Twin Day. Wednesday: Teacher Famous Person Look-Alike. Thursday: Crazy Day. JV. and Wrestling Cheerleaders joined forces to put on wild pep rally Mrs. Brenner decided to test our athletes “Sex Appeal by a kissing contest. These macho guys thought they were getting a kiss from one of the cheerleaders, but what a surprise, it was their mothers!! During Crazy Week. Ms Maasz decided to get besides the redecorating, she wrote “Sweet even with someone who told her she reminded Nothings on his board, him of an empty diskette There was a fantastic turnout at Friday's game as spectators came to see if the winning streak would hold ALL TEAMS WON THEIR EVENTS!! f 2 Music for the dance was provided by 1000 Proof Rock. The Dance Theme was “Take a Chance.” Finally came the dance and we all rocked the night away! The graduating class of 1984 has had a special advantage, Ivan De la Guardia. Ivan is a FFA Exchange Student from Panama. He became a Montello High School student two years ago, as a junior. Ivan is a member of National Honor Society. He participated in football, basketball, and baseball Ivan will be most remembered for his outgoing personality, friendliness, and love of fruit loops!!! We all love ya, The Class of '84 63 Homecoming 64 1983 “The Homecoming that wasn’t. That’s what students will be saying years from now about the 1983 MHS Homecoming. On October 4. Mr. Klug made the final decision that all privileges except the Friday night game and dance be cancelled. The greatest concern that caused the cancellations was the theft of road signs, since this could cause serious accidents.’’ says Mr Schwitz. When asked why all the students were being punished. Schwitz replied with Something had to be done, and if no one would admit to these thefts everyone would be punished, hoping students would join together using peer pressure to make the guilty parties confess. Mr. Schwitz says this will made a definite impression on more upcoming Homecomings. There will be stricter guidelines and the first time something is done wrong it will be properly taken care of. The layering of shirts, leg- warmers, and socks are a great way to keep warm and stay in fashion. THE WAY WE WERE Memories light the corners ot my mind. Misty water color memories of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind, smiles we gave to one another for the way we were. Can it be that it was all so simple then, or has time rewritten every line? If we had the chance to do it all again, tell me would we? Could we? Memories may be beautiful, and yet, what's too painful to remember we simply choose to forget.
