The Scobies had that quality, that glow, which Benjamin Bradlee called That Special Grace. Here were two individuals who for a combined total of sixty-six years were in our midst, teaching our parents and us; but this teaching was more to them than the drumming of tedious facts, more than just a job that had to be gotten over with. To them the subjects which they taught were living and tangible, and they made you feel their pulsating life. When Miss Bernice read Frost or Sandburg, you knew that she loved great literature; and when she slaved with you, word by word, over a for- ensics oration, you could feel her love of proper syntax and of the symmetry of a well-constructed sentence; and when Miss Irene discussed the glory and the throes of history, you felt that she understood the message of the heaving past that produced the stormy present; and when she attacked with you the agonies of a complicated research project, you knew that she love knowledge for the horizons that it opened, as well as for itself. It was not through their teaching alone, however, that this quality, this glow, was manifest; it was also in their day-to-day lives that touched and warmed everyone, teacher and student alike. For if you remember the nights, weekends, and holidays of forensics rehearsals and typing file cards unnoticed by those at the game or party, if you remember the tears over a dying father that they dried while others walked by, if you remember those special words said when you left for the weekend or the holidays that you never quite had a reply for, if you remember those long talks after school when others were too tired or too busy, then you remember a unique, inexplicable quality of the soul, a rare glow---then you remember That Special Grace.
