We felt as though we belonged here in the fall of 1949 and we enjoyed our turn at initiating the greenhorns. Our big event in our Junior year was the prom. King George Thomp- son and Queen June Kelm lead the grand march to music played by Tony Winters and his orchestra. Moonlight and Roses was the theme for the rose bedecked gymnasium. Also in our junior year we flashed shiny new class rings. Then our senior year came and twenty-three of us still remained to graduate together. Senior Skip Day and the Senior Class Play were the outstanding events of our final year. Those four happy years seemed to rush past, but we will all remem- ber and cherish them. WILLIAM B. OUR PROM KING AND QUEEN George Thompson and June Kelm JUNIOR CLASS Our junior class this year lost two students, Marcella Chenoweth and Arnold Koeppe, leaving us with 41 mem- bers. One of our big moments during the year was on November 21, when we received our class rings. Of course, our biggest event was the junior prom which was held on April 18, the grand march being led by King Donald Utke with his Queen, Phyllis Czeskleba. to the strains of the theme, Stairway to the Stars. The music was furnished by the Searl Pickett Orchestra. 1° y, .V-C V v Sophomore Class Out of the 47 Freshmen who started Montello High School last year. 41 returned. November 16 we held our initiation party in the gymnasium for the Freshmen. All the upper classmen were invited. Driver's Education under the instruction of Mr. Con- stance was held on Tuesdays for the boys and Thursdays for the girls. A series of Safety Driving movies were also shown. H. S. In the course of the year we lost Janyce Beckman. We were officially initiated November 16' The boys appeared in gunny sacks, silk stockings, and hair bows. The girls were very fashionable with upswept hair-do's men's shoes, socks, and ties and blouses and skirts turned inside out. The Freshman Return Party was on January 11. On behalf of science , we took a trip to Madison. Places visited were the museum, observatory, and radio station. ANNUAL STAFF The 1952 Granite Hilltopper mem- bers have contributed toward the publication of this year's annual. Everyone was assigned duties and completed them nicely under the guidance of Miss Irene Scobie. We wish to thank Ann Nikolai and Bob Schinkel for their artistic contributions. BAND Echoing through the halls, can still be heard the strains of the peppy band with which Montello is credited. The familiar figure of Mr. Anderson about the school for five months was missed when he resigned in January. Our band led the Homecoming Parade with colors, played for the pep rally, football and basketball games, Farmer's Institute, Grade School Teacher's Convention, and plans to take part in the Music Festival on April 19 and May 3. The Montello High School Band is progres- sing rapidly under our new director, Mr. Week. Our band received the following awards at the Music Festival at Westfield last spring: M.H.S. Band ...... The Chorus participated in the Senior Class play, and will take part in the Junior-Senior Banquet, Commencement Exercises, and the Wautoma Music Festival, April 19 and May 3. SENIOR .. . GIRLS' CHORUS At the 1951 District Music Festival held at Westfield, the Girls' Glee Club received an Award II, the sextet con- sisting of Donna Ritchie. Ila Whirry, Rita Polcyn, Eunice Metcalf, Mary Ann Inman, and Mary Jane Mateske, an Award I; and a duet rendered by Ruth and Janis Robinson, an Award II. The quartet which was composed of Ruth Robinson, Geraldine Kusick, Florence Steinhaus, and Mary Jane Mateske won a starred I rating at Westfield and a first place in the State Music Contest at Madison. All of these groups were entered in Class B under the direction of Miss Bernice Scobie. The Junior Chorus consists of the Freshmen and more girls this year. The chorus enables the girls to sing with a group and become better singers. During the second semester four girls were selected from the Junior Chorus for the Senior Chorus. They are: Janice Maynard, Shirley Bornick, Donna Toepper, and Loretta Wheaton. Many of the girls will be members of the Senior Chorus next year. JUNIOR . . . GIRLS' CHORUS ROW J: Mr. Anderson. The Press Club held its first meeting in Nov- ember with Mrs. Irene Szewiola as adviser. There were 30 members who attended that and subsequent meetings. Our school paper was included in the Montello Tribune as part of the regular community newspaper. It ap- peared about three times a month for the re- mainder of the school year. The student Co-Editors — Joyce Kieck and Ann Nikolai — were the first of the group to receive their Press Club pins for having ten of their articles printed. Many other active contributors to the paper also did a splendid job. Thanks to the effort and time contributed by these students, EMAYCHESS VIEWS has made our school a living institution even for those who do not come in contact with M. H. S. in their daily lives.
