Good Citizen, Margaret Schmitz Advisers ......Mr. Kiger, Mr. Whirry ’3 7- ’3 8 In September, 1946, Montello High School opened its doors to 45 freshmen. The big event of the year was initiation day. In the fall of 1947, we were more confident as we returned to our classes. This year it was our turn to initiate the greenhorns. In our Junior year the big event was the Junior Prom. King Duane Schwartz and Queen Carolyn Hintz led the Prom goers through the grand march. Our junior year saw us all showing off new class rings and also earned for us the right to attend the Junior-Senior Banquet. Only 31 of the original 45 were together in our senior year. Senior Skip Day and the Senior Class Play were two of the outstanding events of the senior year. Finally commencement and we bid farewell to our high school days. JUNIOR CLASS The school year found us with 31 members over the 35 of last year. However, we lost Ed- ward Timm and gained Stephen Flaherty during the second semester. Our big social event of the year was our Junior Prom. It was held April 28 in the gymnasium featuring Tony Winters and his Orchestra. Dan Schwochert as King, and his queen, Donna Ritchie, led the Grand March. The theme selected was “In An Old Dutch Garden”. SOPHOMORE CLASS When school resumed this year 38 of the original 43 members of our class returned. At our initiation party, September 29, the girls looked stunning with their dresses reversed and wearing pigtails and the boys were just as at- tractive with their knee length trousers and long hose. Sophomores usually aren't too active, ex- cept in sports and music, but be on the lookout for news about us next year. The girls wore their dresses inside out with socks and shoes that didn’t match, while the boys came with ribbons in their hair, wearing their mother’s stockings and their trousers rolled up to their knees. To show we held no grudges, we gave the Sopho- mores a return party on November 10. 950 Granite Hiltopper Staff have done their best to make of pleasant memories for you. to show our appreciation to Ebert for her artistic contributions. We have played Adams- Friendship, Marquette, Westfield and the Alumni and won all of the games. We plan to enter the tournament which will be held at Westfield this year. B” SQUAD Due to the loss of seven seniors this year, the second team, will play an important part in the making up of next year’s team. Under the coach- ing of Mr. Ball the second team had a fairly successful season. Individual points are obtained by these means and at the close of the school year medals are given to three leaders in each the boys' and girls’ activities. GIRLS' BASEBALL The girls’ team to date hasn’t been too active. On October 31 a group of girls was selected to play the Westfield girls’ team. We won 14-8. There will be a return game this spring. We started late in the season, but with two weeks of practice we played Princeton and lost in the last few seconds of the game. Next year we figure on getting an early start, and everyone is looking forward to having an 11-man team in a few years. BASEBALL Baseball has been reserved as a spring sport this year . The loss of several players in the class of 1948 left the team weak for a spring schedule last year. We are looking forward to a successful season as we still have many of the team of ‘49 with us.
