It is symbolized by f o o t b a 11 games, loud excited voices, and bright colors, blue ,ll gold at MHS. This is the time the student government takes office and sophomores enter Oilerville. The somber period is Winter. Trees lose their leaves, colors are subtle, and voices are hushed. The Christ- mas activities predominate this season. Spring is the awakening time when light pastel colors make their debut. Voices of Spring are full of anti- cipation, excitement, and herald the arrival of summer vacation. ff 0, fi . yt A t. ,5yQ3WCWWhe Seo ns if .2 WZWW W 7 W r0bA?ffZfMVf jWd9fwQZZ7 MR. GEORGE M. He has shown great speed and maneu- verability, winding up the ,57 season with a total yardage of 742 - carrying the ball 114 times for an average of 6:5 yards per carry. This has been Bagwellls best year, as he has scored a total of 15 TD,s. The Bagvvell's have been a long time support of Montebello with Gary, Don and Ken Bagwell, and with Bob's departure, will end the tradition of football from the Bagwells at Montebello, a great loss in any- one's book. Valuable Player ds ROGER KELLY During the f o o t b a ll season Kelly played passing quarter- back and 'averaged 52 yards a pass with 96 passes attempt- ed with 50 of these completed for a final total of 856 yards. Kelly was also honored the Times newspaper as choice of Athlete of the W of November 15. AL PETRUSHKIN One of the key pass re- ceivers on the O i l e r squad is Al Petrushkin who received 14 pass- es for a total of 219 yards. He is also listed as one of the highest scorers with 24 points. Petrushkin had the re- cord for the most pass- es received out of all the other receivers. BILL BARTON Barton, who weighs in at more than 190 lbs., was considered superi- or to last yearys tackles by the Oiler coaching staff. He played B foot- ball in his sophomore year and saw mostly IV action last year. 30 FRANK CRUZ Guard F r a n k Cruz showed g r e a t talent during the football sea- son as he kept the de- fending t e a m s away from the Oiler squad and showed that he had great ability in this field. L A .., I .. .51 OTIS MCCURRIE Though weak on blocking last year, McCurrie was considered the best receiv- ing end on the team. But, due to an injury was unable to continue and was re- placed by Al Petrushkin in end position. 'X BILL DOUGLAS Second passer for the team is Bill Douglas who during the season c a r r i e d the ball 22 times for a total of 24 yards with an average of 1.6 yards a carry. He also passed the ball 12 times with 5 completes for a total of 145 yards. GORDON DOTSON Dotson played behind all GIF center Bob Edwards all of last sea- son, a n d during this year he almost kept up with his record. Al- though not as strong as Edwards, Dotson was fast and blocked well, a g 0 o d characteristic in centers. ,..ls,,i Y LOUIE SANCHEZ Louie received an in- jury during the non- league season and was unable to participate in League play, but dur- ing the season carried the ball 145 times for a total of 96 yards for a 6.9 average yards per carry. TERRY APPELL Terry Appell was con- sidered the second best p a s s receiver on the team as he received and completed 11 p a s s e s for a total yardage gain of 225 yards. He also scored two TD,s for a total of 12 points. Ap- pell has been quite an asset to the team in the last two years. DON WATKINS Another improved play- er, Watkins was a first string offensive guard on the varsity squad last season. This year he played at the offen- sive line-backer s p o t and did quite well in this position. NORM BASKIN Rated as second highest scorer on the Football team is Norm Baskin with 36 points due to touchdown plays. He was also pass receiver and completed 12 passes for a total of 246 yards. The number of times he carried the ball is 78 for a total of 827 with a 4.2 average. GARY F ARR Gary Farr, 149 pound guard, did a terrific job of blocking at this post- tion and was seen in many of the decisive plays of the games, tackling his man and keeping him down. JIM Bonus Bodle is a good gridded and has great leadership ability. As a sophomore he was on the IV spuad, and he earned his varsity letter last year. He is speedier than the average prep tackle, and Coach Stew Pike, related that ne excells last year's tackles by far.. RON NUNO F ullback R o n Nuno, senior, carried the ball twice for a gain of 18 yards with an average of nine yards per carry, which is a good aver- age in anyone's book. 31 AL TURRENTINE AI Turrentine, fullback, was rated as one of the great players on t h e team as he carried the ball 17 times for a total of 60 yards with a 3.2 yard average. He was also awarded a trophy being the most valuable player during the Homecoming Game. BOB BAGWELL Complete statistics for the Oiler varsity foot- ball squad's 1957 sea- son of eleven games, including two playoff playoff tilts, show that three - year letterman Bob Bagwell led Mon- tebello scoring and also in rushing. 6 Nh 5 5' 'Q' I .ef ' 'W f ' ' ,dvi v V K .1 I ai- x dl. Joining in the festivities of Homecoming Day are some of the loyal Oilers, who rode in the parade after school. '?x?xil?q1 Montebello 19 EI Rancho 8 Loyal Oilers and many Montebello families showed their concem at all of the Montebello games and seemed to be a big factor in the sportsmanship trophy race. Quarterback Roger Kelly receives good blocking from a team defender who proceeds to open a hole in which Kelly succeeded in making a good gain. RUBEN CENERA Half back In their first game of League competition the Oilers had a real scare as the Dons scored in the first part of the game to take the lead, only to have the Oilers come from behind to top them by a 19-8 score in this initial SGVL tilt. The Dons lead when Kelly was caught behind his own lines and scored a saftey followed directly by a touch- down pass. But the Oilers fought back and Oiler scorers were Bob Bagwell, Terry Appel, and Ruben Genera, who scored the last TD of the game on a six-yard run. Last yearfs game against El Rancho was almost duplicated this year as they were only one TD away from last years score. BILL BARTON Tackle 36 Montebello l 9 Santa Fe 6 Montebello High's varsity gridders got another blg scare thrown into them in this game, but a second half rally paid off for the Oilers as they scored their second SCVL victory with a 19-6 decision over the Santa Fe Chiefs, thus remaining in the undefeated, untied ranks of CIF schools. Al Turrentine and Don Watkins were the two most outstanding players of the game. An Oiler player is met with opposition by a Santa Fe defender on this running play attempt, but still suc- ceeded in making yardage. Genera is stoppe d dead in his tracks by this Chief defender as Bob Bagwell comes to the rescue seconds too late. But the Oilers went on to defeat the Chiefs by a fair margin. RICHARD GABRIEL Tackle GARY F ARR Guard With adequate blocking from Simon Lopez and Al Petrushkin, Bob Bagwell runs back considerable yardage to help cinch an- other Oiler Victory. Montebello 24 Bellflower 6 Coach Stew Pikeis varsity footballers lengthened their perfect slate to seven wins no losses when they passed their way to a comfortable 24-6 victory over the fifth- place Bellflower Buccaneers. Roger Kelly led the Oiler passing attack into high gear against the Bucs as he completed six out of ten aerials, three of which were good for touchdowns. Unlike the last games, Pikels grid machine did not wait until the second half to get rolling but kept the ball in circulation throughout the complete game. ROGER KELLY Quarterback xiii.. Norm Baskin, leads the field of Buc Defenders as he seemingly makes a clean SWCCP of the gridiron to make considerable yardage. FRANK CRUZ Guard 38 Montebello 27 Colifornio 7 Head Coach Stew Pikes halftime advice again saved the day for the Montehellols varsity grid squad, as the Oilers knocked Califorina High out of contention for the SGVL crown with 11 27-7 come-from-behind win over the Condors in the next-to-last loop contest. DON WATKI N S Guard Cs. AL TURRENTINE F ullback Montebello 13 , Excelsior 6 Montebellcfs gridders gained the title of League champs as they defeated the Bucs 13-6, with this being the second times in a row the Oilers have copped the League title. Bagwell seemed to run the game as he carried the ball 20 times for a total of 118 yards and two touch- downs, while Norm Baskin ran the ball 18 times for 75 yards. Al Turrentine, star player for the first string defense, started the game by recovering a Pilot fumble, and was also seen blocking an attempted Held goal. Winning this game entitled the squad to travel to Mt. Sac to meet Chaitey High in CIF. Gliding through the air to help pull down Mighty Bob Bagwell is an Excelsior defender, as reinforcements come to the aid of the Oiler player. The Oilers downed the Pilots by a score of 13-6 to end GORDQN DOTSON the seison and to gain a second trip to the CIF Playoffs. BOB BAGWELL Halfback Montebello Son Diego 27 Bringing the 1957 season to a close, the Oiler Varsity footballers were eliminated from further CIF competition when they were downed by the San Diego Cavemen, 27-7. Good breaks just were not with the Oilers, as they Went deep into the Cavemen territory only to lose the ball on a fum- ble or interception. Due to the Cavemenis out- standing quarterback, Ezell Singleton, they had very little trouble as Singleton attemped six passes and completed six for a total of 140 yards. The Oilers were outdone in statistics for the first time this year, making 274 yards running and passing compared to San Diegois 399. In their first game of CIF competition, the Oiler gridders met the mighty Chaffey Tigers who held the Oilers back during the first quarter and scored the first half of the game. During the whole season the Montebello team was known as a second half team as they came from behind. Due to terrific passing and running they defeated the Chaffey Tigers and earned the chance to meet the San Diego Cavemen at E.L.A. Junior College the next Friday.
