Not that we don ' t have legitimate excuses ... we always do. There ' s at least one organization that wants to be photographed two weeks after graduation, sports pictures that disappear in June and can ' t be found until October, and a staff that unfortunately has to spend the summer earning money to pay the bills instead of preparing pages for the publisher. Getting things done as fast as possible just hasn ' t been a priority during the three years I ' ve managed °When ' °irst ' joined the yearbook staff, our office was on the second floor of Life Hall, ail but invisible to the eyes of most MSC students. Meetings saw a lot of attendance but the office was conspicuously dark at any other time Through the magic of overspending and tricky bookkeeping, we were building up and hiding at the same time a twenty thousand dollar deficit. And after two very badly received annuals, a poorly circulated year- book, and a paperback edition, the people who did think of us didn ' t rate us very highly. Nothing like a In 982 we moved to our new office in the Student Center Annex. I hod run for editor out of a possibly misguided sense of duty and, after a short but heated election battle, found my position extending a year into ■ — the past as all the work on the previous edition was dumped into my lap. The staff was new, very small, but worked well together despite differences in artistic opinion. Somehow we assembled two years worth of senior memories and brought our budget back into line with an eye toward conservative spending. At the same time it seemed that we were making ourselves more visible on campus, and I know anyone who couldn ' t find our offices open at least half the time wasn ' t trying very hard. We weren ' t perfect, but we were moving in the right direction. I think we still are. And I like to think that I ' m at least partially responsible for that. Regrets ' ? Look at my grades sometime or, better yet, spore me the embarassment. And I ' m not really satisfied with the job I ' ve done. The sports have never been covered well. The faculty is oil but absent. A lot of studerits appear more than once, though as more and more people cover their faces and cry Dori ' t take my picturel I make fewer apologies. And almost nothing in thecolor section (You were right, Dan) couldn t have worked as well in black and white. In addition, I find it taking more of an effort to leave the immediate vicinity of the Student Center to get a few extra candids. . . -r , i rv, + +h«.r But there hove been good things. I ' ve improved as a photographer. The yearbook has led me to other organizations so it ' s responsible for my positions as on entertainment reviewer for the Montclarion, a heavy metal DJ at WMSC-FM, and Class One Concerts historian. More recently I ' ve seen my photos in the Aquarian ' and the WNEW calendar. And, of course, I ' ve met on incredible bunch of people: ,,.,_, -Pat Hart, Stephanie Smith, Teri Lyons, and Sue Chauvette who made up for my administrative inadequacies ; -Bob CliffoS MIke Enny, Frank Palmieri, Barbara Reehl! I knew a guy in the class of ' 47. ' 48, ' 49, ' 50, ' 51, ' 52. and ' 53 who was a baton twirler. He had fifteen majors, twenty-three minors, and over one thousand five hundred friendship pictures. He was the only student who knew all the words to the school song Someone said he went right from the G.I. Bill to Medicare, before he actually graduated one summer with a major in Forestry and minors in Philosophy and Nutrition Back then he was unique. Today he ' s your average student. College has replaced the sandy beach with the high surf . . . the free Willie Nelson concert . . the mechanical bull that never needs coins It ' s Woodstock with respec- tablity ... a cloister with dating a port to weather out the economic storm There ' s nothing wrong with it It sure beats sitting around playing video gomes until you faint and rotating the garden hose. But with all those educated people running around, it can ' t help but have an impact on our future culture. The disease of the 1990 ' s is predictable; overqualification. A whole generation will emerge with seven or eight years of college who are too smart to work and too hungry not to. They ' ll be able to fill out job applications in seven lan- guages as they become the oldest professional students in North America When your teacher looks at you and says. Didn ' t I teach your father? and you ARE the father, it ' s been too long. When you take o course in the History of the Croissant just because it ' s on the first floor, you ' ve overstayed. When you ' re asked a question in Ancient History of Civilization and you ' re the only one who knows the an- swer because you were there, it ' s time to move on When you try out for cheerleader arxj you have to palm off your varicose veins as textured stockings, you ' ve had It It used to be you graduated and you got a job In the 1980 ' s you don t take a chortce.
