Because of this, the Industrial Studies Club and the Home Economics Club joined forces and manufactured 100 sheet- metal sleighs filled with homemade cookies. This event was soon known to be Operation Sleighride by mem- bers of both clubs and the college community. Under the direction of Vince Wolencik, Industrial Studies Club Advisor and Michael Wujek, American Industrial Arts College Stu- dent Association President and mem- ber of the Industrial Studies Club and Department, the club built these sleighs from scratch. Members from both clubs helped in the construction of these gifts. Operation Sleighride occurred on December 16, 1982 in the Metals Lab of Finley Hall. A great deal of be- forehand preparation made the event run smoothly. The Home Eco- nomics Club baked approximately 1500 homemade cookies which were packaged and placed in the sleighs. The members of the Home Econom- ics Club came and helped in the packaging of the cookies along with the actual making of the sleighs. Members of the Industrial Studies Club also helped with the baking of the cookies. The next day, members from both clubs traveled to Mountainside and St. Joseph ' s Hospitals to deliver these sleighs. Vice-President James Burns, Club Member Donna Furukawo, and Sergeant-At-Arms Chuck Banghart dressed up as elves and Santa Clous to deliver the gifts to the children. The day brought a little sunshine into the hearts of the children who could not go home for the holidays and the members of the clubs who brought such happiness to them. GRADUATION W ' i f ' ' t ' .i Commencement 1983 Today we prepare to leave Montclair State College ready to meet the challenges that lie ahead ot us and I am confident that we have acquired the necessary skills that will enable us to meet those challenges. As we reflect back to the first days of our arrival here, we are reminded of the uncertainty that existed in each one of us; unsure of what to expect, When I was asked to speak at commencement, I began thinking about how to describe my four years at Montclair. After reminiscing about everything we have all been through, I thought of all the fun I had with my friends; those long nights before finals when we studied until four in the morning, complaining every minute; and about the good times in the Rathskeller and the long registration lines. Today I realize how exciting all this was and how much I am going to miss it. 1 don ' t think any of us would have made it through without our friends and our own desires to succeed. It has often been said that the friends we made at college are those we will have for life. For that I am grateful, for 1 have met some of the most outstanding people in my life here and I am happy to call them my friends. Montclair has given us discipline even though there were times when we did not always want it. It has given direction but allowed us our freedom to look away and do as we thought best. It has given us a place to remember who we are and how we grew. There are numerous people that we owe a great deal of thanks. To the Trustees and Administration for providing the wisdom and the leadership needed to better enhance our academic life; and to the Faculty for their continual guidance and sharing of knowl- edge. Yet, perhaps the most important people who need thanking today are our parents; for they are the ones who sacrificed along with us; who ' s love and devotion gave us inward strength to pick us up from defeat and forge ahead towards excellence. Our parents share an overwhelming pride in each graduate, especially their own; and we should recip- rocate by showing our pride for them; because they are graduating with us. They have lived through the schedules, term papers, exams and finally this gradu- ation day as well. As we look forward, we do so with the knowledge that has been given to us, assured that we are better prepared to encounter the future that lies ahead. Our memories and friendships will be with us forever. It is my hope for all of us today that we will use the wisdom received here at Montclair State College to work for a better tomorrow; reaching into the future . . . and never forgetting the past. Again, congratulations to the graduating Class of 1983 and thank you. Taylor Robert S. Thibault Jr. Kathleen Ann Van Tassell John Worholok Elizabeth A. Wrotniewski i Ptv , The Editor Strikes Back Editor ' s comments are among the hardest pages to write. It ' s the point in the book where you have to apologize for everything else that appears if you ' re not incredibly proud of it, or it ' s the moment where you ' ve got to become the epitome of humility if you are. In this case, I ' ve got mixed feelings about the entire enterprise. For much of the year, no, the entire year, a good part of the staff ' s efforts were directed to getting the 1982 La Campana to print. As such, the 1983 edition of the book suffered. It is not the book it could have been, should have been, or the book I would have liked to have seen it be. At the same time, it has much with which It redeems itself. It has behind it the best core of talent in the way of photographers, layout people, editors, and organizational staff that has been seen in many years. It had enough in the way of pictures so that even after giving up a few for its predecessor, the staff could remain fussy about what went in and what didn ' t. This is not to say we were wholly successful, obviously; it is my hope, and the rest of the staff ' s, that our efforts meet the approval of the campus community. As is the custom, there are many people I would like to take the time to thank personally for their special efforts in guiding this book from start to finish. I would, however, beg the indulgence of those who know they have my appreciation, and limit my special mentions to two people. The first. La Campona ' s Executive Secretary, Stephanie Smith, came to us at a time when the office was still in a disarray caused by its move from Life Hall to the Student Center Annex, its transition from one staff to a totally new one, and its efforts to complete one yearbook while working on another. While others stood by asking how things were going, she came in and asked how she could help. Through the course of this, she fended off questions from impatient seniors, handled two seasons of portrait sittings, organized the office out of the chaos that existed, and surprisingly never lost her sense of humor. Whenever a task was given to her, an editor could leave assured that it would be done quickly and correctly, and consequently she earned a trust that few if any had known before, and none have seen since. The second is the man to whom this edition of La Campana is dedicated, Edward Maddocks. I first met him a year before I would register at Montclair State, at a time when we shared the same place of employment. Consequently, his was one of the few faces I recognized after 1 enrolled. Our paths crossed a few times and we seemed to share histories of sporadic registration, but I never did get to know him as well as I wanted to. Circumstances just never fell that way. I last saw him when after a leave of absence he was going to register again, just before Labor Day. I gave him and his girlfriend the quick tour of the Annex, showed him some not so good pictures 1 had taken of him at a friend ' s wedding, and said I ' d have to do better of him for the yearbook during the coming year. Again, circumstances just didn ' t fall that way. It was decided at that time to dedicate the book to him. Sometimes, when the hassles of running the yearbook got to be too much, the desire to see that dedication through kept me going. So, to Ed, to Stephanie, to the class of 1983, here it is. I hope you like it. 0 Richard J.C. Hango Editor-in-Chief, still The Crew Editor-ln-Chief Richard J.C.
