Text from Pages 1 - 416 of the 1979 volume:

La Cam pan a 1979 Volume LX Ithuriel comes from Paradise Losthy John Milton. This character, deputed by Gabriel, searches with Zephon through The Garden of Eden for Satan. He finds Satan, squat like a toad, close at the ear of Eve. One touch of his spear turns this falsehood of force to its own likeness and they escort the Prince of Hell back to Gabriel. ■ii CWD w;m w A Si Si Ml Ml ib iS iSi a mbum on an rhi- jraar n Bsci C l HBP raw ' ■M.J B3P ' ' a 6 „ li ■ ■•  Fall is that back to school time, seeing all the friends you have not seen o ver the summer and catching the last weekends down at the shore. It ' s the first Thursday back at the Rat and cutting your first class. As the air turns colder and the leaves begin to change students will hang around the back of College Hall to eat lunch and enjoy the scenery or else take a day off for a ride in the country. The frisbee players get their last games in and disappear inside with everyone else when the last leaves come off the branches. It ■ ' llllL j)WII ' 12 EISIIIE I Parking, 1979 As usual, where to park was on everybody ' s mind. When the year opened it looked like a new page had been turned in the history of parking. A new Direc- tor of Security, Jayne Rich, had been hired to sort out the miasma of problems surrounding the issue. Many memos and much talk emerged out of the Ad- ministrative offices. Students actually hoped an end to the problem was in sight. The year got undenvay and tow trucks began to be seen more frequently on campus. Students who grossly violated parking rules returned at the end of the day to find their cars gone. Clove Road residents found joy in being able to get an illegally parked car yanked out of their precious reserved space. Students who may have been wishing for an end to Quarry parking were in for a rude surprise— there was no end to the ten-minute walk up from the pits. Angered, students circulated petitions to impeach Dr. Minninberg, the Vice President of Administration and Finance and the man they thought responsi- ble for the mess. Parking, con ' t. The President of the S.GA, Charles Sahner, sent out an angry letter con- demning not only Dr. Minninberg but the Montclarion as well. For a while it seemed something could happen. But the whole storm blew over in a few weeks and life returned to normal. People continued to walk and cars con- tinued to be towed. To: From: SPECIAL PETITION NEWSLETTER It ' s time that I, Charles Sahner, President of the Student Government Association, Incorporated, speak my own mind on the issue of the petitions to fire Elliot I. Rich, Director Security and Safety Re : PARKING AOT) TRAFFIC ELNFORC£MK T As .he newly-appointed Director of Securirv and Safety I wish not only to extend a personal greeting to each of you but also !SJ vv your cooperation in the efforts of our deoartment to abate the parking and traffic problems on our campus. My twenty- five years of law enforcement experience, which include admini- strative expertise with both municipal and campus police have convinced me that only through the mutual efforts of oolice and those whom they serve can problems such as our historic traffic and parking dilemmas be resolved. !° . !y?.?!??_ Y ' ? J ® ' , 5°Py °f current traffic and parking Much is heard from the Student Government Association about the parking situation. To get the other side of the story, La Campana asked Dr. Minnin- berg, the supposed arch-enemy of students in the SGA ' s eyes, to write an arti- cle on how he felt the situation stood. Accompanying the article are some photographs he took. The pictures you see represent serious parking problems at Montclair State College. The sample you see is a small one, but I think it has a message. Although we are not swimming in extra spaces, the largest concern that we face each day is the degree of disregard and discourteousness displayed on the part of the few who make the lives of the many uncomfortable at best. The College will continue to do all that it can to improve and increase parking areas to service the campus. At the same time it is incumbent upon all users of the campus facility to honor the rules, respect their colleagues and peers, and share equally in both the joys and the trials of being a part of the Montclair State College Community. Dr. Elliot. Minninberg Vice President of Administration and Finance. !,.. - -A.-- . ■ ■■ - r. -W.. THE WHIPPING POST by Matt Wilson Two months ago SGA President Charles Sahner tore a copy of the MONTCLARION in half. We ' re going to hang you; no, you are going to hang yourselves, he shrieked. Last night Sahner hanged the MONTCLARION. Sahner, with the complicity of Treasurer Keith Ansbacher, froze the paper ' s funds. The MONTCLARION was shut down. It was a moment that Sahner has waited a long time for. In the Spring of 1979 Sahner failed to win the paper ' s endorsement. He vowed he would never forget that. And he hasn ' t. What Sahner did was wait for the first politically viable moment for revenge. In early Nov., Sahner thought he had it. An audit of the MONTCLARION conducted during August and September of this year revealed that $13,000 of the paper ' s revenues were unac- counted for. This shortfall was incurred over the years 1976-78. Sahner made the audit public Wednesday night. The Legislature responded with a de- mand for a fraud audit. But the SGA Executive Board, led by Sahner, was not satisfied. Sahner asked for a freeze of funds— a silencing of the newspaper. When the Legislature balked at this, Sahner pointed to his Executive privilege and rammed it down their throats. What this demonstrates most cleariy is Sahner ' s contempt for freedom of the press and the student ' s rights he campaigned for. Sahner, who has made student ' s rights a cliche, ignored their voice clearly expressed through the Legislators. Charles Sahner may well have hanged the MONTCLARION last night. But he did so at the student ' s expense. His action demonstrates that, in his mind, he is the best judge of what information students should and should not have. And with that decision he has hanged himself. That even- ing myself and a couple of birds got pissed and early the next morning me mate knocked me up. It has been said that England the the United States are two coun- tries divided by a common language. An American unacquainted with English slang would visualize some rather lewd images upon reading the above paragraph. In actuality, the scenes depicted were quite innocent. In England, grotty is an adjective meaning dis- gusting or undesirable, while a fag is not a homosexual but a cigarette. A bird is an attractive female but when I got pissed with them I was not angry but intoxicated! Queuing for the lew is what one becomes accustomed to in a large family with only one bathroom, and knocked up , hardly naughty, means to be awakened. On my way to England, the TWA Boeing 747 glided swiftly and quietly over the seemingly bottomless dark Atlantic. I remember fan- tasizing about what life in London would be like. I recalled images of F.H. Burnet ' s The Little Princess , creamy skinned little girls in starched white cotton shirts and dark skirts, their faces adorned with wide brimmed hats and ribbons. I dreamt of teas, of finger sandwiches and crumpets, and feigned an air of utter dignity. I revered my visions of cobblestone winding streets, polite shopkeepers and the brilliant white buildings of Grovenor ' s Square. I expected to acquire a respect for inclement and dismal weather. Upon arrival, I found that of all my fantasies, only one had manifested itself in reality, Grovenor Square. It was brilliant and white, and very, very beautiful. I never had finger sandunches, though tea was enjoyed at every opportune moment. The shopkeepers, when questioned for merchandise or directions, were not, to my experience, terribly friendly and welcoming to Americans. Oh well, one can ' t have everything. The English women did have lovely complexions, and so did the lads for that matter, but the starched uniforms were absent. In their place I awed at ripped and unmatched trousers, dog collars and safety pins; the striking garb of England ' s fashion-rock revolution— PUNK! I took the underground to Picadilly Circus my first week in England, but the greatest spec- tacle was not on stage. I watched the punks lingering under the neons of the theater district in full gear. The hair was often cropped very short, for both girls and guys dyed to a stunning red, or even better, multi-colored! I did not know whether to be appalled or en- tranced but I settled for distant bewilderment. To the layman, the New Wave Punk movement may have ap- peared superficial and faddish. But on closer examination of the social and political movements stirring Great Britain, we see Punk arising as a symbol of the turmoil and disharmony characterizing change. I had gone to England knowing little more of its political history than what my mother had repeated of the successive monarchies. I wanted to learn about England and to dispell the un- favorable American reputation as I perceived it. I decidedly admired the activist, (as opposed to pacifist) attitude of the student popula- tion I knew in England. There was a powerful aura of enthusiasm about them. Yet there was also an impermeable bitterness and helplessness associated with this striving for change. There appears to be something of a burden on the English consciousness that af- fects all forms of the lifestyle. The left and the right are in constant battle to create a climate of national contentment, yet that ideal seems beyond the grasp of a country that is beautiful if somewhat malnourished in national resources. Despite all unrest, England will always be an admired nation, especially to its offspring America. It is populated, in my opinion, with a people who possess a kind of vigor and pride the likes of which many young Americans will never understand. America, as a habitat, is a different world. Young Americans worry about such things as the rising cost of education. In England, higher ed financing is largely funded through the government for qualified individuals. I was amazed that when I fell ill with a cold in- fection at one point, I was treated and tested by medical personnel entirely free of charge. Socialized medicine had benefitted me even as a visitor! Young Americans do not seem to be particularly con- cerned with clothing prices. English students save prudently for the luxury of a pair of blue jeans! An English friend of mine once ex- pressed his opinion to me that America reminded him of a playground, where all that one wanted was easily acquired. While I could not share in such feelings, 1 could see the relative appearance of the U.S. as a nation of wealth and carefree living. As America approached its second major energy crisis it is interesting to just mention that petrol was selling for 90 pence ($1.80) per gallon in England when I left there a year ago. That is just an exam- ple! In any case, I realize that when my English friend compared the U.S. to a playground, he was not necessarily handing out compli- ments. 1 felt that in a way, a bit of the ugly American attitude was emerging; that feeling that we in the U.S. are a little spoiled, super- ficial, that we are not salt of the earth folk. Oddly I found myself wondering, On what is my identity as an American based? We are the great melting pot, no doubt; a prism of colors, histories, and cultures. The synthesis that we are is our strength. Travelling to a foreign nation was trying, thrilling, and wonderous. It helped me to learn that people are just human when it comes right down to it. We all have fears as well as desires. No one has the solution to the riddle of life. To leave the environment one has always known, and to explore openly and enthusiastically a new one is not a privilege but a right, as education is our most important right. It need only be taken advantage of. Your opportunity awaits you in the Exchange Program Office in Chapin Hall. —by Dana Trudeau, thanks to Laura Carrier and E.E.P. Won: 8 Lost: 2 79 M.S.C. The Tribe had always been in the running for the title but were usually prevented by Glassboro State or Trenton State. The Indians were blessed with a few individuals who had out- standing seasons. Wide receiver Oriando Alvarez broke the recep- tion record that was set by Bob Haddad. Alvarez, finished the year with 35 catches for 593 yards. His four year career was 75 recep- tions for 1399 yards. Kicker Keith Sahlin broke the scoring record with 57 points. Sahlin won the NJSCAC title for the Indians with a 27 yard field goal in the final game with Trenton State. Linebacker Sam Mills and offensive tackle Tom Morton each had a good year. Mills led the team in tackles with 142, while Morton was instrumental in opening the holes for runners Bill Grundy, Mike Horn, Paul Potanka, and Pete Waggoner. The Indians are looking forward to a good 1980 season since many of their players are returning. VARSITY SOCCER The soccer team enjoyed a successful year. Their record of 10-3- 2 can attest to their good work. The 3 losses for MSC were by one goal, so one can see that they were extremely competitive. Nasr El-Din Mussa was one of the big stars for the Indians, scor- ing 17 goals, the second highest in MSC history. He also handed out 8 assists. Keith Ruggieri had 5 goals and 6 assists while playing a rugged brand of defense. MEN ' S CROSS COUNTRY The Mens Cross Country team was a solid team, finishing the season with an incredible 14-4 record. Talented runners like Rich Wallace, (a consistent performer for MSC), Dan Dougherty and Cliff Hampson made it easy for the In- dians. Each of the three runners continually finished near the top this year. WOMEN ' S TENNIS Womens Tennis also had a quite successful year. They finished 7-3 this year, and were in all but two of their matches. Robin Brateman was the first singles player for MSC and faced tough competition. Brateman was able to finish the year at 5-5. Sue Brown played second singles for MSC and ended with a good record of 74. Brown played strongly all year. FIELD HOCKEY In field hockey MSC played a wide variety of talented teams but still managed to come out with a winning record of 7-5-2. One of the best players for the team this year was forward Judy Popadanic who scored 11 goals. Goalie Evelin Jackson was quite a surprise for the Squaws this year. She was very consistent, took a lot of chances, but managed to come up big when the Squaws needed her most. WOMEN ' S CROSS COUNTRY The Womens Cross Country Team had tew meets but were suc- cessful as their 3T record shows. The Squaws were able to attain a high winning percentage because of runners like Debbie Blades, who was one of MSC ' s top performers. The Fall Baseball team added another winning year to their record. They finished with an 1T6 record. This indicates how com- petitive MSC will be in the spring. In Fall Baseball the coach usually looks for what new talent came up from the sub-varsity. One such player was Mark Bujnowski, now a starter on the varsity level. Also on the varsity and showing good promise were Tony Gaeta and Gene MacDonald. Parties at M.S.C, % ■ fl ■•=E? -1.. The snow is beautiful until you have to compete with it for parking spaces. To the dorm students it is a chance for traying and having another excuse to get wasted on drugs. But to wake up in the morning to a foot or two freshly fallen snow is still one of the more beautiful sights to treasure during that cold time. Women ' s Basketball MSC won ' t be a competitive team without Carol Blazejowski! That cry was heard by many of the Squaws and their fans. Nonetheless the Squaws retained their competitive edge. They won 19 games while only losing six. There were numerous close scores. They lost to Penn State University by two and to Rutgers by six. There was only one double digit loss, and that was to Old Domi- nion. Squaw senior and forward Pat Colasurdo had a terrific year in her own right. She averaged 23 points, 11.5 rebounds and 21 assists. She was named on the Ail-American Team and the All-East and All-Star Teams. MSC was happy to see guard Jill Jeffrey showing that dribbling was not her only talent. Jeffrey averaged 12.6 points per game while giving out 106 assists total. Alice Schmidt, the other guard, led the team in assists with 208. The team always counted on her for excellent ball handling as well as her defensive prowess, and she came through on many occa- sions for the Squaws. When you speak of wrestling the first name that comes to mind is Ken Mallory. At 134 pounds there were none better in the country. Mallory finished the season at 30-2, and ended with a four year career record of 105-7. He was the only Division III wrestler to win a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) National Cham- pionship. Mallory is a 3 time winner of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Conference Championships, known to wrestlers as the MET. He went to Iowa for the defense of his National Championship but an injury forced him to an early loss. Ken Mallory was not the only successful wrestler at MSC. Mike Sickles finished the season at 29-5. He also was a winner of the METS. The team has many outstanding young wrestlers and they are looking forward to a new season. MSC was 7-3 and finished second behind Jersey City State College. A big surprise for the Indians this year was freshman Ed Riche. Riche was called upon when Ken Young, an outstanding guard, was injured. Riche was an excellent substitute, and will be counted on next year. MSC will lose two valuable players from this years squad. Guard Nick Matarazzo and center Reggie Belcher are graduating. Matarazzo was a very consistent player throughout the year and his career here at MSC. He averaged 12.3 points per game and had 102 assists for the year. Belcher also contributed much to the Indians. Respected by his teammates as well as opponents, he averaged 12.9 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. WOMEN ' S SWIMMING The women ' s swim team finished at 4-9, but it was not an indica- tion of their capabilities. The Squaws had to face many schools that gave out scholarships. Since financial help is so attractive to any athlete, the Squaws were not able to lure the best talent here. Of the team ' s best, MSC ' s solo diver Karen Van Schaak enjoyed a fantastic season as she scored 52 points, enabling her to compete in the Eastern Regionals. WOMEN ' S FENCING The fencing team became a winning team as they posted a 5-3-1 record. They were killed only once, that by Brooklyn College of New York. Some outstanding fencers were Eileen Murray who was 44-10 for the year, Gladys Berardi, Su Peck and Sandi Heinze. WOMEN ' S GYMNASTICS The squaws did not have a winning season but remained quite competitive. Their losses came in close matches to teams that gave out scholarships. MSC had many talented gymnasts, including Cheryl Trubin, who averaged 11.14 in the Vaulting and Floor Exercises. Renee Massey had an average of 24.49 on the balance beam, vaulting, uneven bars and floor exercises. MSC was involved in the New Jersey Association for Inter- collegiate Athletics for Women Championships, where they placed second behind Rutgers University. The score of 124.9 to 118.15 is a good example of just how close the Squaws came to winning it all. ■ 5 ISI ' W m mM . ' «y.Ji TSSr J . Y. From the beginning of the semester rumors flew around campus on when, how long, and the scholastic effects of a strike. Almost weekly the Montclarion carried a front page story on the Union. The only topic among students was how screwed they would get if a strike came about. The College Administration bluffed and made a lot of threatening noises. The Student legislature passed a resolution while the SGA President chickened out and made no state- ment at all. The vote was taken and the strike began. Dorm students headed home, convinced there was going to be no school for a few weeks. Only a dozen commuters showed up. But two days later the strike ended. After half a semester of shouting between teachers and administration and worry- ing by students the entire issue just fizzled out. mn REQUESTS mmr GOVERNOR S OGET MESSAGE y v %% ' o % -. T6i! . But Mr. Sahner refused to let it become operative due to poor installation and control rights arguements with the College Administration. The most use the television sets had, before officials took off the tuning knobs, was by students who watched afternoon television. ♦■. ' SP a ■ , |S - • ' w Spring Athletics Spring Sports revolves around two teams at MSC: the Men ' s Lacrosse Team and the Women ' s Softball Team. The Lacrosse Team enjoyed an excellent 10-4 season and a 8-1 conference record. The record was just the beginning for the stickmen. They put themselves in the record books as a team and individually. The Indians won a game against CCNY 35-0, which was the widest margin of victory in MSC history. George Nucera scored 10 goals in that game. That number of goals was not only an MSC record, but a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) record as well. As a team the squad set the record of points scored in a season with 319. The other outstanding team for MSC was the Women ' s Softball Team. The Squaws finished the season at 15-9 and played many teams not in the State College conference. The Squaws were led by their outstanding pitcher Dawn Lacey, whose value can be attested by her 8-5 record with an ERA of 1.55. The Baseball Team had a winning record of 17-15, but finished first in the conference with an 8-2 record, letting them qualify for the New Jersey State College Athletic Conference Playoffs. Senior shortstop Ed Zangari, a consistent performer throughout his career here, broke the base hit record at MSC. Zangari had 156 career hits, which broke the record of 149 hits by Frank Petite. The Men ' s Track and Field Team had a disappointing season at 3-7-1, but could be assured of at least one runner, Rich Wallace, finishing near the top everytime. He finished first six times. A sure sign of spring at MSC is the SGA elections. The candidates ' posters bloom all around campus, each claiming how he she will strive to make the SGA more responsive to the student needs, work more efficiently, and save money. For most students, it is just another distraction in a long line of distractions. For the can- didates it is a lesson in how little sleep one actually needs. In the end, a new ex- ecutive board is elected, the SGA retires to the fourth floor, the students go on studying, and the maintenance department gets to pick up littered campaign leaflets and scrape bumperstickers off every surface on campus. The M.S.C. field was not used because they were installing astro-turf. Ap- proximately 6,000 people attended the ceremonies in the Stadium, which has a capacity of 75,000. Dr. David W. Dickson, the President of the College, gave honorary degrees to Licia Albanese, Angelo Robert Cali, and Leonard Solomon Silk. Mr. Silk then gave a speech to the senior class. Frank Cosolito, Vice President of the Student Government Association Inc., then delivered a short speech to the class. The general consensus was that it was an incredible experience holding exercises in such a big place. ■ This is a picture of Chuck. It is eleven at night and I ' ve been working like a dog for the past week trying to finish everything up. It has been a good year and a few people deserve thanks for helping make it that way. John, Ron, Dale, and Klaus get specials because they kicked me when I really needed it. Bob and Red were excellent photographers. Together they took seven eighths of the images in the book and made it what it was. Everyone else who did things when they needed to be done and helped me when I needed stuff deserve thanks but are too numerous to name. So until next year, peace.
