Row 2: Gondola J Cohen, P., Nucera, G. senior class officers president George Nucera vice president Joseph Gondola treasurer Barbara Byrne secretary Mary Ann Janson s.g.o. representative Joan Englis Page 7wenty-three senior class history V 1951 — the beginning of a new life — college life, remember the dinks, hazing end the fresh- man-sophomore peace dance and staring up at the ominous ' 55, thinking you would never make it? some did not, but many more did and lived through many new experiences, not only for them- selves but for the college as a whole, didn ' t we feel good when al jazzbo collins mentioned our purple grotto dance over webs and took time to come here to make it a huge success? 1952 — we were sophomores at last; signing plaques, ordering frosh to count bricks and feel- ing pretty good about the whole thing, we had the roaring twenties party in the rec. building, the first loser ' s party at the orchard rest, and many of us went to another mstc first, the girls ' inter- dormitory show. 1953 — the frosh were coming in; which one, among these young and eager people, was our little brother or little sister ? our class did it again; for the first time a girl was elected student government association president, the annua! car- nival and the formal dinner-dance at the robert treat hotel made second semester a memorable one. 1954 — seniors! ! the time had fiown, we made it. nothing stood between us and graduation; ex- cept statistics, philosophy, and practice teaching, we weathered these experiences and culminated our college careers in a whirl of informal and for- mal social events: the boat ride up the hudson to the picnic at bear mountain; the president ' s recep- tion in russ hall; the senior banquet at the robin hood inn; the wonderful, wonderful night of din- ing and dancing at the waldorf-astoria hotel; the solemn, sunset baccalaureate service in the am- phitheatre, realizing that this was almost the last time we would be together as the class of ' 55; and, the day of days, tears, joy and promises of letterwriting and keep in touch filled the air as we sat, for the last time experiencing something we all had worked for, the completion of an im- portant phase of our lives — graduation day, June 9, 1955. ' 5 :t% football the 1954 season marked the return of coach aldon c. coder to the football wars, faced with the loss of many veterans and a host of unfamiliar faces, coach coder finally came up with a freshmen-studded starting eleven, his expectations were not fulfilled, however, as the In- dians chalked up on unenviable record of one win and six losses. the first half of the first game against national agri- cultural college, at doylestown, pa., revealed eleven men in red uniforms who worked little, if at all, together, as the teams left the field at halftime, the aggies held a comfortable 19-0 lead, from the second half kick-off it was a different story, however, the big red looked and acted like a well-oiled machine, they drove and slashed their way to three touchdowns to bring the score to 19-18. the last extra point was the story and the game ended with the score, aggies 19, mstc 18. the montclair faithful were not too dismayed at the final score, for they had seen a team that looked like a comer, one that could hand out its shore of beatings. the next game saw cheyney state teachers college, another Pennsylvania school, invade the montclair baili- wick for a contest under the arcs, displaying much of the form of the previous week, the indians jumped off to a quick lead and were never headed, burying the visitors 32-7. new britain slogged their way, over a damp field, to a 33-0 victory over the visiting jerseyites. nothing seemed to go right for the red and white, as they could not get their ofFense rolling nor could they stop the Connecticut teachers ' hard-charging backs. with shippensburg it was a different story, the Penn- sylvania powerhouse was just too much for the home- towners. after holding them fairly even for the first quar- ter things began to open up in the second chukker as shippenburg ' s greater weight on the line and strong bench began to make themselves felt, the final score 46-7, to make the record 1-3. it was the same story with upsala. jumping off to a quick lead mstc looked as though they might pull a r u startling upset, however, the famed 4-4 backfield soon pulled themselves out of their trance and began to romp, final score: upsala 52, montclair 19. in the last two games against trenton and kutztown, the latter being played in Pennsylvania, the indians seemed to be a listless outfit, trenton ' s smaller aggrega- tion outcharged the montclair forward wall and pulled what might be termed a 1 3-6 upset, the last game against kutztown was almost a carbon copy, this was another squeaker, ending up with the pennsylvanians on top 20-13. even with the not too good won-lost slate there were a few bright spots on the club, one was senior, co-captain ron armengol. nothing could ever be said against ron ' s brand of heads-up, aggressive ball, then too, there was the passing and running of the other co-captain, frank costa. howie white was another swivel-hipped back, yes, and there were a few others, meanwhile, the fans are sitting back waiting to see what next year will bring, the way it looks, things will be better. M Page TJinety-nine basketball the big question in everyone ' s mind tiiis year was whether or not the team could approach the record shat- tering accomplishments of last year ' s 96.4 points per game team, also this year saw the return of coach hank Schmidt to the job as mentor of our hopeful hoopsters. of the starting five only two men returned, connie perry and bob nesnay. however, both men were ineligible to play any conference games, thus the height was thrown on the shoulders of the more inexperienced players, it was coach Schmidt ' s job to make these boys a smooth- working unit, everyone wondered whether he could do it in such a short time and the school looked to the first few games for the answer. early practices and constant plugging at mistakes brought the team up to the point of readiness, with the season looming ahead. first came the alumni contest, and although the team appeared slacking, everyone knew that they had what it takes, also the team maintained the fast-breaking pace of last year but mixed it up with the more slower preci- sion ball, this formula seemed to click as the team won 87-78. this game also gave rise to three second-stringers of last year who were moved up to fill the shoes of yester- day ' s greats, these three were juniors skippy rose, bill rose and soph, clem tennaro. it was good to see the improvement of these boys as they put on a polished performance and gave to the team the shot in the arm it needed. jersey city supplied little opposition in the next con- test as the Indians showed both the ability and the power to rack up high scores as they romped 92-57. pacing the team was connie perry and bob nesnay with 24 and 19 points respectively. our next victory was paterson state; again perry led the team with 27 points, final score 95-90. following pater- son, trenton state invaded the premises and we eclipsed the century mark for the first time this season, 115-83. this game also saw skippy rose join the ' 20 ' club with 21 points. the first loss of the season came before the hands of a desperate nee squad, this 92-85 swamp was later avenged by an impressive 83-79 victory for the big red. jersey city also fell prey to our scalping Indians for the second time, the score 98-73. as the yearbook goes to press the team record is 5-1 and we can predict an- other victorious season. Coach : Henry E. Schmidt track tasting defeat at the hands of but two collegiate oppo- nents, the cindermen completed another good season, one of their victories was over a group of schools which enabled them to retain the niiac diadem for the seventh year running. the main strength of the team was in the distance events, the mile and two mile, here cross-country runners made good use of their distance power and made mstc ' s milers and two milers among the best in new jersey col- legiate ranks, top distance man was ed rams, whose times hovered about 4:30. always close on his heels were dave shotwell and gordon Wallace, seniors bob green, john penberthy, and jim mcmillan were also standouts in the distances, they generally proved their mettle in the two mile run. last year ' s graduation hurt the team immeasurably in the half mile event, there are some promising newcomers, however, whom coach richard willing is grooming for this task. fred hazekamp, co-captain, returns to the wars this season, this amazing fellow will bolster the team to a very great extent, coach willing plans to use hazekamp in the dashes, when necessary, and as a quarter miler, when his points in the dashes will not mean victory or defeat for the red and white, fred also doubles in the broad jump and is the squad ' s top leaper. don scofield and roland flynn, ex-marine, were the squads quartermilers last season, with their encouraging performances of ' the past they are expected to better their times and round out into an undefeatable duo. in the dashes, returning veterans howie white, dick stone, and bill fantry are expected to better their last year ' s times, in the hurdles the squad is strong with men return- ing such as white, don murray, lou erber, and frank costa. also freshman charlie richter is expected to pro- duce good results. the field events also seem strong this year, co-captain ron armengol is ready for his final push in the weight events and is a pivotal man in the shot-put and discus throw, aiding him in throwing the discus will be irwin suesserman who also lays claim to being the only hammer throw specialist on campus. costa and erber will team up in the javelin hurling event, last season costa set a modern school record with a heave of 1 69 feet. in the pole vault, gerry ryan and jerry ranieri are ex- pected to follow last year ' s performance which was par excellence. both fellows hit up around the eleven foot mark consistently, in the high jump, ranieri is again expected to equal his previous year ' s mark, jerry usually soars to approximately six feet, aiding him will be sco- field and murray, which gives a solid one, two, three punch. things look bright for a great season, possibly better than last year. Page One Tlundred Jn baseball from the first broken bat in the spring practice until the lost out in the final gome, the 1954 season was the Scene of another mstc sport success. under the steady hand of coach bill dioguardi, the team worked early, hard, and long to condition themselves for the long campaign ahead, in march the Indians invaded the southland for their annual spring dash, the warm weather seemed to agree with the boys as they came home boasting a fine 3-1 record. however, their glory was short lived, as injuries plagued them time and again, and they dropped a few squeakers giving the squad a 5-5 record. bright spots in the seasonal slump was the great pitch- ing of mstc ' s finest hurlers, bill rose and jim murray. however, the batmen were lagging behind the pitchers with frank cassavell, harold Jennings and dick lukasik, bearing the brunt of the load. then the Indian batmen finally hit their stride, lashing out four victories against one setback and averaging better than 10 hits and 5 runs in each, highlights in the surge of victories was a 20 hit, 1 1 run avenging victory over bloomfield and an impressive 9-0 shutout at st. peters of jersey city. coming down the homestretch the locals really poured on a blazing finish to make the final record 14-8. the batting honors went to sophomore harold Jennings who pelted the horsehide for a .41 9 average. these final games also gave rise to another fine mont- clair hurler, ingie greenberg. frank cassavell also made headlines as he led the team to a 11-0 victory over bayonne naval with four hits in five trips to the plate and four stolen bases, including two thefts of home! the final game saw montclair end trenton state ' s win- ning skein on 9 as they emerged on the top side of a 6-3 score. with all the lettermen returning, the team and school can both look forward to another victorious season and perhaps the return of the njiac crown. In six intercol- legiate dual meets, however, the harriers failed to keep possession of the le moyne invitational and collegiate track conference crowns. the record, as it stands, is good when one considers the number of pulled muscles and numerous other in- juries, probably the loss which hurt the most was to ed rams, rams, along with dave shotwell and gordon Wal- lace, had been an important cog in the machine, with his loss, at approximately mid-season, the thin-dads lost a consistent runner, one who was almost always sure to place in the top three. the burden then fell on the shoulders of shotwell and Wallace, their top-notch performances and the surprising and quite welcome efforts of noah marshall pulled the Indians through most of the schedule, another runner made his mark this season too, and bears watching in the years to come, this is reuben Johnson. surely, graduation will hit the team hard this year. three capable performers have run their last contests, John penberthy, jim mcmillan, and bob satch green, penber thy, too, was a victim of that old bugaboo, pulled muscle, this season, and his not being up to par also hurt the team, often the loss of just one place can be the margin between victory and defeat, such was the case in the etc championships when the red and white were nosed out by just three points. what with the performers returning next year it seems safe to say that montclair ' s cross-country squad will equal or better this year ' s slate. not many years ago there was a class b organization on campus called simply, fencing club. enthusiastic, but coachless, the group treasured its small hoard of equipment, they replaced broken blades with some of the dues collected from its members, new members were worked just a little beyond endurance, and those with the thought of movie duelling glamour and no work s oon left the club. those few who remained were imbued with tradition, stories were told such as the one about the meet between mstc and a nearby college, a women ' s team normally consists of three girls, montclair had only two girls quali- fied for outside competition, both girls had only one jacket between them, with such little fencing equipment, but so much spirit, the girls won the meet! early in 1951, allan griffin came to mstc and fencing club received a class a charter, the woman ' s team joined the intercollegiate women ' s fencing association. gradually the team was recognized as a potentially championship winner rather than merely scrimmage oppo- sition, at the beginning of the 1951-52 season, montclair girls took first and second place in the new jersey prep competition, during the following season jeanie raw- cliffe won the new jersey prep, losing but one bout dur- ing the evening, medals were won in the new york and new jersey novice competitions, and the iwfa individual championship was also won. this was the first time a girl representing a new jersey college received the title. last season, mstc fielded a very strong team, in novem- ber, they won the new york novice team competition, they lost their first dual meet of the season, but came back to victory for eight remaining meets, the intercollegiates were held at elmira college in new york. montclair ' s team was highly favored to win, but a poor start by usually reliable team members gave an edge to other teams which could not be overcome. this year, the group worked hard to break last year ' s record and succeeded. do you think we can get the station wagon? . . . aching muscles . . . that ' s a lunge? . . . novice team winners . . . how many medals do we have now? . . . port authority information desk — meeting place for new york meets . . . where shall we practice during the holi- days? . . . salle ' d ' . . . after one year of fencing — a champion chair-mover! . . . you had everything but the touch! . . . dramatic la belle bouts . . . you parried, what happened to the riposte? . . . this is the year and the team. golf mr. de rosa ' s golfers were once again one of the bright spots in montclair ' s sports picture this year. pros taddeo, elliot, halloran and biglin were baci again with experience tucked away In their golf bags, and proved much stronger than last year, displaying a great deal of power and clutch golfing, these boys were a team to be reckoned with and had a successful season. newcomers, del vent and deland bolstead — the veterans, and with comers like them, the golf team looks ahead to a scene of sun- shine. fore . . . anybody got a score- card? . . . use an old ball on this water-hole . . . i ' ll never look at another golf club! . . . who has an extra ball? . . . sorry mr. d, i hurt my back . . . ah, straight down the middle. bowling montclair ' s bowling team has been on the rise for the last few years. ' 54- ' 55 followed the team ' s pattern of winning ways, the squad proved its ability to knock-down those persistent and elusive pieces of wood very early in their first practices and matches. new men, halloran, senkowsky, Stevenson and rica, aided the team greatly and will help fill the gaps left by seniors sorokopud and na- talicchio. these keglers have provided a spark and a winning team con- sistently since its inception to mstc ' s sport program. that ' mythical ' 300 game . . . the pin boy is against me . . . the ' chief is always there to help . . . who bowls like an old man? . . . you gotta hit that head pin! . . . those Wednesday practices at 4 towers . . . those gutter balls really hurt. Results Promising The College ' s preliminary study, the report points out, suggests that television may be an exceedingly useful tool in ex- tending the influence of the really exceptional teacher. The results are promising enough to encourage further experimenta- tion along these lines. In tracing the evolution of classroom television, the report states: The Fund has received a large number of proposals for trying out television, particularly the closed circuit system, as an- other means of extending the effectiveness of good teachers.
