M ' AGRl PPA«L F ♦COSTER ■ ' ' - . Acknovyledgments It is not possible for us to tiiank personally all of those people who have cooperated with tlie yearbook staff to produce the 1954 La Campana, and so we would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to all of those students and faculty members, as well as the members of the administration, who have put forth their time and effort in order to help make the yearbook a success. We would like especially to thank Mr. Nicholas Ickes of Colyer-Roux Printing Company for his helpful suggestions and his cooperation, and Harry Ronnie, also of Colyer-Roux, for all the assistance he has given us in preparing the layout. To Chidnoff Studios and their representatives, Irving Lloyd and Jack Mitchell, we extend a sincere Thanks! Bob Finver has worked long and hard helping to provide us with the pictures neces- sary for your yearbook. Too, we are indebted to Bruce Monroe for his fine sports action pictures. Without the help of these people, and many others like them, we could not have presented this yearbook. Thank you, everyone. XXVII BASEBALL First in the NJIAC for the third consecutive year, Montclair ' s baseball team finished the 1953 season with a record of fourteen wins and nine losses. High- lighting the season was an eight game winning streak that included Jim Murray s hail of fame bid as the red and white shut out NCE in the first game of a double- header. Billy Rose clinched the second of the pair with a neat three-hit per- formance. I N I The game of the year was the 1-0 shutout of Scton Hall. Harry Uurkee pitched a scoreless tic right down to the wire. It was the last half of the ninth; bases loaded, strike two, then Ken Miscia smacked a solid single to right to drive in the winning run. i i i j Besides the stars of the mound staff, it was good club holding and the hard hitting of Goldwatcr, Gray, and Cassavell that combined to make Montclair the conference champs once more. VILL1. M DIOGL ' .- Rni f ' jE y 4 XX I Row 1: Shotwell, Penberthy, McMillan, Gray, Goldby. Row 2: Wallace, O ' Donnell, Barr, Rams. CROSS-COUNTRY Completing a record-shattering season, Montclair ' s cross-country team, under the able tutelage of coach Richard Willing, emerged the powerhouse in eastern small college competition. An outstandmg event was the winning of the Collegiate Track Conference championship, followed the next day with the annexation of the AAU Senior title. Added to these triumphs were victories in the Le Moyne Invitation, the fourth in five years, the AAU Junior title, and the Montclair Invitation meet. Individual honors went to Dave Shotwell, Ed Rams, and Gordon Wal- lace as they paced the harriers ' attack. Shotwell took the AAU Junior crown and Rams turned in a 26:52 on the tough Van Cortland Park course. It was team effort that brought triumph and made this the most successful of seasons. TRACK TEAM The undefeated 1953 season was one of the greatest — the Big Red cin- dermen won six and tied one. This was the first undefeated season since 1938. However, coach Willing ' s boys also took the NJI.AC championship again, a title that has been with Montclair for six consecutive years. Three marks to be proud of were chalked up by flash Fred Hazekamp. Larry Valley set a pole vault record and Dick Gaynor, in his final outing, took the two mile jog for the fourth year in a row. Hugh Watson and Hugh Sweeney starred in the hurdles and 880 while Fred Keil excelled in the field events. The frosh accounted for 30 per cent of the total points, showing great promise. BASKETBALL Always a challenger for the conference crown, the I9 3- ' 4 basketball season opened with a veteran team. Led by seniors Bill Buschke, Ziggy Kwiatkowski, Frank Baldachino, Connie Perry, and junior Bob Nesnay, the boys showed promise when they bested Seton Hall in a pre-season scrimmage. With the idea that basketball is a game of speed coach George Brown added his own brand of hustle to the squad. This offense-mindedness showed up when the Indians scalped Wilson, 11 9-95. In reviewing the season these thoughts appear: . . . Coming soon: a gvni to hold more than twenty five fans . . . The Lions of State growled with despair as the Indian war party came back with a 34 to 14 win. The red and white, under the coaching of George A. Brown while Mr. Alden Coder is on a leave of absence, ground out 260 yards rush- ing while limiting the Lions to four scattered first downs. The Trenton trip was a pip. Montclair opened the season under the lights in a fan-filled stadium that saw the National Aggies lose a bitterly contested encounter, 18 to 13. The highlight of the evenmg was Frank Costa ' s 87-yard run which was made pos- sible by great teamwork and some beautiful blocking. On the road, MSTC blanked Cheney 25 to 0, but then let New Britain romp, 38 to 12. The Big Red then split the next pair by topping Wilson, 32 to 7. They bowed to Montgomery, 25 to 18, then came the season ' s final with Trenton. MONTCLAIR STATE TEACHERS 1953 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE I f HOME ' Oct. } (Homeroming) . . Miontl Aggiti Oct 17 ' . When we were freshmen, we tried to show our appreciation by electing you our adviser. Four years have passed since then— class dances are over now, and our college days are at  n end. S.H.n you will see s.vne of us tor the last time; oh, we always say that we ' ll come back to visit, but sumeiimcs circumstances prevent us from carrying out our intentions. Her work for I.R.C. has provided many interesting programs open to all students. And she makes delicious hers d ' oeuvres (as the senior dorm girls can testify) . JOHN V. ROWLEY A money changer of the old school, John has kept close watch on the budget. As president of Senate and SGA Vice-president, he has had a chance to exercise his practical genius He beams with smiles as the morning snack bar runs efficiently. ANTHONY SCARDAVILLE If you can ' t find Tony in the Pub Office, chances are he ' s out in Lower Center putting up the latest original Scardaville . Always busy with business, he is one of the mainstays of Pi Omega Pi. But senior Vice-president was the big job, says Tony. CATHERINE T. KOPP Her fencing feats have resounded through- out the halls of MSTC. As Jackie ' s right hand man on the yearbook, she inhabits the Pub between bouts. Players, too, has received a boost from Cathy. BARBARA L. OSSENFORT Bibbs has served in just about every office from President to Secretary to Editor. Her par- ticular talent lies in behind-the-scenes organ- izing. If there ' s an adventure stirring, you can bet she ' ll know something about it. WHO ' S JAMES E. SPRY Jim ' s executive ability was first noticed when he captured the Sophomore Vice-presidency. This led directly to the highest office for the final two years. Some have attributed Jim ' s popularity p.irtially to his talent with the drums but he just smiles and says, 1 keep cool, that ' s all. KATHLEEN DOUGLAS It ' ll get done, is Kathy ' s favorite expression, whether she ' s discussing a hectic deadline on the paper or a particularly long Krauss assign- ment. This she attributes to her faith in people and an optimistic outlook on life. Her friends take good care of her. JIM LARKIN Jim joined his class late but made up for lost time by an immediate debut in the lead on the Players ' stage. His varied talents and abilities have brought him schoolwide fame. Friends believe that the name of Larkin will carry be- yond MSTC. ALICE LORRAINE BROWNE It was Twecdie who recognized and utilized the potentialities of the Liaison Committee as a coordinating body at MSTC. Her quiet charm has often made a difficult task seem easy. V J LXI - i A SPEECH LABORATORY The Speech Laboratory is dedicated to assisting those children from the neighboring towns who need help in speech. The student teachers, junior and senior speech majors and minors, are trained by the lab ' s supervisor, Ellen Kauffman to analyze the problems of the students and to give them useful speech experience through drill and practice. Students are divided into small groups; these groups include a teacher and a recorder, whose job it is to write phonetically the oral responses of the students. The Lab has proved to be a great help to many children who need corrective pracrice for their speech. lA- r z -- .■■■■ J 3?.ij cTATE Tc.P ' - ' .„n.
