TELEVISION IN EDUCATION Montclair State Teachers College was one of the first col- leges in tne country to undertake the study of the application of television in education. Our college is recognized as a pio- neer in a field that is opening up with a great rush. Since Septemher. 1950. the college has been carrying on a full-scale research project, studying the effect of television upon educational methods and the question of how this medium can hest he used in the classroom. The television committee consists of more than thirty faculty members under the direc- tion of an executive board of nine members. The committee officers are: Chairman, Lawrence H. Conrad; Secretary. Emma Fantone: and Treasurer. Horace Sheppard. The T ' Workshop carries out the actual experimentation to learn what kinds of material can be presented in education; the members of the workshop prepare scripts and make repeated trials until the appropriate materials are found. They also try out ideas suggested to them by the director and instructors in the workshop course. The cooperation and aid of the Allen B. Dumont Laboratories. Inc.. and Kliegl Bros., have contrib- uted vastly to the success of the workshop. The first ultra-high frequency educational broadcast in the world was made on April 30. 1952. from the campus at Mont- clair to thirteen schools in Montclair and Bloomneld. The re- sults of this experiment are still being evaluated throughout the coimtry. MRS. Television viewers of our class have been oBered a wide selection of programs during tneir four years at MSTC. We-nave watched not only the birth of television in education, but the beginning of a new era as well. The screen which we will remember has por- trayed the dramas which foretell a brighter tomorrow for the college. It was in our junior year that the passing of the Bond Issue brought with it plans for an extended curriculum and improved physical facilities. During our first three years, we watched the War Memorial Fun grow steadily, and finally in this, our last year, sky- rocket toward the goal we have set. We will not soon forget the 825,000 gift of Davella Mills, a boost not only to the Fund, but to our spirit. Now, as we leave. Life Hall is nearly a reality. Ground has been broken for this long- awaited Student Union Building and tangible plans have been made for our building project. All of these we have previewed on the ' 49- ' 53 video. The dreams and aspirations of a rejuvenated MSTC have become a part of our college careers. But. as always, it is not the previews of coming attractions alone that fill our memories: these are merely a part of the programs we will hold sacred. For us. the feature took place in Lower Center Hall, the crowded caf-converted snack bar. a hole-in-the-wall pub office and an overstuffed gym that had a part-time job as auditorium. The improvements for which we have worked will make us proud alumni. But we shall never forget our years— four years of script writing and program planning for the future. As MSTC prospers in its new era, it will be our class who can lot)k back and say In our small and under-staffed studio, we were the producers and directors of Montclair ' s ■Qgram of expansion. Yes. we can look back at our work and we can be proud that e had a part in it. OUR FIRST LIFER •AND THE WALLS CAME TUMBL T O G E T H E R WE B U I l D ' Us DOWN!
