It was formed for the purpose of studying various phases of visual education. It fared so well that a class for visual education was established. The club has taken up the study of the motion picture camera, stereopticon slides, picto-rolls, maps, charts, and museum material. The kodak and camera are now being studied. The old members of the club have enjoyed the subjects that were treated and it is hoped that the new members will, also. Meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month in Room 4 at 3:15. 84 THE CLASSICAL CLUB President . Helen Bossidy Vice-President Marjorie Sanders Secretary DoROTHY Dromeshauser THE CLASSICAL CLUB was organised in October, 1927, under the supervision of Miss Ethel Littlefield. The purpose of this club was to further an interest in the Classics. With mutual agreement the members decided to undertake the study of Greek Classics. The choice seemed to be a popular one for in a few months the membership had grown to thirty. At present, the club is endeavoring to find a Greek Play suitable to serve as a climax to the year ' s study of Greek. The Classical Club meets every Tuesday at 3:10 in Room 9. 87 M : m THE CONTEMPORARY CLUB President Ruth Lindsay Vice-President LORRAINE Kaucher Secretary Harriet Muller Treasurer Hazei. McConser THE CONTEMPORARY CLUB, formed last fall with the aid of Miss McKinney and Miss Stryker, is a fusion of the Literary and Up-To-Date Clubs. The club aims to help each student to develop natural tendencies in expression of their own thoughts in original writings of prose and poetry. Prizes are awarded annually for the best works of prose and poetrj ' . Current topics and problems of historical importance are also discussed. The Contemporary Club has already had many interesting and iolly meetings, one of which was given over to a lecture on Modern Poetry by Mr. Webster. Under the excellent leadership of Miss McKinley, this club meets once a week for its regular rehearsal. The membership is composed of girls carefully selected by Miss McKinley. This year the organization of a volunteer club has accorded the privileges of the regular Glee Club to girls who have late classes. Commencement music has been provided for, in the past, by the Glee Club, and this is now an established custom. In the frequent sings and special programs pre- sented, the club is assisted by Mr. Carter, its very able accompanist. Each member thoroughly enjoys the delightful and beneficial work of the club and is proud to be granted the privilege of membership. 91 i i J THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS President Katherine Lehi.bach Vice-President Catherine Firling Secretary Julia Whitelock Treasurer Muriel King Faculty Advisor Ma. Later, membership was enlarged, embracing all students and teachers who have studied two years of French. Our prime object is to make French live for us. In order to realise this aim, French is the language of the Cercle meetings. Three of the dramatically inclined members have already presented a most amusing One- Act Play, entitled Rosalie. More are to follow. Meetings are held the second and fourth Mondays of each month, at four o ' clock in the Dormitory. 93 M THE LIBRARY COUNCIL is made up of one representative from each class sec- tion, elected by that section. The faculty representative is Miss E. Winifred Crawford. The Council meets from time to time with the Librarian, Miss Zaidee Brown, to discuss ways of making the Library meet the needs of the students and to adjust any questions connected with the order or with Library Rules. Each member of the Council gives one class hour a week for service to the Library. This help is needed at the Loan Desk and is greatly appreciated by the Librarian. Members of the Council, in consideration of the service they give, are allowed free access to the stacks. 94 f ' 1) SCIENCE CLUB President Edith Knowles Vice-President HARRIET DuNN Secretary HELEN ToLLEY Treasurer Frieda Fuhrmann Editor-in-Chief Helen Ruckert Chairman of Program Committee Eleanor Noyes THE SCIENCE CLUB for the past term has certainly afforded those interested in Science and Nature Study an opportunity to gain knowledge and broaden their experiences by nature hikes, museum visits, camping trips, supper hikes and meetings. On the nature hikes, groups of girls have studied flowers, birds, sun, moon, stars and rocks and have tracked animals in the snow with Miss Woodward as their capable leader. Last October, several members spent a week-end at Camp Thendara in the Pali ' sades Interstate Park, where they met some fine people of the Green Mountain Club of which Miss Woodward is President. The Science Club feels highly indebted to Miss Woodward, its faculty advisor and friend, for its success. 99 THE STUDENT COUNCIL President . . . . . . . . . Jean Sibley ViccPresident Dorothea Palmer Secretary Mary Lyall Treasurer Francis Beam THE COUNCIL is the governing body of the school and represents the Student Government Association of which everyone in school is a member. Those who are allowed to attend the meetings are : the Executive Committee consisting of the Council Officers and all Class Vice-Presidents, two representatives from each section. Presidents of all classes (each one considered as a representative from her section) , Presidents of all organizations and Chairmen of all committees. The work of the Council is to discuss matters of vital importance to the student body and to try to adjust things for the convenience of the students. New plans, ideas and suggestions on things pertaining to school betterment are brought up at the session. The Faculty is informed of all business transacted at these meetings. The Council does many things beneficial to both Faculty and students and is a worthwhile organization. 100 SPORTS I 101 BASEBALL A T THE opening of the Baseball Season the same keen interest in athletics was dis- played by the members of our class. We soon had a Junior A team organised and playing in the same peppy fashion. We defeated the Junior B ' s by the of 16-12. In June our school had as its guests the Montclair Rotary Club who gave us a good fast game of Baseball which ended in their favor 16-8. The Normal School team was represented by members of the faculty as well as a few of the class of June, 1928. 102 4 i i i w BASKETBALL BASKETBALL, is of course, our winter indoor sport. Three seasons, two of which have found us champions, have been completed and the fourth season is well on the way to our usual victorious end. Because of the unusual merit of our players, we feel it fitting to mention the names of those who have played at least three of the four seasons. In center we had Ruth Herbert, Ann Parsek, and Catherine Mundy to start the ball rolling toward our goal. The guards in the persons of Marjorie J. Smith, Mary Kunsmueller, and Gertrude M. Taylor were strong combinations and Mary Van Derbeek, Mary Durning, Hazel Adams, and Marjorie M. Smith were the big shots. Aside from these inter-class games we were fortunate enough to arrange a game between Paterson Normal and our varsity composed of several of our number. Our victory brought a successful season to a close. This season our varsity journeyed down to the Montclair Athletic Club where we were defeated in a fast game by the score of 19 ' 14. m 103 HOCKEY THIS FALL found us lined up with Hockey sticks and after weeks of practice in dribbles, passes and other necessary techniques, we formed a Senior team The season brought forward some brilliant playing from the skilled members of our famous eleven but as we were new at the game, we did not have our usual good results. 1 ife I a I 104 SOCCER IT WAS not long after our arrival at Montclair that a goodly number of our class made their acquaintance with Miss Duke and Miss Hepburn at our first Soccer practice. This game was new to us but we all enjoyed our initiation and managed to have a very successful season winning two out of three games. 1 IM WA 105 i TRACK IN THE Spring of 1927 we held our yearly mass track meet which gave each girl an opportunity to win individual honors. Once again our class, then Junior A ' s, took the lead in winning the greatest number of points. We excelled in the High Jump, Basketball Throws, Relays, and the Dash. I I I 8 106 i i M iih i GIRLS ' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION President Frances Mol.lrc Vice-President Helen Halligan Secretary Gertrude M, Taylor Treasurer Mary Burning WHAT does the G. A. A. mean to you? Can you hear the chck of hockey sticks when the weather is crisp in the fall, and later on do you notice the steady rhythm of the basketball being passed from player to player in the gym? It is the G. A. A. which arranges all these inter-class sports and strives to build up a feeling of goodfellowship among the girls. To further encourage this attitude the council introduced something new in the form of a Play ' Day last spring. Twenty-five girls each from Paterson and Newark Normals spent the afternoon playing group games with us. Since this was the first ac- tivity of its kind in the state, we were delighted with its successful results. We hope to have another similar activity this term. Of course, Miss Duke and Miss Hepburn, our two competent advisors, are always ready to give us valuable assistance with our work at any time. Gertrude M. Taylor CHEERING SQUAD .i THE CHEERING SQUAD of the Montclair State Normal School and College of Education is a new addition this year. In the fall there was a felt need for more school spirii and enthusiasm. Pep meetings were held every Wednesday noon for two months to teach the school the songs and yells used at the basketball games during the wmter. This year ' s cheer leader, Dorothea M. Palmer, has had charge of this work and is training a group from which next year ' s leaders will be selected. This group has led cheers and songs at all the games. In the late spring, try- outs will be held and the student body will vote on the cheer leader for next year, who will carry on this work. I I I I 108 BOYS ATHLETICS OF THE three major activities in college life; namely, scholastics, social functions, and athletics, the last named seems to command more attention from the boys. This has been mostly the case with the boys in Montclair State Teacher ' s Colleare |r J| Las ' fall, after much hesitation and deliberation, a basketball team was formed, the ' ■ first in the history of the college. Due to lack of practice facilities and the lack of a regular coach, the team was very slow in rounding into proper form. Nevertheless it soon found its stride, and defeated team after team. The enviable record of eight victories and four defeats for the season sets a goal at which future teams might aim. Iff ' ' ! Plans for baseball and football teams are rapidly being made and with loyal eup- ID li port from the student body Montclair will lead other colleges not only in s cholastics but also in the realm of athletics.
