With hopes of good luck to him always, the seniors dedicate the I949 yearbook to James R. Quill, their friend and teacher. JAMES R. QUILL AS an undergraduate at Amherst, Mr. Quill played football. After receiving his B.A. degree in l9l3, he taught for one year in Massachusetts. Moving to New Jersey, for two years he taught mathematics and coached football and basketball at Cliffside Park High School. Enlisting the day after war was declared, he served for two years in the army, six months of which he spent in France as a lieutenant in the ll7th Field Artillery of the Dixie Division. After the war he returned to teaching and taught mathematics and coached football and track at Cliffside Park High School and Battin High School in Elizabeth. From l923 to I948 he was a member of the mathematics depart- ment of Montclair High. Mr. Quill became widely known for his gen- erous help in all of the athletic events here in Montclair. With his enthusiasm for sports and genuine interest in our activities, he easily be- came one of the best friends of the class of 1949.

LEIGH D. BARNES IN l922, soon after receiving her degree from Adelphi College, Miss Barnes came to Montclair High where she has been an active member of the faculty ever since. Although she has taught history and botany, Miss Barnes has devoted her teaching talent primarily to English. Her courses have provided not only thorough training in the skills of English, but also excellent understanding of the back- ground and literature of the language. Her friendly, understanding personality and her influential nature have contributed to her suc- cess as a teacher. Miss Barnes is a great lover of out-of-door life, and although she has enjoyed her work thoroughly, she admits that she will now have much more time to realize the ambitions which she has considered during her professional career. We feel sorry that she is leaving, but we wish her the very best of luck in her plans for the future.
