With hopes of good luck to him always, the seniors dedicate the I949 yearbook to James R. Quill, their friend and teacher. JAMES R. QUILL AS an undergraduate at Amherst, Mr. Quill played football. After receiving his B.A. degree in l9l3, he taught for one year in Massachusetts. Moving to New Jersey, for two years he taught mathematics and coached football and basketball at Cliffside Park High School. Enlisting the day after war was declared, he served for two years in the army, six months of which he spent in France as a lieutenant in the ll7th Field Artillery of the Dixie Division. After the war he returned to teaching and taught mathematics and coached football and track at Cliffside Park High School and Battin High School in Elizabeth. From l923 to I948 he was a member of the mathematics depart- ment of Montclair High. Mr. Quill became widely known for his gen- erous help in all of the athletic events here in Montclair. With his enthusiasm for sports and genuine interest in our activities, he easily be- came one of the best friends of the class of 1949. LEIGH D. BARNES IN l922, soon after receiving her degree from Adelphi College, Miss Barnes came to Montclair High where she has been an active member of the faculty ever since. Although she has taught history and botany, Miss Barnes has devoted her teaching talent primarily to English. Her courses have provided not only thorough training in the skills of English, but also excellent understanding of the back- ground and literature of the language. Her friendly, understanding personality and her influential nature have contributed to her suc- cess as a teacher. Miss Barnes is a great lover of out-of-door life, and although she has enjoyed her work thoroughly, she admits that she will now have much more time to realize the ambitions which she has considered during her professional career. We feel sorry that she is leaving, but we wish her the very best of luck in her plans for the future. BIG BUSINESS William C. Heugh lrene M. Bedell Charles W. Chittim John F. Landgraf Edna E. V.'s went unbeaten and the Com- mandoes lost only to Nutley. Backed by their fine coaching staff, the Montclair teams piled up an enviable record in '48. Orange, with the best backfield in the state, which included their two speedy halfbacks, Robinson and Stevens, presented a balanced and tricky team, but the Mounties outscored this fast, hard-running outfit by a 33 to 2l count. Jack McMahon romped for three touch- downs on passes from Joe Fortunato, who had an astounding average of ten completions in fifteen attempts on his passes. Montclair received its first defeat in two years at the hands of an inspired Kearny High team which capitalized re- peatedly on recovered fumbles and inf tercepted passes, Kearny's forces were L x N X x x x x x X ll- 5 xx., LQ, I led by AI Webster and Bill Gurkas, who ran and passed exceptionally well, and Wagner, whose 69-yard iaunt on an intercepted pass provided the win- ning margin for Kearny. Special credit should be given to Gene Naspo who filled in more than ably for the injured McMahon. Bouncing back from their defeat, Montclair subdued Nutley the next Saturday, 20-6. Pushing over all three scores in the first half on a 22-yard sprint by McMahon, a plunge by hard-driving Andy Coleman and a scoring pass from Lannin to Acocella, the Mounties contented themselves with holding the Nutley team until the final quarter when Nutley scored against the Mountie reserves. The traditional battle with an undefeated East Orange team took place the following week at Woodman Field. East Orange went off the field at half-time with a 7-O lead. Earlier, the Panthers had capitalized on a re- covered fumble and scored. Soon after the beginning of the second half, howa ever, Montclair marched for its first score with Acocella making a clutch catch of the pass from Fortunato for the touchdown. Coleman tied the score by plunging over the extra point. The Mounties then stalled an East Orange drive on the two-yard linej but when Red Jones centered the ball over Tom Brown's head in the end zone, the Panthers got an automatic safety and the lead 9 to 7. Following Acocella's 79-yard kickoff, which put East Orange in the hole, the Mounties came with a rush, with Fletcher, Di Geronimo Love, Kimber, and De Nicola ripping large holes in the drifting line of East Orange, and climaxing their drive with Coleman's crashing over with a winning score as the game ended l4-9.
