The president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer of the senior class, who were elected by popular vote, were the officers of this committee. The purpose of the Senior Council was to attend to all ot the senior class business such as the arrangements for the Wassail party, the Senior luncheon, class gifts, class dues, gradua- tion dress and announcements. ff , xl?- ' ll 62 l rl M i STUDENT-FACULTY l COMMITTEE OWING to the present situation, the Student-Faculty Committee headed by Joe Tucci, has tried to bring the school closer to the war effort. For this purpose the Victory Corps Committee, which assisted in launching the Victory Corps Program, was formed. Meanwhile, other committees, the Civics Committee, the Budget Committee, carried on with vari- ous enterprises to aid the school. In ad- dition, some of the members of this or- ganization collaborated with the faculty on special problems. Through partici- pation in these activities, the Student- Faculty members have learned to put into practice the essentials of democracy. INTERNATIONAL- CLUB THE International Club's aim for this school year was to understand other peoples for a better post-war world. Keeping this in mind, we began by studying those nations which we felt we knew least about and which were destined to play an important part in the war theatre. We accomplished this by discussions led by both speakers and students alike, movies, and speak- ers. Later in the year through an invigorating talk by Rudolph Lent, a member of the Commission to Study the Organization of Peace, many of our members were greatly aroused and were eager to learn more about and study this question which will mold the future world. O 0 O 0 C-7 Q - COMMUNITY CHEST SPEAKERS THE Community Chest Speakers group was composed this year of l7 girls and 9 boys, under the supervision of Mr. Palmer. The members volunteered their services, and their English teachers sel- ected those whom they felt most able. This year the speakers gave not only the regular plea for the Community Chest but also one for the U.S.O., which was added to the campaign. With the assist- ance of Mr. Dowd in the presentation of the speeches, the members addressed thirty-one groups in which were included Parent-Teachers organizations, churches, business groups, and other town clubs. ht H , mf V Q fi? lv: . xxm CORRESPONDENCE CLUB THE Correspondence Club has had to operate under difficulties this year because of the increasing difficulty in getting mail from over- seas. Under the leadership of Marjorie Geils, this club has found wonderful opportunities for writing to Canada, Mexico, Alaska, and other places near enough to learn through letters things of interest. We were lucky to receive addresses of some soldiers and sailors to whom we sent news of their home town and other things they might happen to ask for. lt was our aim to help them know what is going on here. Although the club is small it is very lively, interesting, and trying to make the best out of war conditions. JUNIOR RED CROSS IN this year of war the Junior Red Cross has been more active than ever, and Montclair High School has shown its hearty support in all its projects. Bookcovers with MHS printed on them were sold in school, and candy, at the football games. ln the mem- bership drive, which the Council of homeroom represen- tatives executed, lZ5l students enrolled and 5560.65 more than last year was collected. Added to all these endeavors there has been sewing and knitting for our soldiers and allies. A variety show presented by the faculty was also given for the benefit of the Red Cross. HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE DURNG its second year of existence, the Hospitality Committee, with Miss McVeigh as adviser, served in various ways-as guides for sophomores in Sep- tember, as student hosts for the eval- uators, as waiters at the Senior Wassail Party, as ushers at the Christmas con- cert-and in a general way, as hosts to new students and visitors whenever possi- ble. The Committee numbered forty-two in all, with fifteen boys and twenty-seven girls. ' ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE THE Assembly Committee is a group of about ten peo- ple, under the leadership of Mr. Barker, who help select the High School Assembly programs. During the year the committee has planned such programs as Mil- dred Dilling, the harpist, Mr. Robertson, who talked on oriental music, the Strawbridge dancers, and the Trapp family, singers. The last two were sent to us by the Griffith Foundation. ln addition to these, we also had student programs- the Bloomfield Rally, and the sopho- more orientation program, The committee also has Charge of the color guards for every assembly. i 65 ' ,las i 4. CHESS CLUB THE newest club in the school sprang up in the middle of January, riding on such a fad that teaches all over the building were forced to state to students the regulations concerning the playing of the game during classes. The membership of the club gained momen- tum until we dared to try the stunt of using live people as chess men. We then looked around for other schools with which we could play tournaments. The result was a highly suc- cessful year, under the faculty supervision of Mr. Augustine. 9' C f ' ' 1 S!! if 641 ,, ,Z ,,, QQ- I G-01 Scared. Officers elected at the first meeting were: President, Marjorie Simons, and Secretary, Tom Wright. The members have had individual projects for the year, although many of them have been doing the same thing. The making of slides for future use in biology classes has been popular, and those taking Biology this year have found the extra time very helpful in improving their class work. 1 X. Tv, SR ff. ll ' ku g i Wi S- 66 CHEMISTRY CLUB TO give chemistry students the chance to work and experiment in the lab- oratory, the Chemistry Club was organ- ized again this year. For the first time, students taking chemistry this year were allowed to join, Because of the large attendance, the club was divided into two sections, the first, composed mainly of students taking chemistry, the second, of those who took it last year. With a cas- ualty list comparable to that of the Ger- man Army at Stalingrad, the club looks forward to next year and more experi- ments, Mr, Doherty and Mr, Bradbury supervised to keep down fatalities. AVIATION CLUB THE Aviation Club is made up of pupils interested in aeronautics and who realize the importance the fu- ture holds for those in aviation. Under the guidance of Mr. Lied, the faculty adviser, and the president, Barbara Smith, the club learned a great deal from movies shown after school, These dealt with the theory of flight, the building of various types of en- gines, and the growth of different airplane plants. Several members of the club made airplanes for the government, The other officers who were very helpful and interested in the club were Lewis Zickel, vice-presi- dent, and Bill Leonard, secretary. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB WE can safely say that the photography club, under the guidance of Mr. Lzdd, has, in spite of its limited size, ren- dered more practical service to M.H.S. this past year than any other one of the school's collection of clubs, Besides their usual iobs with the Mountaineer and Amphitheatre they have handled efficiently and easily the major assign- ment of shooting more than SOO sophomores for the school rogues' gal- Iery. TRAFFIC SQUAD THE Traffic Squad, with Joe Tucci as captain, and un- der the supervision of Mr. Seelbach, has again ful- filled its duties and responsibilities for another year. ln rain or snow, sleet or sunshine, the boys were always at their posts ready for duty, Besides parking cars, pro- tecting student pedestrians, and enforcing school regu- lations, the squad also did a good job directing traffic at evening programs and lectures. x QW A 2? STAGE LIGHTING SQUAD THE Stage Lighting Squad under the super- vision of Mr. Ladd, has had a very active program this year. Under the leadership of Henry Harris, the squad directed all the light- ing and stage effects at assemblies. Their main jobs were the Christmas Concert, the Spring Concert, evening lectures and perform- ances, and operating projectors in clubs, class- rooms, and outside of school for the Air Raid Wardens. The boys had charge of all the elec- trical work in the school and all have come a step nearer to becoming expert electricians. 1104 ' 6 W- ui dance MOUNTAINEER THIS year, the Mountaineer has tried to carry on, in abnormal times, as in normal times. lt began well by establishing an all-time record high of l,O7O subscriptions. Special issues, at Thanksgiving and Christmas, were published, as in normal years, and the staff developed a new system of assigning and writing articles which smoothed out the running of the publi- cation machinery. Each issue has aided in the boosting of the war effort and war stamp sales. iii VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE COMMITTEE WITH Shepard Kays as chairman, Carl Gustafson as vice chairman, Edith Klass as secretary, and Mr, Landy as ad- viser, the Vocational Guidance Commit- tee launched a program that proved in- structive to the whole school, The first thing they did was to get a cross-section of various vocations preferred by the students and with this as a basis, they obtained instructive speakers. The sec- ond part of their program was to obtain films of the most ought after occupations. PUBLICITY COMMITTEE AND NEWSWRITING GROUP THE ultimate objective of both the Newswriting Group and the Publicity Committee, under the supervision of Mr. Wells, is to instruct pupils ll l, in the Case of the Newswriting Class, in the rudiments of newswriting and its differences from other types of writing, and l2l, in the case of the Publicity Committee lwhose members have graduated from the Newswriting Classl the pub- licizing of all school activities, both during and after classes, including the Victory Corps Program and all school sports. Amt 'X ,ac 'wr' QQ' xqxx SPORTSMAN'S CLUB THE Sportsman's Club, which has been functioning for nine years, has gone along smoothly under the leadership of President Warren Lewis, Secretary Rich- ards Hunger, and sponsor, Mr. Sprague. Bowling, which is the most popular sport in the club, started late in November with six teams competing for the cham- pionship. Several matches had been scheduled for the varsity, which was selected from the six best bowlers of the league. The Rifle Club had to be dis- continued this year due to the difficulty of transportation to an available range. The club secured some movies for the entertainment of the whole school, BIBLE CLUB THE Bible Club continued this year under the leader- ship of Mr. Freytag. The meetings were held every other Monday, with one of every four open to an outside speaker. The purpose of this club was to study the words of God and their application to our lives, and therefore was not based on denominational doctrines. ll Timothy 2:15- Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed. rightly dividing the word of truth. The curtailed activities of the club have been under the leadership of Frances Gallien, presi- dentg Frank Farley, secretary, and Bob Reid, treasurer. Miss Cope had acted as faculty adviser. it 'JL f ORCHESTRA THE Orchestra, which this year included l3 sophomores, 9 juniors, and 8 seniors, be- sides its regular rehearsals three times a week, played for assemblies, the Spring instrumental Program, the High School concert with the Glee Club, P.T.A, meetings, Dramatic Club events, and Commencement. In the thirteen years that the Montclair High School has sponsored this choir, many outstanding boys and girls have been encouraged to go on with the organization of such groups. The choir has always learned all of its music by ear , that is, without the aid of printed music. Therefore, the songs have been sung very closely like the original, native rendi- tions. THE Sophomore Glee Club is an organ- ization open to all boys and girls who aspire to do good work in singing. From this group most of the capable singers of the junior and senior year are selected. Because this year's group is unusually capable, the A Cappella choir for next year and the year following is assured . of the kind of musicians it requires. ' l x X . il . N wwe A CAPPELLA CHOIR THE boys and girls that belong to this group are those who have proven themselves capable of singing without accompaniment. That is the literal translation or the term A Cappella. The choir is invited to sing many performances, and while only a few of these can be accepted, we strive to make the best presentation that is possible under the circumstances. As in all of the music classes, the choir meets on the regular school schedule. Mr. Ward conducts the choir. ff frx A. X! X ff x, T Y sk 1 g Ay f .5 008' 'Y xi l xqcx 4 ia I. A large number of girls supported this sport this year' in fact it vied for first place among winter sports. ' No regular teams were chosen mis year. Instead the girls formed teams as they played each week. Many girls elected vol- leyball as their extra gym period re- quirement for in this game they have found a method of developing strong- er bodies and at the same time having ots of fun. Jo Belle and Mary Fletcher were elected 'president and manager respectively. 78 if Til BASKETBALL LGUD shouts screams and shrieks emanating from the girls gym dur :ng the winter months indicate the popularity of basketball No sport at tracts more girls for it affords not only fine exercise but gives opportunity to let loose voices which have been kept all day to a modest classroom pitch Numerous teams are formed and rival ry runs high throughout At the or ganization meeting Helen Speers was elected president and Jo Belle man ager Owing to the early date at which the Amphitheatre now goes to press the names of the representative team are not available X l TENNIS 1942 AFTER a winter devoted largely to indoor sports the call of the out doors was strong in the spring Thur ty three girls chose the fast game of tennis as a medium for clearing away the winter cobwebs from their brains and loosening up unused muscles Patty Lehrer and Anne Pootyes were chosen president and manager re spectively of the delegation From this number twelve entered the tour nament the others being content to win their points by seven hours of play On May 30 seven of the girls were scheduled to play Immaculate Conception s team but only three ap peared With the odds 2 l against them the MHS trio remembered the boys championship teams in foot ball baseball and track lsure we know the latter two came later but don t spoil our storyl and came through to an overwhelming victory dropping only one singles match BASEBALL 1942 PROVING that the girls know what game is called the great American Pastime titty six of them elected baseball as their spring sport under the leadership of Jo lDi Maggiol Belle. JUST JUNIORS BOVE ALL the Junior Class has stood out for its athletic achievements Records for all sports show that participation of members of the class of I944 in sports has been one of the highest If one iunior had to be chosen for outstanding sports ability it would probably be Jimmy McGurk who played first base on the varsity baseball team as a sophomore and third string fullback on Clary Anderson s State Championship team As a junior McGurk alternated with Al Dockery as fullback played varsity guard on the basketball team and continued at his first base post Of course there were others B b Iliff st r halfback as a sophomore and even better in his junior year and George Heddy who broke the high jump record with a leap of six feet two inches at the Montclair Invitation Meet ln addition to its athletic achievements our junior class will probably be the one most pro foundly affected by the war lt was in its first se mester as sophomores that the war broke out It saw the advent of air raid drills it saw the schools appearance inwardly change as protective meas ures were taken against bombings This year it enioyed going to school at nine oclock instead of eight thirty lt observed fewer of its members driving to school fewer and then no Saturday night car dates lt saw M H S athletic teams travel to the away games in public service buses and trolleys. lt was here for the inauguration of the Victory Corps Program in the courses of which the Junior Classs registration topped the other two grades. And-in I944 as seniors our Junior Class hopes to be the first class graduating after the second world war has been won. Truly then the l943 Junior Class can call itself a war class.
