This class is the twenty-lilth to graduate. It is the tourteenth to graduate under the ad- ministration ot Mr. Ferguson. lt is the seventh leap-year class. lt is the Hfth to graduate with a great part ol the world at war. It is the eleventh to go out into a nation still feeling the ettects of the famous economic collapse ol 1929. It is the largest class ever to receive diplomas from M. H. S., numbering, as we go to press, 422. It is not beyond the bounds ol possibility that it may go down in history as the largest class of all time. With the pupils of Little Falls at- tending the new regional high school beginning next fall, and with a decreased enrollment now being felt down in the grades here in Montclair, as it is in most sections ol the nation, there is every likelihood that within a few years senior classes may decrease appreciably in numbers. ln this connection, a backward glimpse at that first year in the Unewn school may be of interest. Ot the present faculty, eight were here in 1915- Mr. Conine, Mr. Hodgson, Mr. Packard, Mr. Putnam, Mr. Young, Miss Howe, Miss Smith, and Miss Woodward. The graduating seniors numbered 85, of whom, as far as available records show, 57 attended col- lege. Wellesley, Princeton, Cornell, Amherst and Dartmouth seem to have been the more popular institutions. ln the matter of percentage this first class seems to have fared less well than that ot 1940, for ot our 422, it is estimated that 233 plan to go on to universities. Their choices of colleges are not greatly dilterent. The present class has, in its linal year, spon- sored a number of innovations, the most out- standing ol them giving evidence ot an awareness on the part ol Nlontclair High of the principles, advantages and responsibilities ol democracy. One of these, the Student-Faculty Committee, has provided an opportunity for students to ex- press their opinions freely with the assurance ot a sympathetic hearing. Two others, both assem- bly programs prepared and presented by pupils, were among the major events of the year, from the point of view ot both interest and value to everyone. The Armistice Day program gave a View ol what Dutch, Chinese, German and Jewish youth was thinking on world peace. Caroline Leibensperger, who attended school in the Netherlands for nine years, said in part: They lthe Dutch youthj do want Holland to stay out of the war. They are opposed to both sides -1 they are determined to keep Holland from becoming a battleground. They used to give peace only an occasional thought. Now it is the gold at the end of the rainbow because it is no longer theirs to enjoy. Lieselotte Grube, a German girl from Berlin, spending her first year in an American school, said, among other things: ul want you to know that 1 think democracy is wonderful and just the thing for America. A democracy would not be good lor Germany .... Their idea is not as you believe--'personal freedom tirst-but the country lirst. This is a different point ot view, and you must think of it when judging Germany. Elizabeth Speers, who was born in China and lived there until a few years ago, said: Many ol the Chinese young people believe that America let them down by not coming to their aid when Japan walked into their country. We have estab- lished schools and hospitals. We have simplilied their method of writing. Chinese youth are pro- gressing very rapidly in spite of the war, which has uniliecl them as nothing else could. You can expect great things ot them in the futuref' Ot the Jewish youth in America, Herbert Bisno said: The Jewish youth ot today, in common with other young people, is doing his part in helping his assets overbalance his liabilities. By doing this the world youth will be laying a tirm foundation in the building of a universally peace- lul posterity. Despite the temporary blackout un- der which world peace is now blanketed, I am confident that when tyrants tear down the walls of justice and tolerance, free men build them up again, and let us hope that some day these walls will become indestructiblef' The VVashington's birthday assembly was unique. There were none of the usual eulogies of our lirst president: indeed, no mention was made ol him. Instead, we had an example ol the freedom ol speech which he advocated. Using as a model the popular radio program, Town Meeting of the Air,,' a lorum was held. Frank Goodman presided, introducing the speakers and handling the question period which followed. The subject was, How can we improve our high school? Sue MacMillan, in making a plea for placing more responsibilities in the hands ol the students, said: ll we are to do our part alter graduation as responsible members ol our communities, we should be having now more experiences like those we shall meet. Qnly l8'MJ of our parents voted in the last primaries. This shows we need more training in democratic leadership. Many student activities are too much under the inlluence of the faculty-some form of the honor system would make us feel we are trusted. Actually, the only thing we lack that most other schools have is student government. It canjt be that the reason is that there arenjt enough students capable ol raking responsibility. I Some high spots of Bob Brundage's talk were: uVVhat we need is non-specialized guidance and training for the non-college students, and our high school does something in fullilling this need. But more emphasis should be placed on vocas tional guidance. The school at present by no means disregards this, but it does not give it the attention it needs-a full-time vocational adviser such as college preparatory students now have. Another improvement in guiding and training the non-college group would be to provide courses in consumer training. We shall ayl be con- sumers .... lThe schoolj should educate for the intelligent use ol radio, movies and newspapers. . . . This would help the student continue his own education, out ol school .... All students should know the workings and background of community life. Hence a three-year combined history and economics course should be required, with lull discussion ol practical life problems. Anne Loeb, who styled herself a urebelf' oltered some radical suggestions: uvve are getting our education in a disjointed, disconnected way. No attempt is made to connect our various subjects - the tact that every subject has a definite label tends to break up our course. Bells divide our course as a knife divides pie into pieces-our minds shouldn't be regulated by bells. Marks, colleges and parents are all closely tied up to- gether. Our parents have drilled into us the idea that marks are the important objective of going to school. Because colleges are interested in. our scholastic records, we are apt to place a great deal ol importance on marks. Some pupils won't even express their own true opinions for fear of the eiiect on marks. My plan is to study living from all its angles. ln one class, under one teacher, learn all about the Middle Ages, for example: their art, science, literature, their place in history, and other aspects of the period necessary for a complete picture. Hamilton Winslow dealt with the more phy- sical aspects ol the school. His suggestions in- cluded longer periods in order to lessen home- work and save time now spent in passing from class to class: four marking periods a year instead of the present six, smaller classes: more stress on sports which will provide fun and recreation in later life: sound-proof walls and tloorsg a more adequate libraryg more facilities, such as a small theatre, more space for manual arts, etc. All these things take money, he said, but it an education is worth having, it will always pay back the money that is spent on it by producing better citizens for better jobs. We cannot get them all at once, but we can work toward them. I 'Of 1-574 jywqg- X ww, M ... The choir is composed of juniors and seniors who have had previous Chorus training, and occasionally sophomores who have shown unusual musical ability. Each year the choir par- ticipates in the Christmas and Spring concerts. lt also visits the various junior high schools in Montclair to show the students what type ot' musical organizations there are in the High School. This spring, the choir was again extended an invitation to sing at the New York VVorld's Fair. This invitation and the worlc done by the choir is clue to the able direction ot its conductor, Mr. Ward. The Girls' Glee Club, composed of junior and senior girls, is an organization under Mr. VVard's leadership, ol which the school is very proud. The members ot this organization are independent ot any other Glee Club. The girls are chosen tor the liine quality ot their voices rather than tor the volume of tone which is needed by a member of the A Cappella choir. This experience in singing alone with girls' voices proves very valuable to those girls who upon en- tering college become members ot girls' glee clubs. Songs ot all types and arrangements which are suited for girls, voices are sung. However, the girls sing at the Christmas Concert with the other choirs. SPIRITUAL CHOIR Another outstanding choral group is the Spir- itual Choir. They have established an unsur- passed reputation in the music ol Nlontclair High School for their interpretations ol Negro spirit- uals. They are called upon to sing many times during the year, both in school and out. The choir sings only the authentic spirituals. This choir is made up ol the outstanding voices ol' Negro pupils. Each year the choir gives a concert lor the heneht of the scholarship Iund which it created lor a student desiring to further his or her educa- tion. The requirements for this scholarship are that the student shall have been talcing the college preparatory course, have been a memher ol the choir for two years, and shall have shown out- standing ahility. CHRISTMAS CONCERT The soIt, melodious tones ol an organ stole through the auditorium and into every listening ear ol the capacity audience. As the organ pealed Iorth a loeautilul melody, every eye was lixed on the two hundred and lilty choristers adorned with white surplices draped with red stoles. The col- ored Iights shining on the figure of an angel which hovered over the singers, made a very im- pressive sight. With the strains of the I..ord's Prayer, the Christmas Concert was under way. The beauty and slcill with which the songs were sung captivated the audience. The success of the concert was, ol' course, due in large measure th ur I' Vvard to the conscientious worlc of the conductor, Ar- A-4LnJ v sr - 'v- '7 ' v , I 4,4 SPIRITUAL CHOIR OFFICERS President WILLIAM MONROE Vice-President IVIYRTLE Momus Secrefaryjlqreasllfer ELBERTA Hmrizs Manager .IULINE BARTEE Assistant Manager MARGARET WEBB 04 STAGE LIGHTING SQUAD Mary Ur-nllvs Paul Ewing clfllrgo xxvllflilflll-I Bvssiu fulmcy xxyilliillll K!'lL'l!llIll Dmmhl Dixon Rolu-rl Nlvlfwan Frank Vvlnc-4-In-r Dennis Allvnrn lfflwurml Hum: Alf. TWE TIETH Just twenty years ago, the senior class ol Nlontclair High School decided it was time the school had a year book. The Student Council took up the matter and gave its support, and liinally a vote was taken. The senior Class was unanimous and so The Amphitheatreu was born. The reason lor the choice ol name is given in the loreword ol the 1920 hook. The name, THE ANlPH1THEATRE, was chosen tor two reasons: lirst, the outdoor theatre is one ol the dis- tinctive leatures ol the lvlontclair High School: second. 'All the world's a stage Where every man must play a part., Each class, as it goes through High School, stages a three-act dramag then, alter the climax ol the senior year, the curtain lalls, the lights lade out, and the actors are gone forever. It is only upon the stage ol THE AMPHITHEATRE that the well-known laces can be seen again,-only there that the events and triumphs ol the school lile will pass again in unending review. The graduating class ol 1920 was composed ol' one hundred eighty-six seniors. ln addition, there were thir- teen post-graduates, only two ol whom were boys. Her- bert VV. Dutch was the principal, Elsie M. Dwyer, the vice-principal, and Ralph Foster Perry was the assistant to 1Vlr. Dutch. That year there were seven major sports--loot ball, basketball, ice hockey, swimming, track, baseball and tennis. The lootball team had a fairly successful season. winning two games and tying one. The basketball team won the N.J.I.A.A. Championship for the third successive year. The hockey team was also a championship team. Al- though twenty games were scheduled, because ol weather conditions only seven were played. ln spite ol these con- ditions, the hockey season lasted three months. The ten- nis team won tive out ol eight games and reached the finals in the championship. There was a grand total ol four clubs-Debating, the Commercial Club, Le Cercle Francais, and a Greek Club. The school paper was the monthly uBu1letin. The faculty was composed ol lorty-eight members, fourteen ol whom are members ol our present faculty. The class ol 1020 also started the precedent ol the senior class gilt to the school. 110 N NIVEHSHHY If the 1920 AMPHI'l'HEATRE had had a Ra, member page, it would prohahly have ma something like this: RCmCmi3Ef? The Paris peace Conlerence summoned Holland to yield up the Kaiser tor trial. The French government granted permission tor the removal to the United States of the bodies ot twenty thousand American soldiers huried in France. On the sixteenth ot January at midnight the Eight- eenth Amendment, calling tor the prohihition ol' intoxi- cating liquor, went into elntect. Since a war-time prohi- bition had heen in etlect since June 50, 1910, the only elitect of the Eighteenth Amendment was an increase oil enforcement olticers along with a proportional increase in spealceasies and home-hrewing. The railroads were returned to private control. Jaclc Dempsey was lound not guilty alter being tried lor dralit-dodging during the war. All over the South, people watched the growth oi' an organization lcnown as the Ku Klux Klan. On the lighter side, hooks being read were The Age ot lnnocencef' hy Edith Nvharton, a Pulitzer Prize story: ulxflain Street, hy Sinclair Lewisg and The Americaniza- tion ol' Edward Bolen an autohiography. Popular plays were usmilin' Through and Hlwlaryfl a musical comedy hy George lxl. Cohan. The latest song hits were Hldoolc for the Silver Lining, Hhlargief' HAvalon, and Uvvhis- peringhu The Charleston and 'lulihe Blaclchottomn were the newest dance crazes. Remember? Yes, that would he a HRememher page ot the 1020 Amphitheatre Vve, the class ot 1040, salute the Class of 1920, and hope that we have done as good a join in our high school years as they did. 219 0 PWIIDHTE Q Ht.
