Though the donation of M s is confined to the students you teachers each and every one of you - l deserve that letter and all the esteem that might go The service you have given us is not entirely repay able How may we show our gratitude to you for your work? We may appear ungrateful on the out side but 1nwardly we realize how good you all have been to us. Our debt to you is heavy but we shall live to repay you as far as we are able. Teachers we shall always count you as our friends We leave school but not you. The committee started work with the opening of school. If they have anything to say about it-it s going to be a knockout! The unior class is well represented in athletics as well as in various club activities Harry Atcheson has been prominent in football this year playing on the varsity team while Robert McKenna has been active in hockey and Dan Austin and DeForest Voor- hees have been w1nn1ng laurels in track The girls too have played an active part in basketball hockey and swimming We are proud to say that the majority of girls on the varsity team are of our class They Clara Wayne and Frances Sis Amundson Neither must we forget in considering school activities jean Burns our coming actress Jean by her portrayal of the old lady in The old lady shows her medals cently played a great part in winning the dramatic contest for M. H. S.. The Junior class oflicers are: Jack Rust president' James Petrie vice-president Betty Ifowler secretary and Allen Kirkwood treas- urer. We chose Jack Rust James Petrie Frances Amundson and Betty Fowler to represent us on the Student Council. With such a Junior class as ours M. H. S. will soon see what a real Senior class can do. just wait till next year! Well show you!! .- . 1 whom we elected for our president. At first we progressed very slowlv owing to the extreme confusion of multi- tudes of hundreds of faces lunch rooms co.ored slips and stairways every which way. But we soon sur- inounted these difficulties and settled down to a regular routine. Many members of our class secured positions on the athletic teams-football basketball and hockey. We were able to furnish considerable noise in the orches- tra and Glee Club and considerable talent in the Cercle Francais and other school organizations. l1Vhen the Honor Roll was printed at mid year the Sopho mores led by a large majority all of which goes to prove what an all round good class we are' But quite the most ambitious flight of the year was the Sophomore Mixer Lmdberghs hop across the Atlantic was no more successful as it seemed to us than our Sophomore Hop The presence of the Robinson graced the occasion There were many at tractions in dancing presented bv the students Of these was a Good News chorus with Claudia Zan grillle Marjorie Lawson Dorothy Salle Katharine Corney Dorothy Macdonald Isabella Hussa Florence Archer and 'lheresa Romano. 1' hree solo dances were Louis Wonilule s combination Charleston Black Bottom Varsity Drag and Clog dance Claudia 7angrillies Varsitv Drag and Laura Berge s dance. Dorothy Thomas sang a soprano solo Loves a Merchant ' Dorothy Dunn recited two im- personations' and Antonio Scarans gave a Spanish castanet selection. Music for dancing was furnished by the Musical Skippers orchestra. Doesnt that sound like a pretty good beginning for our grand and glorious to be career in High School? I. A. A. championship. The team got off with a good start by defeating Newark Academy ll to 6. South Orange conquered us in a drizzling rain, and two days later liarringer won out in a free- hitting game. Alu Friend's masterful work on the mound, backed by good support from the rest of the team, defeated our old foes from East Orange, 4 to 0, and Plainfield, 3 to 0. The next three games were lost to Dickinson, Caldwell, and East Orange. Emerging from their slump, the team proceeded to win three of the four remaining contests. In two league games. Barringer was shut out, 3 to 0, and the league-leading Dickinson outtit decisively beaten, 6 to 1. Bloomfield nosed us out, 4 to 1, in a well-played game, but Glen Ridge was beaten by the same score in the Iinal con- test of the season. Captain Nick Rubino and XVil- lard Cole formed a strong combination around second base, while Al Friend's brilliant pitching throughout the season won him a place on the mythical All-State team. Prospects are bright for 1928 with most of last year's veterans returning to school. ' '1LF - ' ' W ' E if' - .-..4.ie,4m-..fA,L..L' -- haf: .-. gn-L.2..aB!' --' -' 1' 515. 1 .. ,..,,,... S. tradition of good hockey teams. Hur only defeats were sutlered at the hands of Carteret, liast Orange. and Montclair Acaclemy. Carteret is now State champion in the prep school ranks. We later defeated the other two in return games. The season opened with a victory over Rutherford. ,Xfter losing to East iflrangc, the Mountaineers dc- feated Cornish. They then lost to Carteret hy one hard-earned goal. Morristown, lllair, Montclair Academy, and liast Orange, in that order, fell victims to the skill of L'lu1lmlmio and his gang. The season closed with a 2 to 1 defeat hy Montclair Academy. '.l'he season was notable for lack of ice, liolm liulilfs harmonica, and .lim l'etrie's skin guards. ln spite of many handicaps it was a total success. Captain ................. Ihey now see that proper order is kept on the stairs and in the lines, The supervision of the lunch- rooms is conducted by members of this squad under the direction of Mr. Young. A two weeks sentence at straightening chairs is the penalty imposed for viola- tion of the rules, This squad also has charge of the filing in assemblies and sees that it goes as smoothly and rapidly as possible. The third division of the traffic force is the corridor squad. This squad provides for a man to be on duty in the corridor of each floor every period during the day. The object in view is the convenience of strangers who are unfamiliar with the building and also a pre caution against those who have no business roaming about the corridors during school hours ant factors in our student government and IS a splendid example of our ability to rule ourselves We owe much of the credit for our organization to Mr Young who has worked faithfully to see us through our many difficulties OFFICERS OF IHE OUTDOOR SQUAD Captain ..... ....... ........ One of the most interesting and import- ant events was a discussion of the Monroe Doctrine, which was chiefly concerned with Spain at its begin- ' SPANISH CLUB ning, and which came in very nicely with the history work the members were just then undergoing. The chief aims of the Club are to practice speaking Spanish outside of school, and to study Spanish cus- toms and manners, subjects which would most lend to bring about a sympathetic understanding of that coun- try. The club is composed of members of second and third year Spanish classes who are interested in the study of Spanish beyond a mere taking of the course. This year, under the leadership of Mr. Putnam, the faculty advisor, the club l1as carried out several big projects. On the twenty-seventh of February, in the auditor- ium, a scene from Aristophanes' Frogs was presented before nearly two hundred students and teachers of various junior High Schools in Montclair. The cast was: Aeachus, Elizabeth Ashbyg Dionysus, Frances XVrightg Xanthias, Jeannette Hulstg slaves, Gerald Trenbath and Geoffrey Berrien. The play, presented in the original Greek, was enthusiastically received. Fol- lowing it came a talk by Mr. Putnam, who so enlight- ened the audience on Greek that they were able to trans- late two complete sentences from Greek to English. The purpose of this program was to interest the pupils of the Junior High in studying Greek in the High School. The Greek club has also made several trips into New York, visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and seeing several Greek plays. Also, it contributed a con- siderable sum of money to the support of the American College in Athens. The crowning event of the year was the annual picnic. The entire club turned out and had a wonderful time. cfsef.m.a:.1.: - . . 1 .. 1, T A-Q - 1 --4, i, -,,,v,-Q 43,5 :J-:'e:v , n-' Kim 1 -:rr-f.
