Munson We, the class of Nineteen Hundred and FiftyfFour, proudly and fondly dedicate this yearhook to the Head of the Latin Department, Mr. Claude W. lvlonson, who, for more than thirtyffive years, has heen a friend to faeulty and students alike. All of us have had eontaet with Mr. hdoll' son in one Xvay or another. many have had the henelit of his xvisdom in either a mythology or a Latin elass. Every Senior is aided lay Mr. lvlonson iii eonneetion with College Board Examinations and has eome to rely upon his assistance. Those who have not had direct eonf taet with Mr. Ivlonson have still eome to knoxv and to respect this friend to all for his serviees to Nlontelair Academy. One important faet that we should menf tion is that Mr, lvlonsoifs entire life has heen spent in the tradition of the Nnohle Roman of the prefCaesar Repuhlie. The primary pref cept of that tradition xvas that a man's life should he one of relentless, unselfish devotion to duty. Vv'e shall long rememher his favorite ex' pressions, his aneedotes, and his hne sense of humor. hut, even more, xve shall reeall the kind xvay in xvhieh he has tried to instill in us hoth of the world ol' the Romans and the xvorld in xvhieh we live. For all you have done to make us hetter appreciate life, xve thank you, Mr. Monson .... ...v je 41 al fi t' ,fm acuity i l .. t-E, ? , Q Q B f 7' , r fa '1 4 avr. , 41 K3 V, . ,f - f .2 ,A I ' ,,f V Q 1' ' 6 ! 4 A fl! All we can do is to say thanks, Mr. Hackett, for everything and good luck in all your future endeavors. Headmaster surfing, , Upon the resumption of classes aftei a Thanksgiving vacation, which was lengthened by one day in recognition of the accomplishments of the football team, the topic of special interest was the successful football season. The team had made the best record in the last six years-four victories .and three defeats. Of the losses, two were by the narrow margin of one touchdown and might have been won up to the last few minutes of the game. Great credit and heartiest congratulations are due to the squad and the coaches for a season of which all may bc proud. With a championship basketball team which was co'champion in the spring, the Academy has established itself as a top'contender in our Little Ivy League. Our most notable material gain this school'year -has been the new furniture in our Assembly and Study Hall. One hundred and fifty desk and seat combina- tions were donated by the P.T.A. and the recently graduated class of 1953. In order that this new furniture might have the proper setting, the Trustees re- decorated the Assembly Hall which presented a bright new appearance on the opening of school. Through the further generosity of the P.T.A., a football score- board was added to our athletic equipment and this, displayed in a prominent position on the top of the fence, keeps the spectators wellfinformed as to the progress of the game. On the scholastic side we were highly gratified with the encouraging and complimentary report of the Evaluation Committee, representing the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, which visited the Academy last February. Our school was generously commended and a number of helpful sug' made for our consideration with a view to further improvement. gestions were Our record of college admissions was especially commended. Over a period of the past six years, only two graduates on the average each year have failed to attend college and in the majority of cases this has been because they accepted positions in business immediately or were called into the service. Of our last graduating class we have two representatives at Yale, one at Princeton, three at Williams, one at Amherst, one' at Wesleyan, one at M.I.T., two at Cornell, three at Bowdoin, one at Northwestern, two at the University of Colorado, one at Lafayette, one at Lehigh and three at' Vermont. The Senior Class and the Student Council' have started the year energetically and have been setting the student body an excellent example of positive and intelligent leadership. There is a sense of direction and cooperation which augurs well for the success of the year. We have made a good beginning and we shall make a good ending. Our thanks and very best wishes for the future are extended to the Class of 1954. acuity THOMAS A ADAIR Lafayette College French Years at MA 3V2 F1 ' WILLIAM A BARRAS Princeton University English Years at MA -M thx 1 if HQN - A :N rpg, v ,-. They make a great au L for Pepsodcnt. d0n't they? But the Class of '35 is also prominent in other activities. Paul Nejelski and Larry Mzirtin toiled tirelessly to turn out a respectable news' paper. Arnett and Martin held key positions on the Octopus staff. Smith, Stamato, Grosse, and Nejelski helped the AudiofVisual Depart' ment. The Glee Club claimed many juniorsg and Grosse, Mockridge, Wilstnn, and Brolli emote for Wechsler's hams. But it would be a mistake, almost an inf justice, to describe the extraordinary capacity of the Class of 1955 by merely listing its many achievements, Let us not lose sight of the leadership shown by the juniors socially, scholf astically, athletieally, and, most important, morally. Let us remember that achievement arises from ability and determination. Ability is sus' tained and strengthened by effort, blended by diversity, and held upright by sincere purpose. Herein lies the true strength of the juniors. X 1511 kcfball Among the memories of the Class of '54, the haskethall season in their Senior year, unsurf passed in Nlontclair Academys modern history, will certainly rate very high, Besides defending successfully the North jersey Ivy League chamf pionship, Coach Van Brunt's sterling group went undefeated 16 times in regular season competition and split two decisions in the Essex County Tournament. Vsfith three victories at the end of the previous season, the consecutive win streak was extended to 19, shifting the responsihility for a spotless record to the '5-1755 squad, Added to this hurden is the fact that there will he some largefsize shoes to fill next year. Certainly Stan Traymore will not he replaced. Stan, a fourfyear varsity veteran and captain of the team for two seasons, hit the magic lflflflfpoint scoring mark for his prep school career, He also exccdcd his previous record with a season total of 471. In recognition of Traymore's ahility, he was presented the Octopus Award to the outstanding Senior athlete. The other Seniors were Al Brummerstedt and Chap jcaohus, veteran guards not only adept on defense but as well skilled in scoring from the outsideg and Phil Donlin and joel Kaplan. Two juniors, Mickey Cohen and Keet Arnett, filled out the starting quintet, Cohen supplied some much needed height and, fur' thermore, followed Traymore in the scoring department. Although the season in general ran 'a smooth course, there were two games in parf ticular that almost ended the winning streak: the second College High contest, tied at the last second hy a spirited C,H.S. team and won in overtime hy Traymore's six pointsg and the first Uratory game, in which Oratory reduced Acadcmyls lead to one pointsin the fourth period and then faltered as the RedfandfBlack recovered a sixfpoint lead. Beyond that, the team brought home Coach Van Brunt's second League trophy for 1953. The Ivy League crown was shared with Cratory, who had the same, 511, record that lvlontclair did. Significantly, however, MA won the only game between the two schools. The empty infield was Hlled by Ramee, at firstg Traymore or Sucofl, at secondg Brummerf stedt, at third: and Pete Smith, at shortstop. Coningsby was the receiver, Connolly, Arnett, and Johnson shagged flies in the outeld. Fradf kin, Traymore, Donlin, and Arnett composed the pitching staff, the last three will be hcrc next year. The Hnal game, which clinched the flag, was a tenfinning affair with Eastern. lvfontclair was forced to come from behind twice, the second time in the last half of the tenth. Dave Connolly drove in the tying run, advanced around the bases by stages, charged home on a steal, and scored, howling the catcher over. The final score was 5-4, and the game was an exciting and fitting climax to the season. Before the 3f3 tie with Eastern, the Acad' emy caught fire and took 5 straight. Delharton, St. .Bernard's, Oratory, Englewood, and College High all fell. The two worst losses suffered by the Red' andfBlack were at the hands of Newark, 15f4, and Pingry, 8-1. Fortunately, neither were League contests, The two most cofoperative teams on the schedule were St. Bernard's and College High, both of whom lost two to MA.
