Koch. Dr. Koch is well known to the student body as being former Head of the Chemistry Department. In this, his first year as President, Dr. Koch has initiated many new policies which have been well received by the stu- dents. R. Rowe and W. Brown, Editors (5) MONTANA SCHOOL OF MINES BUTTF.. MONTANA OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT December 7, .yb I To the Students of Montana School of Mines: Another year has passed and in passing has recorded much in accomplishment, in progress, in change of status. For each of you the record is different, but for all of you there has been the satisfac- tion of living in a dynamic era. This past year has been one of improved or ganization, improved understanding, and a marked revitalization of the ASSM in its role of student government. The student council can feel justly proud of its many accomplishixients in the interest of the students on our campus. Such accomplishments don ' t just happen; they are created through hard work and attention to the many problems wanting solution. Boys grow into m.en under the stress of responsibility. This Magma formis a partial history of the year just concluded, that part which deals withpeople, classes, organizations, and activities. It is a book you will cherish for the rest of your lives; it will be fondly reviewed countless times as the years pass following graduation, each timie bringing back in sharp retrospect the year 1957-58 at Montana School of Mines. To the Seniors 1 wish bon voyage. Remember always, wherever you go, whatever you do, your Alma Mater is proud of your attainments and holds you dear in its heart. Cordially yours. Edwin G. Although ably mentored by Coach Ed Simonich, the team was v eak both in depth and experience, and plagued by Asiatic flu and injuries. Halfback Tom Martin led the Miner offense on the ground with an average of six plus yards per carry, while Quarterback Gary Riley completed 26 passes out of 55 tries to lead the conference. As Coach Simonich stated, As far as fighting determination on the squad, there ' s been no equal. Connell Prof. Albertson, Advisor DEBATE The Montana School of Mines forensic squad is one of the oldest and most active organizations on the campus. This year the debate squad took part in five tournaments: The Gem State Jamboree (Pocatello), Co- lumbia Valley (Pullman), Linfield Forensic Meet (McMinnville), Montana State Inter- collegiate (this year at Dillon), and the T.K.A. (Missoula). In the past five years M.S.M. has been three times state winners. (106) Drama M. Sullivan H. Duke R. Wayment D. Malyevac D. Hendricks D. Diekman G. Parker B. Todd T. Martin E. McCallum S. Such suc- cessful plays as You Can ' t Take It With You, The Silver Whistle, All My Sons, and Stalag 17 have been presented. This year ' s play was the popular My Three Angels, whose three (often not so angelic) convicts, along with others of the cast, delighted their audiences. ( 107] Ski Club J. McVey G. Alexander A. A S • isS S Know Montana History-minded Montana Montana became history-minded at an early period of its existence. The Territory of Montana was created under Act of Congress which was approved May 26, 1864. Only 21 months later Col. Wilbur F. Sanders of Virginia City fame and his associates had brought about the passage of a measure creating an historical society. The first meeting of the organization was held in the office of Dance and Stuart, Virgmia City, on Feb. 25, 1865. The first president, temporary and permanent, was Granville Stuart. He also was the first treasurer. H. L. Hosmer v as the first historian. The first board of directors was composed of Hosmer, Sanders, Malcolm Clark, Chris P. Higgms and Walter W. DeLacey. F. M. Thompson was chairman of the committee which nominated these officers. Stuart, Thompson and Hosmer were the members of the committee that selected the society ' s seal. The society was created as exciting history was being made. There v asn ' t much historical material to work on, except the recollections of the trail blazers themselves. However, the society did take a firm foothold in those early days and has maintained an existence without interruption. For eight years the society depended upon individual effort in the collection of both material and funds. The first legislative appropriation was signed May 7, 1873, and provided for an annual payment of $150 for the purchase of manuscripts and books relating to the territory and for other expenses.
