AMERICA . . .A LAND OF FREEDOM AND OPPORTUNITY. . . A LAND BORN OUT OF 200 YEARS OF STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM AND UNITY, A STRUGGLE WHICH STILL EXISTS IN MANY WAYS TODAY. THIS AMERICA, OUR HOME, CAME ABOUT BECAUSE OF DESIRES FOR FREEDOM FROM OPPRESSION AND FOR FREEDOM FOR A PERSON TO MAKE A LIFE FOR HIMSELF AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE THAT LIFE. NORTHERN Montana College also came about because of desires . . . the desires of many people to develop an institution of higher learn- ing to serve the northern part of Montana. Northern too has encountered many struggles throughout its history, and has been victorious in all of them. A bill was first passed in 1913 authorizing the establishment of such and instutition and also bringing about the first of many struggles. Attempts were made from the time of passage of that bill in 1913 until 1927 to get a bill passed which would provide funding for the school. In 1927 a bill was passed which included the school as part of the University system, but still no funds were made available for its operation. THE community of Havre began to actively campaign for these funds in 1929, and the legislature finally passed a bill providing the funding necessary to get the school started. THE doors of Northern Montana School opened on October 1, 1929. THE second maior struggle faced by the school was in 1933 when a bill was introduced in the legislature to close the college. The community again arose to the occasion and the bill was defeated. THE struggles Northern has faced since that time have dealt mainly with the problems of obtaining funding for buildings and curriculum development. The one exception to this occurred in 1973 when the college again faced the possibility of being closed. The community and the students met the problem and the college remained open. THROUGH the endeavors of many people for ever sixty years, Northern Montana College stands as a symbol of freedom. That freedom is available to all who wish to better their lives by obtaining a higher level of education. i-4 s. I ll FFF! '- 'Q
