Writing Paper. 75 Years and Going Strong The students of MSU come and go. never lingering long enough to •xperience the changes that slowly alter the ice of their school. That is why the constants. :he traditions, can be so important. The Exponent has been a constant on campus for 75 years now. But being a constant has made the many changes the paper had gone through all the more apparent; it’s been an interesting 75 years. The Exponent actually began as a monthly newsletter published by the administrative staff of MSU. But it wasn’t long before students took over the operation and transformed the Exponent in to a bonifide weekly newspaper. At four pages, the Weekly Exponent was hardly a major foray into the world of jour- nalism. But nevertheless, the first decade from 1910 to 1919 provided some hot news stories. Among the major stories from the era were the beginnings of many long standing MSU traditions such as the white-washed M on Mount Baldy and the MSU football team nickname, the Bobcats. It was a simpler, friendlier time, when the paper reported the visits of parents and friends and the classes fought it out every year with the tug-of-war over the frog pond on the west edge of the campus. But it was also a time of death and sacra-fice, as the toll of WW1 began to ring for the students and alumni of MSU. When the twenties roared in. the Exponent was there roaring right along. In 1925 an Exponent columnist suggested that the Charleston was now the dance to do. And if you and your gal weren't dancing up a storm at one of the fraternities, you could always catch the latest Charlie Chaplin film at the Rialto or watch the MSU basketball team, the Golden Bobcats, garner one of their best records in the history of the school. Since this is the Montanan, it seems only appropriate to remember the big scandal of the 1930's, covered by a faithful Exponent reporter. The 1933 Montanan centered around a scraggly bearded bum named Mjork who appeared in the arms of sorority women and on benches all across campus. The annual lampooned every sacred cow on campus and raised some administrative eyebrows. But the Exponent later reported that Dale Rivens, the editor of the '33 Montanan, was later vindicated by the overwhelming positive national response to his remarkable creative annual. The forties brought war. The Exponent duly recorded the dismal roll call of the dead and reported that this year there would be no spring vacation; the students were needed to harvest the sugar beet crop. Yet despite all this, the spirit and energy of the students, and in turn, the Exponent, remained high. The students who had been asked to grow up a bit early realized that it was all a part of surviving. Of winning. The decades following the war saw rapid changes in the Exponent and MSU. For the first time, the Exponent began to cover the real news stories that we associate with a newspaper today. The layout and the style o; writing took on a higher level of professional ism and style. The fifties and the sixties saw the begin nings of a new type of student: informed, involved and sometimes cynical. Stories anc editorials on the new five day school week Vietnam and the new medium of television began to fill the Exponent’s pages. Looking back, the paper was a bit behind in realizing the current of revolution that was sweeping the nation elsewhere. Nevertheless by the I970’s the paper was publishing a regu lar column on the women’s liberation move ment and was even tackling such sensitive issues as homosexuality, rape and corruption in politics. Beginning in the early I980’s the Exponen: pulled a bit of coup within the ASMSU hie rarchy and began to make money. It was good sign for a paper that is continuing to grow and achieve new levels of dedication an. professionalism. One can only guess at wha: the future holds for the Exponent, but if the past 75 years arc any indicator, this is only th. xg nn ng. -Tim LeCair XT'- kr yizr 68 The Birth of a Station The idea of an MSU-based television station had been floating around since the 1960s with the nursing school's reception of black-and-white television equipment. The idea came up again, when in 1974, the university had hoped to begin broadcasting PBS programs through a statewide public television network. KMPT. But amid charges of mismanagement, bad faith, and eventually a legislative investigation. KMPT disintegrated before it ever got on the air. But the idea never got away; in June of 1983. MSU asked for a low power license to operate on the reserved educational channel in the Gallatin Valley. Two things made the application possible. The first was the completion of the Visual Communications Building, and the second was the gift of a rebuilt television tower and transmitter from the Garryowcn Corporation (both now sit atop South Hedges dormitory). After the call letters, KUSM. were decided on (KCATS, KMOO and the obvious KMSU were all taken) the station, it was decided, would broadcast popular PBS programs such as Nova and Masterpiece Theatre and of course, the popular children's programs such as Sesame Street. The Electric Company, etc. Finally, with help from a Burlington Northern Foundation grant in September of 1984, the idea was about to become a reality. At 7 a m. on Monday. October 1.1984, the Electric Company kicked off Montana’s first public broadcasting channel (Montana was the last of the 50 states without one). KUSM is rcbroadcasting PBS through a formal agreement with KUED in Salt Lake City, as well as a few KUED generated programs. with 15 hours of the day produced locally. Some initial problems hampered the station; eventually the station’s costs would have to be covered by private donations, and unforsccn costs pushed the station’s fund drive to a S48-S50.000 goal, up S20.000 from an initial goal of $30,000. The reason for the costs, according i station manager Jack Hyyppa, is that mi h of KUED’s late night programming and -ome during the day is distributed by independent producers who do not fall under the a ree-ment with KUED. making this program ning more costly than at first believed. The costly programs meant that Kl 'M’s programming was not as complete at th . tart as many had hoped. But by May, Hyypp; was confident that KUSM’s needed funds w mid be raised by a July I deadline. “I’m a little worried. said Hyyppa but I’m certainly not panicked. Helping ca the worries is “Friends of KUSM. a grou that rose from the former “Friends of Children's Programming.” “Friends. led by director Nancy Flikkema, raises a majority of th private donations that keeps the station op rating. By May, KUSM was short S9.000 n its goal of at least S30.000 by July I, but with fund raising help from Friends, H; ; ppa said he was “still optimistic about the und raising goal. The birth of the station, the nation’s s tallest with a viewing radius of 5-10 mile- has been a boost both to the Gallatin Valley •• swing audience and to the many students who gain on-the-job experience while keepin. the station operating. Children’s programs mg, something many Americans have grown up with, is now available to rural Gallatin Valley Children, and as for the students, who a ong with staff members produced more than 30 programs during 1984-85. The 1 '■ • Pulitzer Prize-winning drama by Beth He kicked off the season on October 31. and tmished its ten day run as easily the biggest money-maker of the department's season And as if monetary success wasn't enough, the production came close to copping mythical national championship as well. The drama, which starred Carrie Stauber. Stephan Hardy, Kathleen Fuhrmann. I.isa MeGrory • Dan Erickson, and John Lovick, was dire'. by Jahnkc. who also handled set design with Mary Alice White. The story revolved around three sisters living in the south who arc brought back together by a family crises. The youngest sister has s hot her husband and the rest of the family must deal with the situation. Along the way. th . ers discover how deep their ties to the family really arc. Although the drama takes place in only a kitchen. Jahnkc said the set design was a detailed, realistic set. “It’s actually quite complicated, said Jahnkc. The drama immediately received good reviews; Exponent drama critic John Akrc said. The play includes all the standard disasters ripping apart standard southern lives: failed careers, incurable illness, murder attempts, loneliness, suicide, dead animals — in short, everything that seems to be a part of the ‘dying south’. The kudos didn't stop there. “Crimes. which was entered in regional play competition, was selected to perform at Festivention 5 at Weber State College in Ogden, Utah. Festivention is a regional play competition for the Rocky Mountain College Theatre Association and the American College Theatre Festival. The MSU production was selected from a field of 34 entries in the five state Rocky Mountain Region. It was adjudicated by two regional judges in November during its regular run. Following all of the regional competitions nationwide, a selected number of productions were chosen to appear at the Kennedy center for the performing arts in Washington D.C. in April. Six cast members, six crew members, and three faculty members made the trip to Ogden, along with the entire set. props and costumes. “While we arc all very proud of the accomplishments of our national championship football team, we should be equally proud of our own MSU Theatre Bobcats, Jahnkc said prior to leaving for Ogden. “Crimes of the Heart is essentially only one performance away from becoming a national championship for MSU as well. Although “Crimes wasn't chosen for the Kennedy Center, the cast and crew were “cautiously optimistic after the performance at Weber State, according to Theatre Department faculty member Gerald Roc. The drama was judged along with two other productions. BYU’s Hcartlight and Lewis and Clark College’s “Deviners . Roe said MSU’s performance was nothing short of “glorious . Roe added that there was “little comparison between “Crimes and the other two productions. “MSU was by far the best. You can’t argue with the response. All the adjudicators’ remarks were positive. Although he said “Crimes probably won the regional competition, winning in one of the 15 national regions by no means guaranteed a trip to Washington, since the Kennedy Center had to come up with a balanced season of dramas, comedies, and musicals. in addition to the drama’s success, two cast members were selected to compete for the Irene Ryan Scholarship. Stauber. of Bozeman, and Fuhrmann, of Helena, were selected to compete with others for a S500 scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to Washington. D.C. For the regional competition, each performed a four-minute scene, and each selected fellow cast member Dan Erickson as their scene partner. What was it that made “Crimes so successful? Faculty member Tish Herries said. “Being a very recent play made it appealing. Also, I think it was well received because it contained three women characters and was written by a woman. Herries said that “Crimes ranks as one of the best productions in recent years at MSU. “Certainly one of the most outstanding in terms of quality of acting and the message; it had a warm, cmpathctic feeling to it. and I think this has reaffirmed that to begin the school year with an upbeat drama like this is important. —Andy Roesgen 0 0 frrvTW The COMPANY Dances On I's taken a while, but it looks as if the MSU Dance Company is finally headed the big leagues. The big leagues, that is. : college dance troupes. The show paid for itself. —It was that kind of turnout, and increases student support in the program (Van Norman said she received “tons of calls concerning the troupe at the start of the season) th... allowed the company to start touring in 'SS. —Following the Lcwistown concert, the troupe played to a full house at the Willson auditorium on January 17. The concert, which used a compilation of dances from the company's past five years, was the first winter concert from the company in four years. —That winter concert was just one of the many goals Van Norman set for the company in 1985, since the majority of the company’s work goes into the annual spring concerts, set for May 30-Junc 2. —In addition, the company got a chance to check out the moves of other dance companies in the region at the Regional Dance competition held in Missoula February 21-24. —“It was really interesting to sec other schools’ work,” said Van Norman, “and we got some real positive feedback on what we did. —But Van Norman’s work extended off the dance floor as well. In 1985. she along with co-instructor Rozan Pitcher, worked out an accreditation plan with the university to make dance a minor field of study, opening job possibilities such as dance and aerobic instructors. —In addition. Van Norman and Pitcher were still working on gaining some sort of grant for the company to allow a smaller group of company members to tour smaller cities in the state, where dance is not always appreciated. “Most people don’t have a clue about dance. said Van Norman, so we'd like to get out and show them. —Of course, the company's sights were set primarily on the original, annual spring concert, a mainstay of the company’s work. The costumes arc hand-made, and the dances are choreographed by the dancers or by Van Norman and Pitcher. —“WcVc worked really hard for this concert. said Van Norman. “I think we’ve all been working harder because we can see the end in sight. —In retrospect. Van Norman called 1984-85 a tough year. The dancers have worked really hard, and we expanded the program in a lot of ways. But the hard work has been worth it. The company started breaking even with ticket sales four years ago. and the profits from this year's shows will go for more touring and the addition of a summer dance tour. Co.« Emnvt Help for those Math Messes If only every curriculum had one. In 1978. the Math Department developed a center where students would have a complete station of math materials and faculty tutors to help get them through the maze of common denominators, exponent powers and other assorted math messes. The Math Learning Center in Willson Hall provides a “study area where students can get immediate feedback. according to faculty member Mary Pohl. The center provides instructional tapes and videos in addition to textbooks, and is staffed by as many as five faculty members at a time. The center is actually split between calculus course assistance and lower levels of math. Pohl says the feedback from students has been “real positive. —Andy Rocsgcn C � c tkxTc a ay Care Cares Just as the ASMSU Day Care Center nurtures young children in the most formative years of their lives, it seems the center itself is also maturing. But now in its eiy year, the center may be growing a little too rapidly. Licensed to handle 28 children at a time, but se ;ng 60-70 children throughout the week c Center has racked up a “very long” waiting list, according to Center director Jeanne l.ggert. But EggerT couldn't be happier with the growth. “We do have a long-range goal of expanding the facility, but at this point, nothing has been O.K.'d yet. When the program began in 1977, Eggcrt says the facility was half its present size and handled only 14 children at a time, as regulated by the state. Three full-time employees currently staff the center, while the remaining workers are usually students from work-study programs. Eggcrt says the Center attracts students from lots of different areas including the P.E. Department, home economics, nursing, and particularly from education fields. The majority of volunteers are in curriculums related to children in some way. The Center has also become a popular “lab” for psychology and education experiments for the children, says Eggcrt. even for photography experiments. The Center is popular with married students and with single parents, who often have to juggle careers, school work and parenting, “especially around finals week, says Eggcrt. The program only accepts children of students and because of the increased demand, Eggcrt says the Center has a referral program to get children to other day care centers. But MSU’s program is still “by far the least expensive. Helping keep the center running smoothly is its friendly association with ASMSU. They've been very good to us financially. says Eggcrt. “We've had to raise our fees a few times, but without ASMSU we couldn't function.” University day care centers arc a relatively new idea and came about as older Americans began taking a renewed interest in college studies. The oldest university day care center in the state, at Missoula is only ten years old. while Eastern and Western Montana Colleges have started programs within the past year. Eggcrt says MSU can now help “woo potential older students back in school” with the center. The recent spate of child abuse cases that have come to light, particularly at day care centers around the country, has helped Eggcrt and staff to form their day care philosophy. 1 really don't think Montana has seen that kind of physical abuse, but I think the biggest problem is emotional abuse. At those day care centers, interaction with the parent is often discouraged and we try to encourage the parents to work with us. Helping in that interaction, says Eggcrt. are the Center’s annual events such as an Easter Egg hunt, a Halloween party and a Valentine's party. “Our philosophy is a positive discipline.
