Academics Means Hands-On At MSU Academics has taken on an entirely new perspective. At one time, academics referred to attending class, faithfully scribbling notes and conferring with professors. Learning has come a long way from the look and listen process which it once was. Ask most students today what academics means to them, and you'll receive answers that refer to “doing instead of “watching , or touching rather than “hearing about. Employment agencies are filled with job offers. Job descriptions sound great, and enthusiasm mounts, only to be toppled as the last line states something to the effect that “those without experience need not apply. Since one of the major goals of the University is to prepare students for participation in the “real World . MSU has been focussing more and more of its actions and attention towards the offering of practical ex- perience to its student body. This experience may be obtained by taking advantage of the many opportunities available. Opportunities which range from co-op programs where students get part-time jobs in their field of interest to “hands on experience (working with the computer, participating in research projects. etc.). Some current projects attest to the furthering of “first hand academics. lights, camera, action! On this very campus a star is born. A group of seniors enrolled in Film and Television were in charge of filmir 3 a T.V. show. Those in the Music De partment first handedly partook n the production of an opera. The following pages give an inside glimpse of several examples thct display how the University system s preparing students to partake in active roles in the “real world. These programs are representative of many other such activities at Montana State. (Photos by Vance except whe ? noted) 22

MSU Career Days Valuable Career Choices Provided Students undecided as to a career comprise a large part of the student body at Montana State. In order to help those career-less” students in making some sort of intelligent career choice, the second annual MSU Career Days” was presented April 10 11. Sponsored by the Associated Students of Montana State (ASMSU), Career Days consisted of over 70 companies setting up informal display booths in the Student Union Ballroom. Those companies ranged from Boeing and Hewlett-Packard to a self-employed gold prospector. Students were encouraged to circulate among the booths and talk to various company representatives and get important career questions answered. MSU Career Days was just one of the ways that ASMSU and the University Administration showed their concern for the employment of MSU graduates. On the following pages are some of the individual departments' efforts in that same area, centering around the need for hands-on experience. (Photos by Hickman) » 24
