A Good Idea Blossomed Into A Great Idea Somewhere along the line, someone had a good idea. Maybe it was the founding fathers of Montana State University (then known as the Agricultural College of the State of Montana ACSM): including such now familiar names as Story. Koch and Willson. Maybe it was one of the early college presidents Ryon, Reid. Hamilton. Atkinson. Strand. Maybe it was the first set of instructors, or the Board o Regents. Today we can only speculate as to where the “good idea” came from. But wherever the “good idea” had its beginnings, it has proven over the years to be a great idea. Putting an institute of higher learning in Bozeman not only benefitted the immediate locale of th Gallatin Valley, it benefitted the entire state. Montana students could gain a degree within the border:

 Montana State University had its roots On February 16. 1893. the Montana legislature passed an act creating Montana's first university, the Agricultural College of the State of Montana, in Bozeman. It was soon to be followed by the University of Montana, the School of Mines, and the Normal colleges to form the state university system. From the beginning. Montana State University, then ACSM. was to be different from its sister schools. The new institution was Montana’s land-grant college. Large land grants had been made available to each state by the Morrill Act of 1862 for the endowment, support, and maintenance of at least one college where the leading object shall be. without excluding other scientific and classical studies and including military tactics, to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts.”
