F oreword The Report to the Students” is fact. We have deviated from our normal editorial reporting routine in order to let the student decide for himself the good or bad of a particular subject. Therefore, we have not editorialized. We have only reported the facts in order that you may check them and formulate your own conclusions. Ldt Peace, if it ever exists, will not be based on the fear of war, but on the love of peace. It will not be the abstaining from an act, but the coming of a state of mind. In this sense the most insignificant writer can serve peace — where the most powerful tribunals can do nothing. Herman Wouk

For a single day what is now known as Montana State University was the entire university system of the state of Montana. Then on February 17, 1893, the University at Missoula was chartered and the Agricultural College of Montana at Bozeman no longer had that distinction. The college began instruction on April 17 starting a 10 week summer term. The first classes, held in the Academy Building on the main street of Bozeman, were soon shifted up to campus with the erection of the first buildings, the Experiment Station and Old Main, known as Montana Hall. Enrollment the first year was 139 — 51 in the business course, 38 in the preparatory department, 15 enrolled in applied science, and 12 in general studies. The early years of Montana State University were spent experiencing the growing pains of any new institution. Early students had a long walk through snow or mud to get to campus, and long hours of study in relatively undeveloped fields. But they also had a great deal of person-to-person participation in small organizations, nicely appointed social gatherings, and numerous pranks to keep) them amused. Stories are told of the cow who was found to have wandered up to the very top of Montana Hall by itself. Another time a cannon was discovered neatly assembled in the middle of the library. What evolved into Montana State University went through all of the trials and tribulations of any college or university — troubles with money appropriations, troubles with an adequate curricula, and troubles with the everyday functions of a school. For those who set up MSU, the day has come to sit back and survey what they have done. In the words of the Alma Mater . . . ’’W hen years have borne us far away. Memory shall keep today. 6
