Dean Brown Dean qff Stuohnts Situated in the Student Welfare Oflice, Dean Val Glynn serves as a counselor in his capacity as dean of students. He graduated from MSC in 1928 and re- ceived his master of education degree from Montana State University in 1941. Presently he acts as advisor to Fangs, Septemviri, and Phi Eta Sigma, fresh- man men's scholastic honorary. Combin- ing hard work with enthusiasm, he manages to fit into his duties the large job of finding housing for, as well as supervision of all men on campus. Dean of Women Since her arrival at MSC ten years ago, Dean Esther Brown has served in the position of dean of women. Working closely with Associated Women Stu- dents, she helps establish the rules to be followed by MSC coeds. She re- ceived her B.A. in 1930 from the Uni- versity of Washington, where she later earned her M.A. in 1932. Instrumental in the program of Women's Day, as well as in all activities which are rela- tive to women students, she offers a ready ear and a natural interest in all those duties which fall under the ad- ministration of her respective office. President Renne An educated man is one who knows how to produce more than he consumes. Elbert Hubbard in writing the above few words may have been making refer- ence to agricultural production or scientific and tech- nical production. But to us, the students of Montana State College, Elbert Hubbard was unknowingly writing a character sketch and biography of our presi- dent, Doctor Roland R. Renne. President Renne, a 1927 graduate of Rutgers Univer- sity, went on to receive his advanced degrees from the University of Wisconsin, honorary advanced de- grees from Rutgers, the University of the Phillipines and the National University of Asuncion in Paraguay. On July 1, 1944 Roland R. Renne became president of Montana State College. He entered his first year as chief administrator with 219 faculty members, 69 county extension agents, 5 branch stations, 41 fields in which he could issue bachelor's degrees, 18 Helds for masters' degrees and 1121 students. His first com- mencement saw 76 B.S. degrees and 1 M.S. degree granted. After 19 years of his administration we see there are now over 500 resident faculty members, 96 county extension agents and 7 branch stations. De- grees are offered in 28 undergraduate fields, 26 mas- ters iields and 12 doctorate areas. Of the 4778 stu- dents enrolled last year, 689 received B.S. degrees, 121 obtained their M.S. degrees and 9 individuals were awarded their doctorate degrees. We have seen the growth of a college and the hand of an able administrator guide this growth. President Renne has taken the agricultural and mechanical arts college of 19 years ago and molded it into a fine uni- versity with graduates in every walk of life through- out the United States. The true leadership of Dr. Renne has been evidenced countless times during the past years. Several times our state and nation have called upon him for his services, yet our college con- tinued to grow and move forward. Some of his other assignments included serving as a visiting professor A moment of quiet reflective thought in a busy life. Dtflltllllllll in Agricultural Economics, University of Chicago, a visiting pro- fessor of local government, Cornell University, State Price Oflicer, Montana Oflice of Price Administration, Chief, U.S. Technical and Economic Mission to the Phillipines, Chief, Agricultural Survey Mission to Peru, joint International Bank for Reconstruction - FAO, and Development Consultant, U.S. Operations Mission to Ethiopia. January of this year saw Dr. Renne take a one year leave of absence and accept a position in Washington, D.C. with the U.S. Depart- ment of Agriculture. Our students, our faculty and the people of Montana jealously wish that he were still here on campus and yet we all take pride in the fact that Dr. Renne, has once again been called upon to serve the people of his country. To Dr. Roland R. Renne, a man with the highest of ideals, to a man who sets goals and objectives that seem impossible today only to realize them tomorrow, to a man who never lets political pres- sures overbalance his own personal principles of education and his responsibilities to them, to a man who can command the respect of student, teacher and taxpayer, and to the man who is best able to answer our question, Quo Vadis?v, we dedicate this book. . . . , - my Duties extend beyond the ofiice. 21

Tim Babcock Governor and Board Chairman Board of Eolucation Providing a program to meet the needs of the student as well as the people of Montana, the Board of Education, composed of the State Board of Education and the Ex-officio regents of the University of Montana, works for the betterment of Montana State College. This board decides policies, limitations and pro- cedures to be followed by the college. Always keeping the progress and advance- ment of MSC in mind, these two boards, along with the administration, provide a program of instruction, extension and re- search. Delegation of special duties to the local Executive Board is made by the State Board of Education, and members have gen- eral supervision over all state units.
