Athletics and drama were very popular 1 among the ancient Greeks, magnincent amphitheaters and public buildings were designed and built in an effort to satisfy the spectators .... it few years ago oiiicials at Montana State College realized that they were faced with a similar situation. A large structure was needed to house many of the events of the rapidly growing school. To satisfy this need, worlc began on the Montana State College Fieldhouse in 1955. Since its completion in the fall of 1957 it has housed rodeos, concerts, stockshows, military drills, golf, track, and baslcetball. The Fieldhouse capacity is 15,000 'lor boxing or 12,000 when the semifportahle basketball floor is installed. lt is the largest clear-span timber structure of its type in the world. Two hundred fiftyfsix 1500 Watt lamps provide ample lighting for all activities and the building's sound system is second to none.
