Dean Roy watches over the artists, homemakers, and businessmen who compose this department. Odors of paint and food combine to represent an afternoon of labs in Herrick Hall. Coeds in white uniforms . . . hair nets . . . are probably the cause of the various food odors, good or burnt, they're learning through mistakes and encouragement. leans . . . paint speckled shirts . . . typify the industrious art majors who inhabit the basement and upper floors of Herrick Hall. ?.. ? . . . ring . . . the noise of typewriters indicate the future businessmen and women are hard at work in their SUB classrooms. Where are you most likely to see a freshman art student? Sitting on a stool in the barn drawing pigs and cows while the upperclassmen take in modem dance for life drawing. LijH u Peering from behind the surveyors' transits are the perspective civil engineers. Often the field to survey becomes cluttered with coeds and the work must be laid aside. Those students interested in electricity receive special training for work in industrial and community electrical projects. The combination of engineering and physics probably limits enrollment in this field, but the stout-hearted remain to fill positions in industry as designers, engineers, and research workers. The future teachers of mechanics . . . builders . . . and contractors are enrolled in the Industrial Arts Division of Engineering while the managing and production problems will be in the hands of the industrial engineers. These mechanical engineers to be devote their college study to research . . . . design . . . power . . . and machinery. Throwing pots is not a sign of temper . . . but a sign of ceramics skill which is not acquired easily as evidenced by the lopsided pots. This well equipped art department offers professional training in five different fields. Heading for the SUB, not for coffee, but for classes are the business students where they will master the adding machines . . . comptometers . . . typinq machines. Secretaries learn shorthand, typing, good English and office procedures . . . which include managing the office and boss. Food thermometers . . . gauges . . . gadgets . . . prerequisites to cooking after a degree in Home Economics. Subject to various comments as to the worth of being a Home Economist these girls prove themselves capable of not only cooking but conquering chemistry. MRS degrees . . . and professional degrees offer unlimited opportunities in this growing field. This division of Household and Applied Arts offers a practical foundation for specialized study in one of these three fields.
