Dr. Deane B. Swingle Dean of Science In the death of Deane B. Swingle January 18, 1944, we lost a distinguished scientist and eminent teacher and an excellent administrator. As a man, Dr. Swingle was loved, respected. and admired by students and faculty alike. His greatest satisfaction was derived from his association with students and in teaching, for he was above everything else a teacher. He believed in people and found the finest delights of his experience in developing and furthering the interests of others. Although he saw their imperfections he never slackened his efforts to help them to be more nearly the men and women they were capable of being. His work was therefore conceived to be an opportunity for a service that would assure a continuing influence. In this way developed the kindly, sympathetic, personal philosophy that so charmed his friends and acquaintances and laid the foundation for a true memorial—not in stone or steel, but in the hearts of those who knew him. 9 l (YYljmw uam It trill come again— Our marching song trill come again Simple as a hit tune— Deep as our mountains Strong as the people trho made it. Ruth Marie Holmes We know it is just as hard for the believer as for the non-believer to stand in the presence of death, but when He comes to us in that solemn hour, the listening ears of Faith hear the rustling of the Angel's wings and there is something in the heart and something about us that keeps this from being the last act or the last thing that happened in life3 I would ask you to remember that Miss Holmes, herself, prepared us by her way of living, in her ideals, in her ever striving for perfection and in her way of teaching—she prepared us to think in terms of continuing, that things go on and on. It was a desire for perfection and for things to be well done that her students know her best. The art of living is infinitely more difficult than the art of teaching, but when the art of teaching is employed in making or teaching students to realize the beauty and the fullness of life, as did Miss Holmes in her teaching, her instruction. her guidance and the helpfulness with which she handled the affairs of her students, then we have come not only to the place where the art of living is a marvelous thing, but we have lifted the art of teaching unto its highest level. (From memorial address given by Dr. H. G. Klemme.) No words can begin to encompass the grief and loss suffered at the passing of a loved one. The death, late last fall, of Professor j R. T. Challendor leaves the writer particularly j at a loss. To say that Montana State has lost a figure and educator irreplaceable, a man loved by all who knew him or of him, is not enough. Perhaps the greatest tribute to Professor Challender is the keen loss felt by so many students and friends. Stories of his classroom ambidexterity instilled a healthy respect in underclassmen long before they had the good fortune to become pupils of the “Big Lefthander.” Ije and his students were friends.
