A WORD FROM THE CHANCELLOR When Dr. Samuel Wesley Stratton was inaugurated President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he pointed out that the progress of the world had been determined by the leadership developed and followed in every progressive age. This important truth expressed by Dr. Stratton has particular significance in the industrial development of Montana. It is generally conceded that this State has three enormous empires, each possessed of millions of acres located within a latitude and longitude where weather conditions are favorable for intensive industrial development. There have been many scientific discussions of the soil, the climate, the mineral resources and the great forest reserves within the boundaries of the Treasure State. Long ago we came to realize that each of these three kingdoms, agriculture, livestock, mineral and forest potentialities combined, challenged the kindly spirits of frontiersmen and their descendants. Long ago thoughtful people dreamed great dreams about these riches of the West. Long ago men realized that immeasurable material wealth might be gained, rather easily in some cases, if one were to make “a heap of all his winnings” and stake them confidently on certain of the multiple ventures offered to the pioneers. That particular period of adventure is past. Today, Montana’s industrial development presents an entirely different aspect and it demands an entirely different procedure than that recorded in the industrial history of sixty years ago. The opening of the second quarter of the Twentieth Century gives ever-increasing evidence that scientific knowledge, elimination of wastes, wise conservation of resources and the solution of the problems associated with transportation, marketing, and surplus crops will be required of the adequately trained leaders. Of what particular value is it to the citizens of Montana if we develop an Aladdin-like wealth, and fail to train and choose proper leaders in our three divisions of government,—legislative, judicial and executive? Government not only gives protection to life and property, but also in the last analysis, it gives liberty and freedom to the people. Liberty and freedom are essential to the most sought for objective in all human experience—the objective of intelligent contentment and happiness. This, then is the message to the students of Montana State College: The world needs now, as always, here as everywhere, adequately trained leaders who have developed moral judgment, a sense of responsibility to society and a wholly reliable character. In the language of Knighthood of Old, but expressed to the Knighthood of Youth, Society commands you to go forth and capitalize your training, your virtue and your inheritance for the best development of Montana’s industrial, social and civic life. Montana ranis first among the States in percentage of spring wheat production, grading number one.
