her resources make her deserving of a much higher place in the industrial life of the nation. For that greater development there is needed a liberal application of brains and perspiration,— brains applied to the development of economic processes for using our resources, and perspiration to bring them into commercial successes. Big promotion schemes that talk in terms of millions of capital are still out of place in Montana. The day of small beginnings is still with us. Success lies most prominently in the way of him who is content to start in a small way and to struggle onward to success. The technical graduate of today has before him the opportunity to become the industrial leader in the Montana of tomorrow. Educational Facilities Facilities for higher education are generously provided in Montana. The state supports four higher educational institutions. These are: The State College at Bozeman, which offers agriculture, engineering, home science, and applied science; the State University at Missoula, which teaches arts, law, journalism, and allied subjects; the State School of Mines at Butte, which provides an education in mining engineering, and the State Normal College at Dillon, which offers training for teachers. The increasing-in cl ust rial development of Montan a not only bi ings its in- Larjte Corn Sh0cks ln Montana crease in population and increased wealth but it means greater home markets for the products of the mine and the forest, and home markets for agriculture. Extensive agricultural development, with improved methods and labor-saving machinery has caused a great over-production of farm products, the values of which are thus fixed by foreign markets, less the transportation charges to such markets. Such an agriculture can be but a reflection of conditions in Argentine, in Australia, and in Russia and other overproducing countries. Greater industry brings to agriculture home markets for the more valuable products, more intensive farming with more diversification, higher land values with a lightening of the tax burden, and better schools and better social life resulting from a denser population. The four institutions above mentioned have recently expended more than three million dollars in new buildings and additional equipment. This expenditure, in addition to the large sums which Yards. In point of general state service, the organization in the State of Montana is modern and effective. There is a State Department of Agriculture which deals with the enforcement of all agricultural legislation. As a part of Montana State College, there is an agricultural extension service, employing over sixty persons who work in the counties of the state. This organization concerns itself with agricultural production and marketing problems, and the general question of home making and community life. The State of Montana has given careful thought to the upbuilding of a community life that is attractive, so that settlers may find an established community situation, eliminating most of the difficulties which formerly accompanied settlement in a new farm region.
