1968 RIMROCK Eastern Montana College Billings, Montana 40th Edition £ v EASTERN MONTANA 6 COLLEGE After 40 years. Fastern Montana College emerges with its face to the future having grown from 120 students in the fall of 1928 to 3.100 students in the fall of 1968. But what is Kastern Montana College? It is you the student. Your college life is an active one made up of many interesting phases. There have always been homecomings, foot-hall games, dances, classes, and finals and there probably always will be. But below the surface, each year has a personality and character all of its own. We have tried to capture some of this character in our 1968 Himrock. Remember as you turn the pages that the events are symbolic. Some Kastem Student was there and it could have been you. 1968 Rimrock Staff Index Fall activities............14 s p o fts...... ................. 4 5 underclassmen........55 student leaders ....96 organizations....103 Winter activities.......134 sports...........153 academics........167 Spring activities.......198 sports...........219 seniors..........231 7 Between high-rises closing in on every side one gold-tipped mountain. Bollock 15 Eastern celebrates ”40 Years of Happening” Many things have changed in the forty years of happening since the beginning of Eastern Montana State Normal School in 1928, hut none so dramatic as the beginning of a centralized campus in 1936. The dream expressed in the foreward of the first Rimrock annua) we shall find ourselves in the protection of that work of nature, the Rim-rocks came true when the cam- pus was moved front downtown Billings to McMullen Hall, the first campus building. Today that dream is coming true with the construction ol the new library building and the future construction of a high-rise classroom building. The dream will never end here or anywhere— as long as man continues his search for better education. L. B. McMullen, president of Eastern Montana Normal School. Fall Sports 'Jackets plagued by injuries The 1967 football season was the year of the bad break for the Eastern Montana College grid-men. The Yellowjackets were crippled by 13 injuries as a quest for a fourth straight Frontier Conference championship crumbled at the hands of the Western Montana College Bulldogs. 32-6. The 'Jackets were led by all-conference quarterback Paul Champlin whose arm was the main instrument in EMC’s 2.191 total passing yards. New Jersey scatback Bill Wondolowski paced the 'Jackets on the ground with 12 touchdowns and 72 points on the year. Kandy Ecker was second in scoring with 10 TD's and 60 points for the season. Billings' Kenzy Cushing completed the top three scoring ladder finishing with 7 touchdowns and 42 points in all. The Yellowjackets ended loop action in second place behind the Bulldogs of Western with a 4-1-0 record. The title was Western's first since 1963. Last year we had only one player out with an injury. said Head Football Coach Bob Lee. This year 13 players suffered injuries and our freshmen really saved us. Champlin played on a semi-sprained ankle in the decisive game against Western late in the season. EMC had 1,085 net yards rushing to an opponent’s 749 net yards. The 'Jackets scored 274 points on the year to 121 scored against them. 46 Football Statistics TEAM TOTALS Total first downs Rushing Passing Penalties No. of Plays Rushing Yards Rushing Yards lost Net Yards Rushing Passes Att. Judo and Karate For the first time at E.M.C. the weaker students were able to defend themselves the gentle way. as judo and karate became well known on campus. Taught by Kyung Ho Min. approximately 180 students a quarter were introduced to the techniques of judo and karate in classes, ami even more in the newly organized Judo and Karate Club. Mr. Min says that patience is the most important factor a student must possess when learning the sports, and that many of the students give up without trying the whole time. Those who do try. however, may acquire a skill that will he useful for the rest of their lives. Eastern students are very fortunate to have this type of program. Cross Country Champs A successful season was capped by an easy win of the Frontier Conference Championship this year for the Eastern Montana College cross country team. The Yellowjacket harriers, undefeated in loop play, scored 20 points to easily win the frontier crown in the last meet of the season for 1967. Following Eastern was Western Montana College with 52 points and rival Rocky Mountain College with 53 points. Members of the title-winning squad included Jim Downs. Wayne Eggum. Bill Ehresman. Ray Iceland. Rick Klaboe. Jim Ashcraft and Don Saunders. In what was to be an all-Montana College cross country championship in Missoula, the University of Montana harriers defeated the EMC squad. 15-48. The two schools were the only ones represented at the proposed state championship. Underclassmen Adam. Lellian I -2 Adams. Barbara G—1 Adams. Douglas P—2 Adams. Patricia I.—2 Adams. Both are open to Sophomores whose scholarship and leadership has been proven during their freshman year. Spurs is a one year women's organization while IK's is a three year men’s organization. Both tap and initiate new members in the spring. Spurs and IK's play an important role of leadership in all campus and community projects which require student help. Some of the projects undertaken by the Spurs include ushering at campus functions, serving on the courtesy crew during freshman orientation, selling mums at Homecoming, and being sold as slaves at the annual Spur Slave Sale. The meetings are held once a week and close with the Spur friendship circle. The IK’s usher at Audobon Films and other campus events, help at registration and sell beanies at freshman orientation, sell tickets at games, and help those students who need assistance in getting around campus in wheel chairs. Each year a girl is chosen to represent the group in the Miss EMC Pageant and the national convention pageant. This year's IK Duchess was Carol Waggoner. The Retort, affectionately called the Retard by some, was published every Friday with one special election issue. Dale was succeeded by Kick Smith spring quarter. Perhaps the most elaborate issue printed was the spring fashion issue. A highly organized staff and a group of models set out at 4:00 one Sunday morning to catch the sunrise on the rims. The group packed in tents and supplies, as well as. clothing from downtown stores by a human chain (pictured below left). Photographers shot hundreds of feet of film and came out with professional-looking prints for the issue. Mr. Richard F. The foreword from the 1928 annual written by the editor. Catherine Lux. expressed the philosophy of the Rimrock staff that year. She wrote, “It has been our great pleasure to place between the covers of this book, days hung with memories of the first year of the E.M.N.S. The streets of Hillings have been our campus; but when our dreams are at last fulfilled we shall find ourselves in the protection of that great work of nature. The Rimrock. And so we have named our book. Our best efforts have been put forth to make it stand above all other activities as the rimrocks stand above the valley.” The 1928 annual was the beginning of a lasting tradition. The 1968 annual staff continued to collect pictures and memories of the year as a living record of Eastern Montana College. Marla Connor. Editor. Jan Rierson. Associate Editor Pam Spencer.
