We hope it was as entertaining as that of the young lady above. Diana Frost. Left: Michael F. Anderson. You were feted in a manner typical of Montana, Billings, and EM C. Carol L. Raisland seems to appreciate the hospitality. You were entertained with a flourish of style, color, and grace by Barbara J. Allan, Doretta J. Wagner, and Marjorie K. Dunbar. • 10 You expressed—or at least felt—some concern as Dr. Schaffer expertly slid a needle beneath the skin of your left arm. Phyllis W. Fair seems especially interested in the course of I)r. Schaffer’s needle—nurse material? Hands—holding, taking, giving, and signing paper— were part of the confusion during your registration. The two ladies to the left and Barbara L. Norville examine some of that paper. 11 During Activities Night you were presented the kaleidoscope of activities available at E M C. Mr. Walter Graf seems to have interested Gloria K. Thirlwell—in the Deutsch. You danced in your highly individual styles—but usually with a partner. Left Mr. Vincent L. Tomassi. By the end of Orientation Week, you seem to have found EMC. entertainment most enjoyable. To the right Mr. Richard A. Strecker and Miss Diane M. Sutton attempt to pass an orange during Fun Night. 12 S and then it’s . . . HOMECOMING What we think the West was: the smiling saloon girl with leg and garter exposed, the Western woman— homely but wholesome, the gunman demonstrating his draw, the grinning but calculating poker players, the occassional top-hatted gentleman, the moustached cava-lero, the pretty Indian maiden, and the fierce Indian chiefs (Those above, though, seem strangely tranquil.) The Amusement. . Deputy David E. Nelson and Sheriff Jerry Mueller detect a villain. . . . However. Loose Lip. Walter Graf, soon returns to his smiling saloon girl and verbose bottle. TRADITIONS DAY Traditions Day this year captured the spirit of Eastern’s Western Frontier. It captured unrestrained competition in the bicycle races and the tug-o-war, and it captured pride in the shining of the victory bell. Elaine Purcell adds to the ‘glow’—the aspiration—of the victory bell. The Preface Katoya’s first place float to begin the ritual which adorns the fierceness of coming competition . . . With a faith that could only be expected on the Girls’ Dorm second place float, Claudia J. Erickson and Susan S. Hawke pan for gold in water from the Billings water system. IK’s third place float has a theme we hope is true in a broader sense than that of Homecoming. □UT m PANS t 16 I I Miss Nicole Eveland adds attractive enthusiasm to the Homecoming Parade. ROGER SMITH Roger Smith of “77 Sunset Strip” (the old version) struck the skilled performer's pose both as an entertainer during Homecoming and as a participant in the Homecoming parade. INGERLISE DE BLANCK Refined is the beauty of Miss Ingerlise de Blanck— refined, but sincere—as she is crowned Homecoming Queen at the Mystery Mixer. Ingerlise de Blanck, Jacqui Cooper, Susan McQuillian and Pam White help push the fervor toward its peak before the night pivots into the fol-1 lowing day of competition. I 18 Ingcrlise de Blanck in game ceremonies with EMC’s Loren L. Soft and James C. Barrus perhaps represents the point of interaction between the events of Homecoming and the actual Homecoming game. Perhaps, at this point, the fervor silently reaches its peak. The Consummation .. . The competition also reaches its peak—but with more turbulence than any pre-game ceremony. 19 ■ SUSAN A. McQUILLEN, Attendant CAROL A. DOYLE, Attendant JACQUELYN T. COOPER. Attendant PAMELA J. WHITE, Attendant Coffee and Chatter Irvin 0. McLaughlin, Carlene G Ames, Dr. James II. Platt and Ruth A. d’Autremont show that drinking coffee and chatting are done best simultaneously. I 22 President’s Reception The faculty and students met at events such as Coffee and Chatter and the President’s Reception, in the halls and on the sidewalks, and in the classroom—while working toward a common goal, the attainment and skillful use of knowledge. Tanya L. Ronga meets President Steele and Mrs. Steele at the President’s Reception. TEACHER AND STUDENT Conversation would be flavorless indeed without gestures. (Gesturing are James J. Werner and Professor Elmer Andersen.) A professor is not only an adviser but also an advocate seeking acceptance of his logic and proposals. (Above: Doctor Albert Hopkins and Richard A. Strecker.) Professor Richard W Peterson supervises while Kenneth D. Kolski, Robert N. Parnell, and James E. Higginbotham work with some of the plumbing of physics. THE DORMS i Kenneth H. Henry, William R. Walker, Patrick D. Loughney, and Paul P. Fasting competed in a Cisel Hall chess match. Gary D. Holmes practiced some dorm nonsense with Apsaruke Hall’s broken door. Room-mate trouble? Darrel L. La-Lanne studies on Apsaruke Hall’s stairway. t 24 Silhouettes and evening convey a quiet and thoughtful mood as Marilyn K. Foss and Patricia A. Heller view Billings and the EMC campus from Rimrock Hall. Second place costume winner, Arvilla L. Boc; first place winner, Sally K. Sheperd, and another second place winner, Mary Lou E. Simonis “accuse” each other of having the best costume at Rimrock Hall’s Halloween party. ■'I 25 THE STUDENT UNION Jack L. Young carefully aligns a billiards shot in Warren C. Norden. Student Union Director, and the Student Union activity area. Carlenc G. Ames help celebrate the Student Union building’s second birthday with a piece of the birthday cake. 1 The Student Union dining area was used for the Sweetheart Ball and other events. The Student Union provided recreational facilities such as the activities area ping pong tables and the music listening rooms, the dining and lounge areas for arranged events and everyday use, and a polling place for student elections. 26 Democracy must be practiced to be understood, and it must be understood if it is to survive. For this reason EMC students are given the opportunity to participate in the processes of student government by voting and by running for office. Lon M. Smith examines election returns in the school newspaper. Student Elections minimi! Daniel R. Kcrcher demonstrates the use of the voting machine to Janet A. Russell. As the Martin Denny group provided the cadence, the Martin Denny dancer danced the more conservative Hawaiian Hula. 34 Maestro Luboff conducts the choir in the Physical Education Building. Norman Luboff Calvin Wheelock, public relations director, and Dr. Van Valkenburg, chairman of Eastern’s humanities division, talk with Norman Luboff before his performance. 35 Fred Waring The Fred Waring concert presented popular, jazz, classical, and semi-classical music. Arrangements varied from orchestral and choral to solo. 36 Soulina Stravinsky Soulina Stravinsky, concert pianist, composer and university professor gave a two hour concert in Humanities Hall. He played French, Russian, and German compositions. 37 The Swing-A-Longs from Billings West High School performed during a Coke “N” Combo. The Jazz Concert The Billings Professional Musicians Association and EMC presented the second annual Jazz Concert. The seventeen piece group performed in various jazz styles. FROM ON CAMPUS James P. Carney, leading actor; Claud A. Heller, and Kenneth A. Clock show the skillful expression found in “The Fantasticks.” THE REHEARSAL Lynda B. Powell, Faith N. Peery, Claude A. Heller, and Patricia A. Watkins sharpen their performances for “The Fantasticks.” THE PERFORMANCE 'The Fantasticks’ 39 'Death of a Leading actor Bob Canetta and Kenneth A. Clock in one of the situations which were seen in the winter quarter dramatic presentation. Salesman’ The Winter Drama Production “The Death of a Salesman” was staged with the audience sitting on three sides of the actors. Success was evidenced by capacity crowds for all three performances. Bob Canetta, Murray A. Hudson. Patricia A Watkins, and Kenneth A. Clock in one of the many conflicts represented in the play. 40 Earl A. Keffer, Fredric W. Moses, George D. Losee, and Del Neil Poling created “suspense” at a Reader’s Theater performance. Speech A speaker not only talks but also is talked to. His words create a mood in which there are a million echoes, and each echo talks with strength or fear. Debaters Raymie E. McKerrow and Robert J. Herbolich tested foreign competition, J. K. Toulmin and Michael Howard from Cambridge. 41 The Browsing Library Turkey Dinner” by John Pearson. Traditional and modern art from on and off campus was exhibited in our browsing library. The works ranged frcm Ben Steele’s intense recollection of the Philippines’ death march to the unusual works below. Gary D. Baker shows his appreciation of modern art as he inspects The Shoe by John Pearson. 42 Arthur Bennett (Right) and George T. Gountanis perform at one of the Hootenannies held each Sunday in the Student Union Ballroom. 'Blowing in the Wind’ Hootenanny 43 DANCES, NONSENSE AND QUEENS While the others danced cheek-to-cheek Walter Graf held Dixine LaSeur at arms-length and hummed “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” Halloween’s Ball I dreamed 1 wore my Maidcnform . . . Sadie Hawkins Dance Struck with Sadie Hawkins fever or just startled—but startled by what? (Right: Karen Cornelius and Gary D. Holmes.) Robert Pasquarello showed the typical male reaction to Sadie Hawkins fever — confused but delighted. The symptoms of Sadie Hawkins fever varied from a mild heart flutter to arm waving and foot stomping. (Left: Marjorie K. Dunbar.) 45 Ellen I. Markus and Robert A. Fredrickson seemed to dance as if dancing was the reason for dancing. Dancing—EMC style Patricia A. Engel and her date danced to catch an exciting mood. Lawrence E. Linnen and his date danced to catch the soft flow of the music. - Swee theart O ueen £audio D . .« Miss Hastern Co’iule.e. Cfonei n INTO THE SUMMER Registration and commencement also represent another series of events: the growth of EMC. EMC has grown from a college without a campus with an enrollment of 145 in 1927 to a college with buildings ranging from a little red one to large brick ones with an enrollment of 1,916 in 1964. A cycle of events is nearly complete as we near the end of one school year, but approach the beginning of another. This page represents the completion and initiation of that cycle, the commencement (to the left) and registration (below). But before the cycle renews itself, we shall glance back to the events of last summer, which prefaced this school year and which might have indicated what was to follow. 49 The cycle that is the school year coincides with the cycle of the seasons. During the spring and summer, food —its color, texture, shape, aroma, and flavor—seems prevalent. McMullen Hall mirrored by the BL I canal seems to very appropriately introduce summer, and summer seems to very appropriately introduce picnics. Helen M. Matovich seems to anticipate the taste of the salad at the Graduation Dinner. 50 They dressed for their performance with the sureness of motion and diciplined excitement of every skilled performer. These two dancers represent well the Silver Spurs, a Spokane high school dancing group; and the Silver Spurs represent well summer entertainment at EMC. Then they performed a ritual of motion that seemed but a part of the evening darkness. They determined the mood as the distance across which they were seen became not an obstacle to — but a medium for — communication. 51 During the past summer the road to the tainly represent the growth and ambition of airport was improved, the tunnel was con- Billings and EMC. The Spurs are an honorary sophomore woman’s group, practicing the qualities of sacrifice, patriotism, understanding, and responsibility. 54 ii I TERCOLLEGIAI I KMIGEITS FIRST ROW: G. STEELE, President President’s Message Our national and state system of education is based on opportunity—the idea that every student should go as far as he is able, and should develop his abilities to the fullest. Historically, progress has been achieved only by departure from conformity, by the trial and gradual acceptance of new practices and ideas proven through experience. During your period of study at Eastern you have been encouraged to think creatively, to plan constructively. and to become personally responsible for your particular achievement in the future. You have been exposed to principles and ideas derived from differing economic, religious, and ethnic backgrounds, and given the freedom necessary to allow you to develop an awareness, understanding and appreciation for each. Thus, your experience at Eastern provides not only training for your future vocational aspirations, but also a vital proving ground for development of attitudes and interests that will enable you to make a definite contribution to a society of many cultures. Mrs. Betty 112 America’s free enterprise system, with its twin stimulants of incentive and competition. has produced an abundant and satisfying life for its citizens. So. it becomes the responsibility of every American to understand the workings of a system which has resulted in the greatest good for the greatest number. There are those who for one reason or another want to alter this way of life. To successfully defend this dynamic American economic system and its dependence upon free competition and private initiative requires the best thinking of an informed citizenry. Intelligent defense, the most effective, begins with the education received in our schools. It is in the schools that the understanding of our American Heritage, of which free enterprise is a part, is formed. 7 tt covtd z ll’hich Contributes through Scholarship, Research and Other Means to liducation 178 Curiy.
