The 1963 Rimrock Eastern Lights Eastern Montana College Billings, Montana Volume Thirty-five Degree Clash Features 1962-63 Year The 1962-63 school year saw Eastern Montana College waging a battle for a liberal arts degree, and for a small portion of the year, a battle for survival in status. In October, President Herbert L. Steele presented to the Montana State Board of Regents, EMC’s proposal for a liberal arts degree. At that time, the Master Plan report had been received for study by the board, and feelings were very high for and against the degree. The Master Plan stated that Montana State University and Montana State College would be the only multi-purpose units for the 1963-64 school year, and probably over a future period of ten years. This, of course, is all subject to change on a yearly basis. President Steele told the Regents that no new courses would have to be added if the degree was granted, nor would there have to be any new professors hired, as Eastern Montana College has'the faculty and the facilities for granting the degree. Except for library expansion, needed regardless, a liberal arts degree would cost very little for Eastern. The major battle against the degree, waged mainly by the Western part of the state, was based on an inadequate library and inadequate funds to give Eastern the right to grant the degree. President Steele showed that the degree would cost Eastern very little money, if any, except for the library, so the argument of inadequate funds seemed to have little basis. To try and solve the dispute, Governor Tim Babcock chose a special study committee to meet on Eastern’s campus and report upon the feasability of the degree. The committee, chaired by John E. Tenge of Billings, met on February 1 and 2 at Eastern. During its stay on campus, the committee heard a report by Russ Hart, prominent Billings business man, who stated that the national trend was for schools such as Eastern to be able to grant a liberal arts degree. The committee also heard a report by Jay R. Marston, Student Legislature President, and David E. Nelson, Student Legislature Business Manager, on a student survey the legislature conducted. Senate Bill 17 (the “two-headed monster” bill), which stated that Eastern would come under Montana State University, caused the biggest controversy of the year, however. The bill, introduced by William G. Groff, passed easily in the Senate. There was a chance for it to pass in the House of Representatives after such an easy ride in the Senate. In a mass •‘demonstration against the bill, Eastern students and faculty made resolutions, wired congressmen and did everything possible to defeat the bill. The bill, which would have hurt Eastern’s status, was defeated easily in the House. The battle for the degree kept on throughout the year. Governor Babcock said he thought that Eastern would have the degree in two years. However, the general opinion was that Eastern probably would not be awarded the degree until later. There were many other issues in the school years 1962-63, but none so important as liberal arts. Acquisition of the degree involved education, and education is of great concern to America and Montana. Eastern throughout the years has given its students a wonderful education. But recent studies have shown that today’s student needs much more than just an education. His education today must be broad and complete. Eastern desires to light the way for its students, giving them the needed learning the best way it knows how. The students also want to learn the best way there is, and they appreciate the opportunity for a better education. The Rimrock is sure that the state of Montana desires the same thing for its youth. We are sure that Eastern will obtain a liberal arts degree in the near future, for it is needed and would be of great value. Not only will the Montana student benefit, but the state of Montana as well as its citizens will acquire more than they could ever realize. Pete Adams, The Retort cartoonist, again in 1962-63 gave life to the school and the paper with his witty and “true-to-life” cartoons, “Higher Education.” Shown on the opposite page is one of his cartoons pertaining to the liberal arts degree issue. IE Education Building Relaxing in the Kimrock Hall Dormitory (opposite page) are Patricia A. Vollstedt, Jacquelyn T. Cooper, Gayle P. Mawhinney, and Kathleen K. Felska. 4 — tip ?' From the sciences to the humanities, Eastern offers a wide range of courses for the prospective teacher as well as for the student who is planning his major in a field other than education. With a liberal arts degree possible in the near future. Eastern is expanding at a rapid, but solid, pace. The curriculum expands each year and gives the student the opportunity to enrich his wealth of knowledge and experience. This section depicts the academic Eastern, the Eastern we tend to take for granted, but the most important aspect of any college. Larry L. Ifarman and Herman Krum examine a cray- the first time that Eastern had offered a biology labo- fish in an anatomy class. The 1962-63 school year was ratory for its students. Kay L. Brooks demonstrates oxygen preparation in a beginning chemistry class. Laboratories Useful Tools in Learning David M. Leinwand and Doris A. Sigmundstad examine the parts of a frog in physiology and anatomy. Spoken and Printed Language j Francis Sage and Lana Speelmon use the Foreign Language Laboratory in the Humanities Building. Howard L. Pederson, editor; Darlene L. Praast, proof- school newspaper. The Retort, at the print shop on reader, and Richard G. Frohnen, adviser, make up the Thursday afternoon. Sonja M. Synness, Jane L. House (standing), and Kathryn Adolph participate in an interpretive dance class. Leslie J. Kraft, off-hand, Glen E. Tusler, kneeling, and Robert D. Dige, prone, practice in riflery class. i 13 Students in the radio and television class get ready to broadcast over station KEMC. Barbara Peterson and Elizabeth Kaufmann do the final phase of a woodcut in graphics class. 14 Alvin L. Gerstenberger is shown doing a water-color in an elementary painting class. Application and Results Students in the teaching curriculum at Eastern Montana College have a chance to apply their academic learning by student teaching. Student teacher Shirley A. Minear gives Susan L. Wash a reading lesson at the Eastern Elementary School. Joan M. Driscoll, Marsha J. Wasley, and of all curriculums a wide choice of books Edward B. Also the committee planned Traditions Day, a fashion show, and the halftime at the football game. All in all, the committee did a wonderful job, and made Homecoming Week very successful. II Physical Education Eastern’s educational program includes physical education activities to provide sound bodies for sound minds. The physical education activities inspire non-physical education majors, as well as those who are majoring in that field. Tumbling exhibitions were held frequently around the campus. Mrs. Edith Jones instructs a Social Dance Class. This class has proved to be one of the most popular physical education activities. 158 Activities Miss Mary L Weber, physical education instructor, teaches one of her many swimming classes. Among the other physical education activities conducted throughout the school year, were Girls’ Varsity Basketball, Intramural Basketball and Weightlifting. 159 Intramural football was played often during Fall quarter. The games very often proved to be as tough as varsity contests. Center Lanes was the scene for the many bowling classes offered during the school year. Bowling is America’s largest sport, Dr. Harold S. Alterowitz coaches Marcia Johnson during “Camp Fitness which took place during the summer, 1962. and class attendance at Eastern is just an other confirmation. The new Physical Education Building made three courts at the same time. There was it possible for students to play volleyball on usually plenty of action. Physical Education instructor Frank Hailand performed with the Gymnastics Team during halftime at some basketball games. 161 1963 TRACK TEAM—BACK ROW: Kenneth V. Finney, David R. Lewis clears the bar successfully in the high jump. Richard N. Case, Raymond J. Zaccone, Charles L. Beck, and James Warner work out to develop their various track skills. . 163 Spring football was introduced for the first time in Eastern Montana College’s history, during Spring Quarter. Head coach Kenneth Karr returned from Illinois, where he was studying towards his Ph.I) in physical education, to administer the program. The program emphasized the development of offensive and defensive skills and techniques, and gave the ’Jackets the opportunity to work together before next year’s football season. 164 Frank Hailand, gymnastics coach, worked on developing the skills of Don MacCarter. Don and his brother Doug both showed great talent in the gymnastics field. What the most popular sport is around Eastern is hard to tell, but the trampoline rated very high among coeds. On the other hand, the handball courts seem to be always occupied by the male students. 1963 BASEBALL YELLOWJACK ETS BACK ROW: Harry (Mike) Harkins, coach; Gary L. Brenden, Richard W. John and Jim Polich (or is it Jim and John?) were the catcher-pitcher twins that confused Eastern opponents all season. Baseball 167 II FACULTY AND STAFF II DR. H. L. STEELE, President Eastern Provides Common Ground; Faculty, Students Stand Together Similarities of interest, which grow on a college campus within faculty and student body alike, are the result of differing cultures having freedom to meet and intermingle. The development of common interests suggests that the strongest need among human beings, whatever their race, creed, or nationality, is to find a common ground—a ground on which to stand, not against one another, but with one another. Eastern’s campus is such a common ground, where faculty and student body stand together, where subject fields and activities are not pitted against each other, but rather cooperate, each to strengthen the other. The degree to which this is achieved is reflected in that amorphous state of feeling known as “campus esprit de corps.” Your share in the development of common cooperating interests is your contribution to the further advancement of Eastern’s school spirit. 170 H.
