Response Rising to the challenge. Eastern Montana College is assuming its increased responsibility with the advent of a well-balanced curriculum, the completion of modern collegiate facilities, and an abundance of ambitious faculty and students. Although Eastern is known primarily as a teachers college, future engineers, doctors, and other preprofessional people are acquiring the rudiments of their chosen professions as well. Growing right along with the curriculum and the campus is the impressive group of faculty members. More and more top quality professors and instructors are being drawn to Eastern Montana College every year. The most noticeable facet of this new look on campus is the building boom. Montana's most modern Physical Education Building now sits majestically beneath the towering rims of the city. The latest look at EMC is a soaring student skyscraper, Rimrock Hall, which is rapidly becoming the hub of collegiate activity. These things tell only a part of the Eastern story. . . . .The real pulse of this progress is in the expanding student body itself. Enrollment has jumped more than 19% this year over last and the drop-out rate has declined. Teachers now find more students in more classes. . .all seemingly seeking sources of intellectual stimulation to meet this challenge of the future.

Challenge A question mark on every face.... an intense desire to learn the why and ways of life burns deep in these children. These future scientists, educators and engineers pose a problem to the nation as a whole and have created a challenge for the educators of this country. Eastern President Herbert L. Steele says that population forecasts indicate an increased demand on the higher education facilities of Montana in the very near future. The challenge of guiding these children falls heavily on the shoulders of the state's educators. As Montana's largest teacher education center, EMC accepts a lion's share of providing qualified teachers for the secondary and elementary systems of this state. According to Miss Harriet Miller, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Montana needs another classroom and another teacher every two days, week-in and week-out, to meet the Treasure State's potential education gtowth. We, as students today and teachers tomorrow, must prepare ourselves to lead the way and instill knowledge, confidence, and leadership in Montana's future citizens.

Faculty; Students Today's student is more demanding. . .Today's professor must be more providing. The days of house-painting summers for teachers are over. Educators who formerly enjoyed lengthy sunshine sojourns now find this time fiLied as students themselves. Others broaden their intellectual horizons with educational excursions or extensive reading programs. The acquisition of this knowledge soon benefits the students too, as their instructors and professors pass it right on down to the newest freshman. This new breed of professor spearheads a campus curriculum that is graduating some of the nation's top students. Eastern is slowly shedding the title of teachers college as more and more courses are added and more and more professional fields are opened. Already, future doctors, engineers, and other pre-professional people are receiving the basics of their respective professions. This additional zeal, coupled with a growing, realistic curriculum, is both meeting and beating our educational challenge.
