As Billings builds, Eastern Expands! These are more than just words; They paint the picture of Eastern Montana College and the Magic City growing hand in hand. You'll find this story Ln The 1962 Him rock, dedicated to our Alma Mater. % 3 Challenge A question mark on every face.... an intense desire to learn the why and ways of life burns deep in these children. These future scientists, educators and engineers pose a problem to the nation as a whole and have created a challenge for the educators of this country. Eastern President Herbert L. Steele says that population forecasts indicate an increased demand on the higher education facilities of Montana in the very near future. The challenge of guiding these children falls heavily on the shoulders of the state's educators. As Montana's largest teacher education center, EMC accepts a lion's share of providing qualified teachers for the secondary and elementary systems of this state. According to Miss Harriet Miller, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Montana needs another classroom and another teacher every two days, week-in and week-out, to meet the Treasure State's potential education gtowth. We, as students today and teachers tomorrow, must prepare ourselves to lead the way and instill knowledge, confidence, and leadership in Montana's future citizens. Response Rising to the challenge. Eastern Montana College is assuming its increased responsibility with the advent of a well-balanced curriculum, the completion of modern collegiate facilities, and an abundance of ambitious faculty and students. Although Eastern is known primarily as a teachers college, future engineers, doctors, and other preprofessional people are acquiring the rudiments of their chosen professions as well. Growing right along with the curriculum and the campus is the impressive group of faculty members. More and more top quality professors and instructors are being drawn to Eastern Montana College every year. The most noticeable facet of this new look on campus is the building boom. Montana's most modern Physical Education Building now sits majestically beneath the towering rims of the city. The latest look at EMC is a soaring student skyscraper, Rimrock Hall, which is rapidly becoming the hub of collegiate activity. These things tell only a part of the Eastern story. . . . .The real pulse of this progress is in the expanding student body itself. Enrollment has jumped more than 19% this year over last and the drop-out rate has declined. Teachers now find more students in more classes. . .all seemingly seeking sources of intellectual stimulation to meet this challenge of the future. Faculty; Students Today's student is more demanding. . .Today's professor must be more providing. The days of house-painting summers for teachers are over. Educators who formerly enjoyed lengthy sunshine sojourns now find this time fiLied as students themselves. Others broaden their intellectual horizons with educational excursions or extensive reading programs. The acquisition of this knowledge soon benefits the students too, as their instructors and professors pass it right on down to the newest freshman. This new breed of professor spearheads a campus curriculum that is graduating some of the nation's top students. Eastern is slowly shedding the title of teachers college as more and more courses are added and more and more professional fields are opened. Already, future doctors, engineers, and other pre-professional people are receiving the basics of their respective professions. This additional zeal, coupled with a growing, realistic curriculum, is both meeting and beating our educational challenge. 3ive Responses 1 00 Today's Sammy Sophomore and Suzie Senior are both far cries from yesterday's student. Maybe it's the air of determination on the football field. . . or that intellectual atmosphere of the campus. Realizing the ever-increasing importance and necessity of a college education, Eastern students are working with zeal ... pushing on in their pursuit of education. The abundance of scholars working their way through without seeking financial assistance marks tomorrow's graduate with independence and intelligence. The nation's future teachers are preparing to shoulder the burden of instructing and guiding the mass of students crowding into our educational system. These are days of dedication on the campus, with Eastern's future educators and scholars sharpening their intellects and broadening their horizons for the challenges ahead. oars Up, Up! 7 Response in Facilities Silhouetted against the towering rimrocks of the Silver Dollar City, Billings, one can easily see the $2.5 million Student Services Building which opened at the beginning of Winter Quarter. This building carries facilities for a modern, compact and practical women's dormitory for 300 co-eds. Sitting majestically on the east side of the campus is the new Physical Education Building with a seating capacity of 4,000 people, an olympic-size swimming pool, and classrooms and offices. With the flowering of these two buildings came the much-needed improvement to the former student union. Converted to the Music Hall, it houses the Foreign Language Laboratory, boasts the most modern equipment for individual listening, and features tape-recording facilities and recordcutting apparatus. All of these give foreign language students a better opportunity for improving oral comprehension of the four foreign languages offered at Eastern. There is evidence of more improvements, including the possibility of a new library and many other modern buildings. In the future. Eastern will continue to expand as in years past ... but to a much larger degree. Watch for the boom to balloon. Foreign Language Laboratory Control Board. Little of significance escapes Pete's pithy pen. The cartoonist's characters of the year included a man being burned at the stake who helplessly explained, ’’They caught me reading a Russian-English dictionary. With an eye to the need for more volumes in the school’s library, Pete drew several students wrassling in the library and commented, It’s this quarters new book. Place Your Bet” Writers Are Too Serious, Ogden Nash Tells Eastern Writers today take themselves and their work too seriously, humorous poet Ogden Nash told about 1,000 persons at a February convocation in Rimrock Hall. As a result, a lot of the punch is lost, the light versifier told the students and faculty from Eastern, Rocky Mountain College and Billings high schools. It was believed to be the largest convocation ever held at Eastern. The event was co-sponsored by the Student Affairs Committee and the Student Legislature. Humor, Nash said, is something to cling to in order to keep from falling off this whirling world. Nash said he looks for his material in television commercials, newspaper stories and advertisements, and in unconscious statements of ordinary people in everyday life. Nash sprinkled light verse throughout his talk and told of humorous experiences encountered while traveling. I got started writing my style of verse by-being hot and lazy, he said. I was too hot and lazy to adjust to the English language so I made it adjust to me. OGDEN NASH The New Yorker magazine evidently liked his type of poetry as they wrote and asked for more of the same, after accepting his Spring Comes to Murray Hill in 1931. Karen K. Bond (left) chats with Ogden Nash (center) and Jack Bobbitt at coffee hour prior to Nash Convocation. STEELE, President Although there have been many physical changes on Eastern's campus during the past few years, a less visible but equally important development is the change in attitude and maturity of today's college students. The college experience is now becoming an aspect of adult life, not simply a playful preparation. Young people of today have often been referred to as the angry young generation because they question, seek and demand reasons, and refuse to accept anything without examination or investigation. This attitude is typical of Eastern's student body, and is one that I find extremely healthy and worthy of encouragement. Iittellectual inquiry not only contributes to the individual's vitality but assists him in attaining his ultimate place as a valued member of society. The vitality and sense for relevant accomplishment that students may gain at college should spread to their academic work and thence to their later work. The student who learns to examine all things fairly, and to use reasoned judgment to decide action will be adequately prepared to meet the future with confidence and skill. These attitudes we expect as a result of four years of education at Eastern. We shall look to you, the members of the Class of 1962, to provide the proof that this is the result. H.L. Owens stressed the value of education throughout his address. He criticized the trend which many colleges seem to be taking in regard to their athletes. Francis L. Kafka, public relations director, acted as master of ceremonies. Other participants included Eastern President H. L. Steele, Carl Clavadetscher, then mayor of Billings; Charles Luedke, president of the Chamber of Commerce: William Orr, contractor for the building; Ur. Harold S. Alterowitz, athletic director; Clyde Christensen, president of the Student Legislature; and E. Lyle Cooper, chairman of the Language and Literature Division. Eastern’s gymnastic classes, the Madrigal Singers, and the Band provided entertainment. The Spurs and Intercollegiate Knights conducted tours through the building. New Physical Education Building Dr. Harold S. Altero-witz, athletic director, climbs out the then empty P.E.B. pool after a tour of inspection. Boosts EMC Physical Ed. Program The late Donald G. Nutter, governor of Montana; Eastern President H. L. Steele, and members and staff of the Montana Board of Regents view the swimming pool from the spectators section during a tour of the Physical Education Building. 107 Inti'c ri pro9 ram Is Extensive President Kennedy’s health and physical education program was aided on the Eastern campus—voluntarily—during the past year. Spectator it us n may soon become a thing of the past because everyone has an opportunity to participate in the intramural program conductod in the new Physical Education Building. More than 200 hoys participated in the intramural basketball program which was held during Winter Quarter. Other students enjoyed softball, volleyball, gymnastics, weight-lifting, handball and paddle tennis . Varsity basketball coach Mike Harkins gives tips to students in a beginning basketball class. Coach Allen Feldner demonstrates the correct lorm when serving a game of handball. 09 Physical education instructor Nels Christiansen instructs a beginning badminton class in the art of serving the birdie. At the same time, the synchronized swimmers are practicing maneuvers in the indoor heated swimming pool. 110 Dennis Fisher, (42), Clifton, N.
