The 1960 Rimrock Presented by the Associated Students Eastern Montana College Volume Thirty-two Billings, Montana Foreword As memory preserves illusion and fact, so limo destroys illusion and alters fact. The function of the Rimrock is tha of recording tangible fact in an attempt to preserve for alumni both that fact and emotional illusion. It is only possible o halt what is called progress symbolically. Pictures can preserve an impression of past events; copy can aid in recalling those events to the reader. In thirty or forty years when you return o look at the old school. you’ll not find it—nor will you find the old Billings. You'll find the institution which you attended here in name only; the physical plant and academic processes will be largely foreign to you. One physical feature of Eastern and Billings that will not have changed will be the rimrocks. which, to you. will be the symbol of a bygone day. as will this yearbook, the Rimrock. 1. Altcrowitz. A member of the EMCE faculty since 1948. Dr. Alterowitz is head of the health, physical education and recreation department and director of athletics. He holds the B.S.S. degree from the College of the City of New York and the M.A. and Ed.D degrees from Teachers College of Columbia University. He has served as the Montana representative to the American Association of Health. Physical Education and Recreation assembly and is a member of several AAHPER committees. In 1956-57 he was president of the northwest AAHPER district. Dr. Altcrowitz is currently a consultant to the curriculum committee on physical education for Montana. He holds the office of president of the Montana Collegiate Conference for the second time in 12 years. In April 1959 the HPER Journal published Dr. Alterowitz's article, ‘‘The Emasculation of Physical Education.” A description of his TV program. Look Like a Million. appeared in the October issue. Dr Alterowitz’s 13th year at EMCE will be highlighted by the construction of the new physical education plant —after years of planning and hard work, a dream come true. Carol Brown Editor The camera catches Shorty in a few of his many activities: (top) Dr. Altcrowitz and Mrs. Gloria Karr demonstrate physical fitness exercises for housewives on the afternoon TV program. Look like a Million ; (second) advising HPER majors during registration; (third) leading the bunny hop line at an alumni dinner dance; (fourth) working with Jumping Jacks and Jills, a group of campus school children; (bottom) receiving a faculty service certificate at the February dinner honoring professors with ten or more years of service to EMCE. 3 Administration Building Education Building Greenhouse I Eastern Begins Construction Of Physical Education Building Construction of a $1V4 million physical education building for the Eastern Montana College of Education campus began in February, following the award of contracts to three Billings firms by the University of Montana Board of Regents. The building, scheduled for completion by fall quarter of 1961, is being constructed on the east side of No. 27th St., on the site of the old practice athletic field. Overall dimensions of the building will be 227 feet by 217 feet. The structure will contain a regulation National Collegiate Athletic Association swimming pool, a gymnasium with a seating capacity of 4,000, offices for members of the physical education faculty, classrooms, two concession units, dressing rooms for faculty members, locker rooms for men and women students, a dancing room, two activity rooms and a handball court. 6 Architect’s sketch of the new physical education building now under construction on the EMCE campus. DR HERBERT L STEELE The President For each of us this annual represents reflection of the past year as well as anticipation for the future. Friendships newly acquired, knowledge and insights gained, success and frustration contributing to attaining maturity, all are reflected herein. Many times in the years to come the events of the past months will be re-created from these pages. Future class reunions will justify to students and faculty the anticipation of accomplished achievement. It is my hope that this year has resulted in a mutual interchange of influence between each of you and the College—you have left a small part of you to influence the future development of Eastern, and a part of the College goes with you through your life. O, whenever you want to hear the music of the nicest bands; Whenever you feel romantic, in a mood for holding hands; Whenever the moon and stars are shining in that certain way; Nine-seventy is the spot—K-double-O-K. Melodies making the airwaves sing of love; the melodies just for you; The music for smart young adults and the news that’s really new; There’s really no better way, you’ll find, to start off a happy day Than when you’re listening to K-double-O-K.
