Both were active in athletics and other school activities. Their friendships and contributions to college life zvill remain in the memories of all. PAGE 22 t)edica tion Professor William Hoheisel Professor Oliver Peterson In appreciation for many years of enlightened service to Eastern, the 1958 Rimrock is dedicated to Professor Oliver Peterson and Professor William Hoheisel. These men have made vast contributions to their fields as well as to the many students who have studied under their direction. Not only have they contributed to the culture and educational enlightenment of the students of Eastern, they are both noted for their contributions to the community of Billings and the state of Montana. Eastern students have been fortunate in having Mr. Peterson and Mr. Hoheisel to assist them and hope that future students will continue to have this privilege. Mr. Hoheisel has introduced a multitude of students to the field of science. He has helped students and people of the Midland Empire to open their eyes and observe the wonders of nature that surround them in their environment. His work with the Audubon Society and the Boy Scouts of America is applauded by the college and the community. In the field of mathematics, Mr. Peterson has struggled with prospective engineers, teachers, geologists, and other students, helping them gain the proper perspective to pursue their objectives. In the field of education, he has provided guidance for prospective teachers, and professional educational personnel throughout the state of Montana and the nation. He has served as one of the eleven directors of the National Education Association and for many years was a director of the Montana Education Association. Many times, the work of these two men has been accomplished quietly, without a word of thanks. Therefore, the students of Eastern Montana College of Education take this opportunity to express their heartfelt gratitude for a job well done. To Professor Oliver Peterson and Professor William Hoheisel, we dedicate this annual. It is noteworthy that you have attempted to maintain a good balance between your educational pursuits and your other college-related enterprises. There has been no tendency to study in any particular subject area in such a way as to impair your over-all educational development. Neither was there apparent a desire to avoid your responsibilities, an over-emphasis of the non-academic aspects of college life. For this you are to be commended. For many of you, there has been the sudden realization of your responsibility to yourself and your country to make the best use of the educational opportunities available to you. The benefits of this will be evident in the years ahead as you assume positions of leadership and authority, both in Montana, and elsewhere in the nation. It is my firm belief that an alumni reunion twenty years hence will justify my faith in you. PAGE 30 H. L. STEELE; President Milton F. Johnson B. A.. M. A. Manager Jerry Whitmer Manager Jerry Porter fyoatball Manager Dick Sayler Eastern’s Yellowjackets had another successful season in 1957, winning six games wtfile losing only two. Opening game jitters caused the Buzzers to bow to a powerful, experienced club from Westminster College. Salt Lake City, 20 to 0. The next weekend, the Jackets had little trouble handing a game Trappers team from Powell a 12-to-7 defeat. The Yellowjackets’ sting was too much for the Bears from Rocky. They couldn’t withstand the powerful onslaught of the Buzzers’ line and backs and so took a 26-to-13 defeat The Midland Roundtable tomahawk remains on the Eastern campus as a special reward for this smashing victory. Homecoming fans witnessed a field day for their grid warriors. Eastern drubbed the Lights from Northern 52 to 0. The winning ways continued the following week as the Hornets handed the Western Bulldogs a 38-to-13 defeat. It was a well-played contest with the Jackets on the long end of a 25-to-0 halftime lead. The Beavers from Minot State Teachers College invaded Bjorgum field only to have a stronger Hornet team move to a well earned victory. The only conference loss occurred the following weekend at Helena as the Carroll Saints gained a l2-to-6 victory. It was an upset and a tough one to lose, but Eastern’ll get ’em next year. Finishing the most perfect season in many a year was the 37-to-0 victory scored over the Montana School of Mines. With seven Yellowjackets placing on the Montana Collegiate Conference All-Star first team and two winning berths on the second team, it was a year that will long be remembered in the history of Eastern. Dick Harkins and Ron Ewing also gained special honor by being named to the All-America Honorable Mention squad. Most of the football heros of the season will be back to play for Eastern again next year. At DICK HARKINS. Half Back. On All-America (Honorable Mention) and First Team Montana Collegiate Conference. That still is our policy. An example: Work now is being pushed on Cochrane Project near Great Falls, where ground was broken October 6, 1956, for our 13th hydroelectric plant. We also have a steam-electric generating plant at Billings. All of this means that every time you flick your wall switch vnu are tapping 611,000 kilowatts of power—nearly twice as much as was available on our system at the end of World War II. History-Minded Montana Montana became history-minded at an early period of its existence. The Territory of Montana was created under Act of Congress which was approved May 26. 1864. Only 21 months later Col Wilbur F. Sanders of Virginia City fame and his associates had brought about the passage of a measure creating an historical society. The first meeting of the organization was held in the office of Dance and Stuart, Virginia City, on Feb. 25, 1865. The first president, temporary and permanent, was Granville Stuart. He also was the first treasurer. H. L. Hosmer was the first historian. The first board of directors was composed of Hosmer, Sanders, Malcolm Clark, Chris P. Higgins and Walter W DeLacey. F M. Thompson was chairman of the committee which nominated these officers. Stuart, Thompson and Hosmer were the members of the committee that selected the society’s seal. The society was created as exciting history was being made. There wasn’t much historical material to work on, except the recollections of the trail blazers themselves. However, the society did take a firm foothold in those early days and has maintained an existence without interruption. For eight years the society depended upon individual effort in the collection of both material and funds. The first legislative appropriation was signed May 7, 1873, and provided for an annual payment of $150 for the purchase of manuscripts and books relating to the territory and for other expenses. ★ ★ ★ THE page 138 At The Mixers MILKY WAY Where Eastern Students Meet 108 Poly Drive Fountain Service — Sandwiches Dinners PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD O' 'O S Since 1906” 2815 1st Ave. N.
