a tyCo at ‘View I sincerely hope that in planning their future careers. Eastern’s students will take a global view of things to come. Each student should be aware of the important role of the United States in world affairs. It is obvious with the world community shaping up as it is, that we will err seriously if our point of view is ol a local nature. Provincialism is a danger which we all must avoid. American businessmen, scientists, military men, scholars and special consultants are now located in all parts of the world. This situation is only the beginning. We can readily anticipate that the citizens of the United States will have increased opportunities for service in all fields of activity throughout the world for a long time into the future. A lack of understanding and lack of ability to communicate with the peoples of the world has been, and continues to be, a serious handicap in world understanding and leadership. It would seem that college students must make every effort possible to overcome provincialism and communication difficulties. As a nation we are not prepared at the present time to understand the people in the Middle East, the Far East, in Africa, or even in Europe. Several questions that should be considered in institutions of higher learning might be as follows: What are the colleges doing to improve world-wide understanding at the present time? What are you as a college student doing to improve world-wide understanding? Is Eastern providing the necessary appreciations, skills and knowledge which will assist graduates in becoming world citizens? Are the fields of knowledge, such as world geography, world history, world literature and foreign languages, receiving the proper emphasis in the various college curricula? Are we as students and faculty members of Eastern fully aware of the position in which the United States finds itself today? It is obvious that we suddenly find ourselves in the position of having some of the world’s most serious responsibilities in our hands. The challenge and the responsibility of improving global understanding rests squarely with each individual. To members of the Class of 1957, I extend my wholehearted congratulations, trusting that each of you. as a member of a great generation, will accept your portion of the responsibility to advance world-wide understanding. DR. A. G. PETERSON
