1997 Rirnrock Presents COLLEGE LIFE Published by The Associated Students EASTERN MONTANA COLLEGE OF EDUCATION The University of Montana in Hillings THE BEAUTY OF MONTANA The natural beauty of the country surrounding Billings is taken advantage of by the faculty and students at the college in recreational programs, in class work, and in extracurricular activities. The Custer National Forest. Pryor Mountains, the Big Horn Mountains, the BcartOOth Mountains, and Yellowstone National Park, are all close enough for field trips in such courses as conservation, geology. art and other sciences. Some of the activities of Eastern students are portrayed on this page.—Photos courtesy of Forest Service. The Education Building Mental Hygiene Center Science Hall New Men's Residence Hall A Beautiful Campus CAMPUS SOCIAL LIFE Formal occasions have been part of the campus life at Eastern this year. In the fall, there was the Christmas formal. The Winter quarter had the Sweetheart Ball, and the Junior-Senior Prom in the spring is enjoyed bv all college students. Members of the Ayudas and Intercollegiate Knights served as ushers on a number of occasions during the college year. Many informal dances, picnics, and mixers also conti lbuted to the campus social life during the year. FINE ARTS AND BUSINESS Tlie Fine Arts and Business Departments pi ovule opportunities for students to prepare for careers in these important fields. Both Departments at Eastern are unusually well eouipptd for the training required. The Fall quarter saw the Business Department completely renovated so that the college now has one of the outstanding Departments in the entire Western section of the United States. Fine Arts exhibits from the National Galleries are displayed in the Student Union throughout the entire year. This adds to the cultural development of students who attend the college. MUSIC AT EASTERN The Music Department continues to enlarge its facilities and staff. Tours are made by the band, the choral groups, and the Madri-galians singers each year. A new service was provided this year when the Alumni Association gave a carillon to the college. Shown at right is Prof George Royer at the carillon console. The band is shown above during a rehearsal, and the Madrigalian singers are shown below. V t I CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ADVISORY COMMITTEE The program at Eastern is of such a nature as to contribute to many needs of the state of Montana and of the local community. Helping the college in its many activities is an Advisory Committee appointed by the Chamber of Commerce, which works with college officials and students. This group is shown at the right during one of the past year’s meetings. Left to right, seated, are Mrs. R. C. Dillavou, Mrs. May Tharalson, Mrs. Norma Stotesbury, Mrs. Louise Denny, James R. Felt, A. C. Madson and Dr. A. G. Peterson; middle row, Lincoln Ai-kins, Dr. Charles Price, Harold Seipp, A. F. Lamey, Russell Hart, Sam Stewart, Clyde Howard, Warren J. Hancock and M. E. Johnson; back row, M. C. Gallagher, W. F. Stevens, Dr Albert Hopkins, Franklin Longan and Doane Fessenden. STUDENT GOVERNMENT Eastern has been noted throughout the past few years for its democratic student government. The Associated Students of Eastern choose representatives to serve them on the Student Legislature throughout the year. The Dean of Student Personnel Services serves with this group in a supervisory capacity. The Legislature itself chooses a faculty representative to sit with it, also in a supervisory capacity. Students also serve in equal number on faculty committees in determining many phases of college life. When a student leaves Eastern, he is well equipped to become a contributing member of our society. II Members of the 1956-57 Student Legislature, shown at left, are Dr. Dale Daugherty, Pat Ashall, Yvonne Ilageness, Herb Mangis, Margaret Roe, Jim Wrightson, Vice President Jim Haugen. President George Klepich, Business Manager Don Herndon, Secretary Dick Harkins, Bob Betzer. Kathryn Schultz. Larry Esp and Lloyd Lockrem Jr. ; ) THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT The Science Department at Eastern offers preparation for a wide variety of careers for students. The increasing number of students preparing to teach high school science and mathematics has necessitated expansion of the entire Science Department During the past year courses have been added m such fields as gynetics. embryology, bio-ecology, and additional work in geology. PRE-NURSING STUDENTS Many students take their work in prenursing at Eastern. The group shown below are some of the pre-nursing students who participated in a tea held at Eastern during the Winter quarter. PROGRAM FOR ATHLETES The athletic program at Eastern is designed to tram fine qualities in its athletes. The participants of the major sports of the college are also outstanding students academically and rank high as student leaders on the campus. The Yellowjackets of Eastern are a first-division team in football, basketball, baseball and track. The fighting spirit and stinging power of the Yellowjackets make them one of the most feared opponents of any collegiate conference athletic group. ) A COSMOPOLITAN STUDENT BODY Eastern’s student body is indeed a cosmopolitan group. In it aie many former h gh school leaders, such as valedictorians, salutatorians, student body presidents. Key Club members, and a large number of high school class officers, high school paper and yearbook editors During the 1956-57 year. 15 states and five foreign countries were represented in the student body. Shown above is Miss Eetty Lysler. director of Student Activities at the college, welcoming some students from distant places. From left to right are Darwin Tobing of Indonesia, Josephine Carnate and Harriet Baren of Hawaii, and John Hagen and Jan Kroon of Holland. RELIGIOUS EMPHASIS ON CAMPUS The important place of religion in the life of the college student is recognized by Eastern students and faculty. A reception held last fall introduced students to the ministers of billings. Religious Emphasis Week, also an event of the year, is looked forward to by the students. Members of the student body attend churches of their own denomination in the city. There are 58 denominational groups in Billings. Shown below at the Interdenominational Mixer last fall are. left to right, the Rev. David Dwyer of St Patrick’s parish; Donald Benson, Carol Birmingham, David Bradley; Dr. T F Rutledge Beale of the First Congregational Church; Miss Betty L. Lyster, Jane Harney. Mrs. Harry Fay, a hostess; and Dr A G. Peterson, president of Eastern. COUNSELING Students frequent the Counseling Center for help in arranging courses of study when personal problems arise, when they meet with problems in regard to the program of studies they are pursuing, when they meet with financial difficulties, or with many other problems which seem to follow college students wherever they go. TESTING Tests are given to Eastern students who desire them to help in planning their courses of studies, to determine the fields in which they would make the best success in life, for selective service, and fur many other purposes. The General Education test is also given in the testing center for people who have reached the age of 21 and desire to take college work but have not graduated from high school PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT A student here tills out an application with the secretary of the Lean ot Personnel Services for part-time employment on the campus and in business establishments within the city. Over sixty per cent of the students at the college have had part-time employment during the present year. REGISTRAR S OFFICE Many students find help at the Registrar’s Of-lice with problems of transfer, in clarification of veteran’s benefits, and in evaluation of credits toward the curriculum which they are following. TEACHER PREPARATION More teachers for Montana are being prepared at Eastern than in any other institution of higher education in the state. This is true at both the elementary and high school level. A tea is held each quarter by student-teachers to which their supervising teachers and college faculty members are invited At the left is a group discussing the program of teaching in the Billings schools. Hundreds of student-teachers arc trained each year in the Campus School and the Billings Public Schools. Below a college student teaches a geography class at Lewis and Clark Junior High of Billings. SPECIAL EDUCATION Special Education at Eastern finds many students preparing to help crippled children and those who need special attention. To assist in this program, a number of cooperating agencies on the campus work together. These include the Mental Hygiene Clinic, the Cerebral Palsy Clinic, the Campus School, a Heading Clinic and a Speech and Hearing Clinic. CAMPUS SCHOOL Eastern has the only Campus School in the state of Montana. Visitors have rated it as being one of the finest to be found in the United States. This school provides opportunities for students in child growth and development, psychology, and education to work closely with real situations in learning the arts of education. The scene below is one in which two rooms of the Campus School are meeting together for a learning experience in art. College students, supervising teachers, and children find such experiences to be stimulating for learning. The influence of the Eastern faculty extends to many professional groups, not only throughout the State of Montana, but throughout the Western part of the United States and the nation as a whole Above are shown faculty members who have important positions off campus. From left to right are Back row, Oscar Bjorgum, secretary of the Northwest District American Association of Health. AERIAL VIEW OF CAMPUS t edica tion Prof. Oscar Bjorgum: Your friendliness, sincerity, and personal warmth will be stamped indelibly on the memories of a host of Eastern students. Your ability to communicate with every type of student is one of your greatest assets, and has made physical education a rewarding and pleasant experience for many. Not only on Eastern’s campus, but throughout the Midland .Empire, you have contributed to the needs and interests of youth by providing understanding and leadership. Your methodology and personality characteristics have been, are, and will be exemplified on the athletic fields of this and many other states, and you may take a great deal of pride in a job well done. It must be a satisfying experience to review over three decades of service to Eastern and its students. May we take this opportunity to congratulate you on the first three, and wish you many more of the same fine quality. To You, We Dedicate This Annual Sincerely, The Students of Eastern Dr. Vernom Cooper: We extend our most sincere thanks to you for your guidance in lighting the way to an understanding of the relationships and interactions between men. As a result of your efforts in the field of social education, we have learned to think critically and evaluate carefully. You may take justifiable pride in knowing that your ideas and interpretations will be transmitted to generations yet to come. Your extensive knowledge, your sincerity of purpose, and your humanitarian philosophy shall be long remembered and emulated by many; and your contribution to Eastern and its students shall be of lasting and inestimable value. To You, We Dedicate This Annual Sincerely, The Students of Eastern Miss Pep Club and Miss Student Union Don Herndon Miss Majorette Eva Bird Mr. IK John Geiken Miss Rifle Club Joan Griffith Mr. E Club Ralph Newell Mr. Alpha Psi and IK Queen Mr. Katoya Player Kathryn Erickson Tom Schuyler Cheer Queen Joan Yedlicka MEMBERS OF THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION give much time and thought to work of the University of Montana. Members of this important group in state educational affairs are shown above, from left to right: Clarence Popham. Corvallis; George N. Lund. Reserve; Mrs. F. H. Petro, Miles City; Dr. Emmet J. Riley, Butte; Miss Harriet Miller, ex-officio; Governor J. Hugo Aronson, ex-officio; Forrest Anderson, ex-officio; A. B. Guthrie, Great Falls; Merritt Warden. Kal-ispell; Mrs. George Chambers, Cut Bank; Horace Dwyer, Anaconda EASTERN’S LOCAL EXECUTIVE BOARD is a group appointed by the Governor to coordinate the college’s program of education with the needs of the state. Its members perform an advisory and consultative service in their relationship to the college president and to the State Board of Education. As the college concentrates more on the live vital problems of the state, the citizens will also perform a greater service for the college. Members of the Board, shown below, from left to right are Otis L. Packwood, Mrs. R. C. Dillavou. and Grover C. Cisel Mr. Cisel is chairman. a tyCo at ‘View I sincerely hope that in planning their future careers. Eastern’s students will take a global view of things to come. Each student should be aware of the important role of the United States in world affairs. It is obvious with the world community shaping up as it is, that we will err seriously if our point of view is ol a local nature. Provincialism is a danger which we all must avoid. American businessmen, scientists, military men, scholars and special consultants are now located in all parts of the world. This situation is only the beginning. We can readily anticipate that the citizens of the United States will have increased opportunities for service in all fields of activity throughout the world for a long time into the future. A lack of understanding and lack of ability to communicate with the peoples of the world has been, and continues to be, a serious handicap in world understanding and leadership. It would seem that college students must make every effort possible to overcome provincialism and communication difficulties. As a nation we are not prepared at the present time to understand the people in the Middle East, the Far East, in Africa, or even in Europe. Several questions that should be considered in institutions of higher learning might be as follows: What are the colleges doing to improve world-wide understanding at the present time? What are you as a college student doing to improve world-wide understanding? Is Eastern providing the necessary appreciations, skills and knowledge which will assist graduates in becoming world citizens? Are the fields of knowledge, such as world geography, world history, world literature and foreign languages, receiving the proper emphasis in the various college curricula? Are we as students and faculty members of Eastern fully aware of the position in which the United States finds itself today? It is obvious that we suddenly find ourselves in the position of having some of the world’s most serious responsibilities in our hands. The challenge and the responsibility of improving global understanding rests squarely with each individual. To members of the Class of 1957, I extend my wholehearted congratulations, trusting that each of you. as a member of a great generation, will accept your portion of the responsibility to advance world-wide understanding. First Law Providing For Public Schools When the Territory of Montana was established the Organic Act made the following provision for education: And be it further enacted, that when the lands in said territory shall be surveyed under the direction of the government of the United States, preparatory to bringing the same into market, sections number 16 and 36 in each township in said territory shall be. and the same are hereby reserved for the purpose of being applied to schools in said territory, and in the states and territories hereinafter erected out of the same. In his address to the Legislative Assembly, Sidney K. Edgerton, first territorial governor, pointed out that the endowment would provide a rich fund for education but that its benefits would not be immediately available. He urged an adequate tax levy to provide school funds in the meantime. The Legislature was prompt to act on the Governor’s suggestion and provided for the establishment of a “Common School System for the Territory of Montana. The act became a law with the governor’s signature on Feb. 7, 1865. The first 12 sections of the act were concerned with school revenues. It was provided that the principal of all moneys accruing to the territory from the sale of lands granted by Congress, shall constitute an irreducible fund, the interest from which to be annually divided among the school districts. ★ ★ ★ THE ANACONDA COMPANY PATRONIZE RIMROCK ADVERTISERS The managers of these business establishments are interested in you as a student at Eastern and take pride in Eastern Montana College.
