Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1956 volume:

r (fauvctty @otleye Growing with the community of Billings, Eastern is gaining in both population and reputation. As we look back over the progress of Eastern we can see its achievements as well as its growing pains; we can see an expanding institution, that formed from a nucleous of a need for an Educational site in the Billings area. Looking over Billings as well as the vast territory around it, we see many fine accomplishments of our college. The teachers, the business and professional men and women, all of those who have come, have learned and have gone out to contribute to their community and society many of the riches gained at Eastern. In many ways they have given spark and direction to the society of which they are a part. PAGE 2 t t ddnccviety @ommuttct t When we compare our campus today to the campus of Eastern ten years ago, we note the new buildings and the increased numbers of faculty and students. Also in this comparison, we note the increased prestige of the rank of Eastern in the field of Education. When we think of Eastern, we can well be proud of our college, our faculty, and our opportunities. Along with our campus expansion, the expansion of the democratic ideals that have grown with our college have given students an added opportunity to learn and grow into a society of which we shall soon be as much a part as our college. We can not remember Eastern, and our years spent here, without remembering the many advantages that were offered to us as students, in all phases of our campus life, when we were growing with our college. page 3 GUIDING TIIE DESTINY OF EASTERN FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS HAS BEEN PRESIDENT A. G. PETERSON WITH HIS UNLIMITED ENTHUSIASM FOR EDUCATIONAL PROGRESS. IN HIM, THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS WHO HAVE PASSED THROUGH OUR PORTALS HAVE FOUND A SINCERE FRIEND 'WitA £yc4 oh t C 'putceic Even the uninitiated in our culture today are aware of the place that higher education plays in the life of the citizenry of this state and of our country as a whole. It is apparent that human being are at stake and that Eastsrn must be meticulous in its efforts to achieve only the highest standards of professional conduct. Obviously, we must be guided only by the highest type of motives. These must in turn be directed by the basic principles which un-derly democratic and Christian modes of action. An architect works with height, width and depth to construct a solid and beautiful building. At Eastern, as architects of human life. w build with three dimensions. The first is physical fitness. A healthy individual contributes much, not only to his own welfare, but to the good of his associates and community. Our second dimension is the development of mental powers for efficient living. Mental powers plus physical cultivation begins to produce one of the world's most valuable resources—young men and women who are able to think clearly and direct their lives capably. Our third dimension as architects of human life is social adaptability, from which comes joy and happiness when filly framed together with the other two. With this dimension, we can have harmonious relationships between people, co-ordination of interests and talents, teamwork, and finally, a healthy approach to a solution of the world's future. Eastern faces the future with great hope and pride. The vigorous growth and development of the college, in spite of an unreasonably low budget, definitely indicates a successful future. Further developments in needed educational services are inevitable. Such needed services and activities should have the wholehearted support of all who are interested in the progress of our society if Eastern is to succeed in its proper service to those who seek higher education. In this entire program Eastern must cooperate with the other institutions of the Greater University of Montana in an unselfish and wholesome manner in order that a complete and sincere educational service may be developed. To members of the class of 1956. I extend my wholehearted congratulations, trusting that a portion of the vigor, the progressiveness, and the spirit of Eastern shall contribute to a richer, more enjoyable and more significant life for each of you. DR. A. G. PETERSON PAGE 4 MEMBERS OF THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION give much lime and energy to work of the units of the University. Work of such groups has made possible the tremendous growth and vitality of college education in this country. Shown above from left to right: Mrs. F. H. Pelro. Miles City; Clarence Popham. Kalispell; Mrs. George Chambers. Cut Bank; and Horace Dwyer. Anaconda. EASTERN'S LOCAL EXECUTIVE BOARD is a group appointed by the Governor to co-ordinate Eastern's program of education and the community of which it is a part. Its members are to appraise the physical plant, campus grounds, educational facilities and student living conditions. They perform an advisory and consultative service in their relationship to the President and to the Stale Board. Through this means there is a good relationship between college and community. As Eastern concentrates more on the live, vital problems of the community, the community will also be of greater service to the college. Members of the Board shown below from left to right: George E. In this time, you have had a major influence on the lives and careers of many. A FAR CRY FROM THE LITTLE RED SCHOOL HOUSE Eastern's elementary school, using all modern facilities and methods in teaching of children, is a real asset to our school community. The Elementary school offers opportunities to the education students of Eastern to observe and practice their newly learned teaching skill at first hand. While the work of the school is systematic, the atmosphere is natural and informal, the children arc given the opportunity to develop a freedom through self-discipline and the acceptance of responsibility. The individual child is taught how to cope with the problems that come before him as well as his basic skills of the three r's and other academic work. virs. Irene D. Lectures, exhibits, demonstrations, discussions, and group meetings have been featured. Registration totaled 479 at the 1955 Conference held July 14- 15. The keynote speaker was Dr. A. Sterl Artley, Professor of Education at the University of Missouri. Dr. Artley is a noted lecturer, author, teacher and director of the child study clinic. Mrs. Dora Reese, Eastern's Reading Consultant, was conference chairman and director. EASTERN'S GRADUATE STUDENTS Herb C. Eakman Chet Jensen William N. Miller Lillian Seymour The Graduate Program at Eastern was formally adopted by the college faculty on February 9, 1956. This marks another advancement in the onward progress of the college. Awarding the Master of Science in Education degree means that Eastern will have a much closer tie-in with professional education circles in the community, the state and the Northwest region than it has ever had before. About 90 students have taken some graduate work during the past year. Among these have been Robert L. Bennett, Grace W. Cummins, Lois Hackney, Earl Halverson, Lawrence Hanson, John Lackman, James Marshall, Amalie Shannon, Russeline Vannoy and Don Woehl. PAGE 12 ALTEROWITZ, HAROLD S. Mr. Jensen took his master's degree with a concentration in reading. Eastern is entering into a new and wider field with this step forward in their position in the field of education. The Graduate school is now an actual part of Eastern and with this step we can congratulate both Mr. Jensen and the administration of the college. The speakers at Eastern's Alumni Association program above are: James Nicholson, Judge Otis Packwood, Mrs. Frank Kology, Dr. A. G. Peterson and Dr. Raymond Troyer. ALUMNI DAY An Alumni Day was held March 31, to start an active association. The association elected officers and held a general meeting to reacquaint the alumni of Eastern with the present program and the future of the school. Dr. Peterson voiced his confidence in the alumni and assured them that the administration and faculty stand ready to help in the alumni program. With this on the agenda of Eastern, the alumni and the friends of Eastern have an inspiration to continue to help and plan for the growth and expansion of the school which they attended in past years.
