Blackie Yonce. We saw that Homecoming, 1952. was the most successful of any Eastern activity to date. There was more per-capita participation, shown by the fervent campaigns for Queen and by the increased attendance at the rally, the game, the parade and at the memorial service for Wes Salonen. The good will picked up for the school downtown was evident When some of the dorm girls got together and agreed to put up posters for the Queen nominees, and when others caught the spark of school interest, it looked as though Dr. Peterson's statement about the phenomenal conduct of the students would be justified. So all that week we saw them work on parade floats and otherwise prepare for the big weekend, the climax of which was to be the game with Mines.” The Flaming E rally on Friday night was effective, and the announcement of Rita's election was a fitting prelude to the next day About 11:00 a m . Eastern's homocoming parade began to wind noisily down 27th. Later on. with the cross-country race won by Sam and with his kiss from Rita pleasantly out of the way. we settled down to an enjoyable afternoon of football, so we thought. That such an exceptional start to an exceptional success ended as it did. is indeed tragic. Perhaps a tradition of general apathy in school affairs would have died a violent death, even a gradual one.
