Psychology as a Modern Science The science of psychology has implications for us all that arc staggering in consequence As is true of most scientific developments, it has possibilities for both good and evil j;or many decades our educators have carried on intensive research and experimentation in the technique of controlled or directed thinking particularly as it applies to the learning process on the pro high school level The intent, as far as the educator is concerned is not for evil but for good. In a very short space of time, however, business took advantage of the findings in the field of psychology for the purpose of stepping up sales and creating better working conditions. The result was evident in greater efficiency and in greater earning power Obvi ously business made use of the findings mostly for monetary gain, not as a rule for altruistic or evil purposes The next step in the growth of this important science saw its further application during the second World War. It became a major weapon as the psychologist took his stand at the right side of Hitler Mussolini, and Stalin This new weapon was applied via the radio, the newspapers, and the speech In this way the individual minds of men and women of an entire nation or group of nations, was welded into a common pattern of thinking as directed and as desired by selfish and unscrupulous political leaders I he results are known by all Men had no defense against this new weapon and as a result, became slaves and pawns in the hands of the unscrupulous We saw how the concentration camp and the controlled press became an ugly and devilish culmination of all that was vile in man Since then the cold war has continued with this important weapon, the con trol of mans mind Nations and individuals are being conquered without a shot being fired China is the recent and notable victim among nations. Cardinal Mindtzenty. Robert Vogeler. and Michael Shipkov arc recent victims among individuals whose minds have been twisted and destroyed until they are no longer controlled by their rightful owners Those minds are now controlled by vicious and fiendish human beings drunk with power, a type of power which has its roots in hell Thus the science of psychology takes its place in a modern world It is a power that can free us from slavery or enslave those of us who are free. The A bomb and the H bomb may cause our deaths, but for Cardinal Mindtzenty. Mr Vogeler. and Mr. Shipkov, the evil use of psychology has made life a million times worse than death Here we have the control of man's thinking at its worst. The defense is obviously an individual who is trained in an atmosphere of true democracy, an individual who recognizes the danger of false gods and who develops his own convictions He must also be an individual who has the courage to support those convictions if he expects to survive.
