RIMROCK- 1950 EASTERN MONTANA COLLEGE of EDUCATION BILLINGS, MONTANA • - -� , t • % S3N3DS SndlAlVD Psychology as a Modern Science The science of psychology has implications for us all that arc staggering in consequence As is true of most scientific developments, it has possibilities for both good and evil j;or many decades our educators have carried on intensive research and experimentation in the technique of controlled or directed thinking particularly as it applies to the learning process on the pro high school level The intent, as far as the educator is concerned is not for evil but for good. In a very short space of time, however, business took advantage of the findings in the field of psychology for the purpose of stepping up sales and creating better working conditions. The result was evident in greater efficiency and in greater earning power Obvi ously business made use of the findings mostly for monetary gain, not as a rule for altruistic or evil purposes The next step in the growth of this important science saw its further application during the second World War. It became a major weapon as the psychologist took his stand at the right side of Hitler Mussolini, and Stalin This new weapon was applied via the radio, the newspapers, and the speech In this way the individual minds of men and women of an entire nation or group of nations, was welded into a common pattern of thinking as directed and as desired by selfish and unscrupulous political leaders I he results are known by all Men had no defense against this new weapon and as a result, became slaves and pawns in the hands of the unscrupulous We saw how the concentration camp and the controlled press became an ugly and devilish culmination of all that was vile in man Since then the cold war has continued with this important weapon, the con trol of mans mind Nations and individuals are being conquered without a shot being fired China is the recent and notable victim among nations. Cardinal Mindtzenty. Robert Vogeler. and Michael Shipkov arc recent victims among individuals whose minds have been twisted and destroyed until they are no longer controlled by their rightful owners Those minds are now controlled by vicious and fiendish human beings drunk with power, a type of power which has its roots in hell Thus the science of psychology takes its place in a modern world It is a power that can free us from slavery or enslave those of us who are free. The A bomb and the H bomb may cause our deaths, but for Cardinal Mindtzenty. Mr Vogeler. and Mr. Shipkov, the evil use of psychology has made life a million times worse than death Here we have the control of man's thinking at its worst. The defense is obviously an individual who is trained in an atmosphere of true democracy, an individual who recognizes the danger of false gods and who develops his own convictions He must also be an individual who has the courage to support those convictions if he expects to survive. This group officially has the last word concerning Eastern activities and organizations. Special problems are brought before this group Mr Robert Bradford. EMCOE Series speaker, presented to the Student Council the idea of an international student league. The Student Council voted to submit this idea to the associated students, so that a delegate might be selected to attend the conference in Europe. It is the council's mam duty to allocate the amount of student fees that each department- dramatics, sports, student activities. RIMROCK and EMCOE will receive from the general activity fund paid bv the students at the beginning of each quarter. Member ship to the Board is by petition with the final election by the student body. Eastern Student Union Board became a member of the National Association of College Unions this year. I his marks the first year ol the Stingers at Eastern During the fall quarter of 1949. fifteen Eastern minded students met with the Expansion Viceroy of the Intercollegiate Knights to form a group dedicated to service. 1 he Stingers petitioned the national organization lor a charter At the annual Worthy Recorder Advisor national convention held on the campus of Montana State College at Bozeman. April 21. 1950. the charter was granted With service as its motto, the Stingers took pan in many activities at Eastern. T he Eastern gym took on an aspect of the Lone Prairie when the I K -s presented their Knights on the Range dance. Thor Baker SKATED Nursery-KInderaarten Children Cerebral Palsy is a generic term covering several typos ol motor impediments due to brain-damage In the majority of cases, birth injuries are responsible for damage to the brain but diseases and accidents of later life are also major causes. Victims are frequently called spastics . this is erroneous because spasticity is but one of five chief types ot cerebral palsy. It is estimated that about seven cases appear each year per 100.000 of population. Cases in Montana at present approximate 700; but .10 date, no actuate survey has ever been made. I he problem of cerebral palsy is as pressing as that of polio, yet because cerebral palsy is not epidemic or otherwise spectacular. the public has been slow to recognize its seriousness. The demonstration treatment-training center located in Eastern Montana College of Education has done much to aid youngsters afflicted with this condition. Here they receive the special therapies as well as education. 1 he presence of the center in a teacher-training institution is of great value It provides a comprehensive laboratory for student teachers who will be faced with problems of the physically handicapped in the public schools. Money for the medical direction and special therapies is provided the Slate Board of Health out of federal funds made available from the United States Children's Society for Crippled Children and Adults. The Montana Chapter receives its funds from the annual Easter Seal Sale Herbert Bor chert, executive director, maintains the central office of the Montana Chapter at the college. I he staff of the center is grateful to Dr. A. G. Coach Alterowttz served notice on the other conference members that Eastern will be the team to beat during the 1950-5 1 basketball grind The Ycllowjackets hardwood five lost but one game on their home court in the 1949-1950 season and that was the 79-77 thriller with Rocky Mountain It was Eastern who turned giant killer when the unbeaten conference leading Western Bulldogs went down to defeat 51-50 in the year's upset. Coach Alterowitz had a number of men of equal ability. F ree substitution of men proved to be one of the major factors in Eastern wins The opposition rarely had substitutions who could adequately replace the starters as they tired, while Eastern constantly placed rested men into the fray.
