MONT PLEASANT HIGH VOL.52 mom i! !i!i!i!i j i! i!i;: i j i i FACULTY The theme for this Year Book is, “School Spirit.” The students of Mont Pleasant High School show their “School Spirit” in many ways. They show it by their participation in our Clubs, Athletic Teams, Musical Organizations, our Marching Rand and Color Guard, Key Club, Student Board, and by participating in so many worthwhile community' services. Through this our students learn the art of help- ing and serving. Our students are what makes Mont Pleasant High School what it is. They are Mont Pleasant High School. They are here to learn, and then as so many thousands of our graduates have done, they will go forth to serve. Working with and serving our students here at Mont Pleasant High School has been a most enjoyable reward for me. Observing our students grow, mature, and become contributing members of our community is what this is all about. ' hanks for the Memories Both faculty and the students of Mont Pleasant found it very difficult to say good-bye to tiro of the greatest contributors of academic princess and personal endeavors Mont Pleasant teas fortunate enough to see. Mis. Carceran received her bachelors degree at Pairleigh Dickinson University and went on to teach for many years in rural school districts. In 1973, she was hired by Mr. Ludwig (language department chairman) to sene ten yea is with our school. She won two major honors. She was designated “Outstanding Teacher of Foreign Languages in Sew York State, and she won a scholarship from Spanish Heritage to study abroad. Mis. Garceran was advisor to the Spanish Club, and she conducted trips to Spain and Mexico to enrich her students knowledge. She must have done some- thing right because when the National Spanish Jest came along, she could always take great pride in the performance of her students, who o ften ranked top in the nation. Dr. Garceran was a distinguished jurist in the Cuban Supreme Courts where he developed a great passion for education. He went on to SUSY of Albany to earn a masters in Library Science and a PhD in Spanish, hi 1972, he was hired to direct the language labs at Mont Pleasant. While he was here he was advisor to our Spanish Honor Society and showed a keen and helpftil interest in many activities and in the students themselves. Dr. and Mrs. Garceran have retired to the Florida community now. but while they were here they' gave of themselves unselfishly: So we dedicate this book with fond memories of you. May you think of us often and may your thoughts be pleasant. This one’s for you! ZWINGE, AUDRA Mont Pleasant Spirit 1 Mont Pleasant to ns, will always be; ot just a school, but a memory Of all our times spent both the good and the bad; Our most cheerful moments, but also the sad. Walking the halls for four long years, Going to classes with so many fears. Meeting new people and making new friends. Growing up so fast, following the trends. Becoming a part of the M.P. crowd. The red and the white on our side, feeling real proud. Graduation day now not far away Waiting to leave, yet wanting to stay. Knowing now it’s time to be on our own. Afraid of ending up all alone. Having to leave old M.P. and all our good friends, Not knowing if ue'11 ever meet again. But that M.P. spirit, when ue are gone. Will always remain to be carried on. Best Wishes! From the Class of'84! Memories of You Leaving Mont Pleasant is a joyful, yet sad occasion for many high school seniors. The things ue have learned are beyond value. Not only did ue study History, Math, French and Music, but ue learned about people, from people. We learned to feel for others and think for ourselves. Over the years ue have seen many tragedies; the hostages in Iran, Faulkland Island episode. Mr. Goldstein’s sudden death, and Mark Lyons. But the years did not pass without their good times. We saw our football team stomp the swamp’’ many times, the Marching band's musical expertise triumph over Mohanasen's and all the individual victories that helped us to grow as a person, but most of all let us know that ue were ok. ” When ue thought ue were pushed to the limit they took our hand and brought us one step further. Behind all the mountains we have climbed, all the battlefields we have conquered there teas a caring, gentle hand to guide us through. We ivould like to extend our gratitude to all those teachers, coaches, counselors and drill directors that took the time to understand and be a friend. Without you how couUl we have come so far? By the time they got to play C.B.A. the teams’ spirit was relaxed, perhaps even a bit over confident. The game against C.B.A., although close, was probably the best game of the season. Everything seemed to be perfect as Mont Pleas- ant went on to a 7-6 win over the Brothers. The team spirit dwindled as the year went on because of losses, but morale was high for the Linton game. The game is special to the teams, faculty, and student body of both schools because of the pride and memories generated by the game. JUNIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS 1 u FOOTBALL FEVER . . . These athletes have demonstrated athletic excellence in their sport; competing not only in N. Y. State but nationally. The three that were chosen were James Graham, Todd Lamont Williams and Rhonda Phillips. Rhonda Phillips, a senior at M.P., is a very accomplished track athlete. Rhonda has been running track for four years, starting in the ninth grade. Being a special athlete, she has Todd Lamont Williams, a senior, is known not only for his excellent performance in football, but for his astounding record in the triple jump. Todd has spent 5 years in varsity track at Mont Pleasant. In those five years Todd has perfected his skill as a successful triple-jumper, to compete with the best in the state and nation. Track has influenced Todd as a person. When I asked him what it has done for him, he replied that “It made him feel independent, confident, and also helps him to set goals for himself.” Track makes Todd feel in control and important because of his knowledge of it. Todd’s future goals for the sport include: 1. Break outdoor track record for triple jump. 2. Win triple at the Eddy Meet. 3. Become a State Champion. When I asked Todd why he felt he was a special athlete he replied, “Because my accomplishments prove me to be special. ” Record of Accomplishments Empire States — 11 Yr. 4th place for triple jump 10 Yr. 5th place for triple jump Mont Pleasant Indoor Track record 44'6 Junior Olympics —10 Yr. 5th in nation (14-15 yr. old) triple jump 11 Yr. 6th in nation (16-17yr. old) Eastern States ’ Championships 1983 Indoor Track Meet 6th on the East Coast M.P. SPECIAL ATHLETES progressed in her sport, gaining the reputation of a profes- sional athlete. Rhonda runs track because she thinks it makes her a better person, keeps her out of trouble and she likes being competitive. Rhonda takes her training very seriously. She feels that to make it as a good athlete you have to work a little harder than you’re expected to. Along with the work that her coach. Nelson Griffin III, provides for her, she does independent training. Being of the female gender, I asked Rhonda how she feels about girls in sports. Rhonda feels that girls do not participate enough for ade- quate recognition. I asked Rhonda why she felt she was a special athlete. Rhonda said, “A loss will not phase me as long as I gave 100'. ” Which proves that attitude has a lot to do with being a special athlete. Rhonda hopes to keep progressing in her senior year. Record of Accomplishments FRESHMAN YEAR—qualified for the N. Y.S. Champion- ships and Empire State Games. SOPHOMORE YEAR—set records in outdoor track in the 200m. with 25.1 and 400m. with 56.1 Third in the nation at the Jr. Olympics at the 400m. Hurdles. JUNIOR YEAR—set a record of 1.34 in the indoor 600m. Broke indoor track records in the 45m. hurdles and 600m. Holds Section II outdoor records in 200m., 400m., 100m. and 400m. hurdles. She competed in the 400m. hurdles at the Jr. Nationals and the Jr. Olympics finishing 5th and 4th respectfully. Made Athlete of the Year by the Schenectady County Council. James Graham is a senior at Mont Pleasant and an accom- plished boxer. James began boxing in the summer of '82 at the Schenectady Y.M. C. A. James began boxing because he says boxing is competitive and takes a lot of coordination, skill and courage. When asked what boxing has done for him; James replied that it has kept him in good shape, keeps him disciplined and helps him to make sound decisions. James ’ future goals is to make it to the ’84 or '88 Olympics. He feels strongly that he has the potential and motivation to make it. When I asked James why he felt he was a special athlete he said, “Because I learn from my defeats, I will be called the best. ” Record of Accomplishments Empire State Trials —1st open l S ]1 in Adirondack Region Golden Gloves—Lost Novice Fighter Schenectady Regional Trials — Won over in ] Adirondack Region Colorado National— Won 2 out of 3 bouts Championships I Wt. class 125) leads to Olympic Trials Lake Placid Trials — Walkover James is ranked in the top 10 in the U.S. for his Wt.
