Dr. Hughes, Guidance Department Head QUESTION: How do. current trends in economics affect your program? ANSWER: Current economic trends have affected Mont Pleasant’s Guidance Program primarily in the seriousness of students decisionmaking. Considering the costs of higher education, the small job market and fewer opportunities to “find yourself for awhile”, modern day students are per- haps more appre hensive about their future. Although, career choice is, in fact, a series of career choices, the modern student is concerned about committing him or her- self to a career goal for fear that might “not work out.” QUESTION: How have you found ways to supplement your budget for books, materials and supplies? ANSWER: Budget and supplies to date have not been a problem. It may become a problem as the guidance field in New York State moves toward a “curricular base.” QUESTION: What do you predict will be the overall effect of these times on our students at MPHS? ANSWER: These times will probably affect our students in that they will be more conservative in outlook and willing to take less chances. They will probably choose to attend more State Colleges and Community Colleges and study those things that will “lead to a job.” As a group they will probably suffer more adult anxiety than their parents. Mr. Courtney, Miss Angione, Dr. Hughes, Mr. Salemme, Mr. Conway Department head—Dr. Hughes
