on in m vO cn ■ In the past years the yearbook has dealt with the basic theme of school and academics. Because the times have changed, the issue of economy and money has crept into what we do and how we feel. We must now overcome the economic obstacles that keep us from doing what we en- deavor to do. $v v The 1983 Yearbook is to be a special yearbook because it will mark this year in our minds and our hearts as the year the yearbook touched on reality. The reality of the economic and political world outside of the controlled atmosphere of Mont Pleasant. We want this yearbook to reflect in 10 to 20 years the tone and nature of these times. We endeavor to show, with your support, what the chancy ing times have done and will do to us all. — 1983 VOL. 51 Along with a brand new set of seniors for the year ’83, we also have a new principal. Mr. LeClair, principal at Mont Pleasant for many years, is handing over the controls from the school to Mr. Mauro, who was the former principal at Steinmetz. The yearbook staff, curious about the attitude and the ideas the new and somewhat experienced principal would bring, took the time to do an interview; close up and per- sonal. These are some of the answers we got. We asked him what kind of a principal he was going to try to be. He said: “A fair one, a principal that sets down a guideline that everyone must follow.” For as he stated, “A rule that is not going to be followed is useless.” These rules he intends to enforce with an iron fist if necessary. We talked with him briefly about how the recent budget cuts would affect his goals for the school, which are: “I want Mont Pleasant to be the best possible school in all facets that it can possibly be. The soon to be principal of Mont Pleasant stated that the budget cuts would mean “less dollars to do other things with,” such as, taking the football or the baseball team on a trip. He also stated that “If you have just so much money and you are paying each person more, you are having fewer teachers that you can put on your staff, so we’re all suffer- ing under this inflation.” The principal gave the yearbook staff the impression that he will be an understanding, active principal, who will work in cooperation with faculty and students alike. Good luck, Mr. Mauro. To quote your own advice to your succes- sor, “Be patient, stick to it and don’t give up.” MR. LECLAIR THANK YOU FOR ALL THE GOOD TIMES YOU'VE SHARED WITH US AT MP. - r V % MONT PLEASANT BUSINESSES Interview with Thomas Nuzback, President of the Crane St. Merchants Association Mont Pleasant High School students tend to be high consumers at the Mont Pleasant diners and bakeries rather than the clothing and hardware stores. Mr. Nuzback personally employs two MPHS students and finds our students who work in the local business areas to be outstanding employees. He also observes that current economics have produced less part-time job oppor- tunities for students who may need to work. In response to a question regarding economic trends, Mr. Nuzback feels consumers have become very price con- scious. The opening of the Crane St. Coop has helped gen- erate a better business flow in the area, yet it’s clear times are tough. DOWNTOWN SCH’DY Harry Rector, a leading downtown businessman and head of the downtown business association, was recently interviewed by the yearbook staff. Mr. Rector is a businessman who believes that you can’t make it anywhere, let alone downtown, without hard work and deter- mination. He feels that Schenectady is on its way to a good recovery. It is doing well right now, he thinks, but “kids are still somewhat mall-oriented but that too, is changing.” When you go into malls, he says that “you see stores that are empty.” He feels that the new apartments and new stores coming into downtown might create again the hub of activity Schenectady was in the past. Mr. Rector hires about one-third of Mont Pleasant students from the overall percentage. He says that his business is mostly from the working girl who has her first job and has two or three hundred dollars to spend. The most interesting thing about Mr. Rector was his philoso- phy on kids. He believes that kids are basically the same. It’s the teachers who have changed. They’ve become apathetic, unhappy people who feel they should be getting more. He doesn’t believe that school work and sports should be a problem. He says that most sports are only about two months. If a kid really wants to be in that sport, he will arrange his needs. He hopes that kids and teachers will shake off the deep sleep they’re in and start to care again about school and each other. t o z Mr. Mauro Mr. Robinson Mr Robinson, Mr. Severino, Mr. Mauro, Mr. Neils ADMINISTRATION Department head —Mr. O’Connor Mrs. Baratier, Mr. O’Connor, Art Dept. Head QUESTION: How do current trends in economics affect your program at MPHS? ANSWER: Art supply funds have continued to decline. This requires art teachers to be more creative, frugal and limited in their art class experiences. QUESTION: How have you found ways to supplement your budget for books, materials and supplies? ANSWER: We have tried to be innovative in the use of materials and it is possible that fund raising projects will be needed as well as charging students for use of expensive materials (clay, metals, etc.) if they wish to keep certain art projects. QUESTION: What do you predict will be the overall effect of these times on our students at MPHS? ANSWER: If the trend of American education (less than 300 years) follows that of Europe, we will find education being limited to those who really want it and eventually a much wiser attitude toward any wealth of materials which America might have. We are an economy of waste, whereas Europe has become an economy of need. We are headed in that direction. Mrs. Willard, ART Ms. Rovce, Mrs. Faulisi. Mr. Pause, Mrs. Conway Custodial Staff Mary Dutcher Elisa Coppola Veronica Kotalik Mr. Eigabroadt, English Department QUESTION: How do current trends in economics affect you program at MPHS? ANSWER: Current economic trends force us to do more with far less purchasing power. Our reading program has been affected somewhat through a reduction in federal funding. We are no longer able to provide reading lab for all students with special reading needs. QUESTION: How have you found ways to supplement your budget for books, materials and supplies? ANSWER: During the past three years, our department has received some supplements and assistance from a gen- erous central administration and school board. We have utilized special funding as it has come along, and as it has been made available to us. QUESTION: What do you predict will be the overall effect of these times on our students at MPHS? ANSWER: There should be little effect on our students for they are not likely to have been aware of any “good old days.” They also will not be likely to realize how today’s faculty use an extreme amount of personal and professional dedication to replace dollars that either are declining or are no longer available. Miss Farbstein, Mrs. Barton, Mrs. Merrow, Mrs. Sarachan Mr. DiNola, Dr. Elcott, Mr. Eigabroadt, Mrs. Frese, Mrs. Morse. Miss Dwyer, Mrs. Foster, Miss Seckerson. Miss Matura, Mrs. Wolcptt, Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Beardsley Missing—Mrs. Gross, Mrs. Spina Department head —Mr. Eigabroadt ENGLISH Dr. Hughes, Guidance Department Head QUESTION: How do. current trends in economics affect your program? ANSWER: Current economic trends have affected Mont Pleasant’s Guidance Program primarily in the seriousness of students decisionmaking. Considering the costs of higher education, the small job market and fewer opportunities to “find yourself for awhile”, modern day students are per- haps more appre hensive about their future. Although, career choice is, in fact, a series of career choices, the modern student is concerned about committing him or her- self to a career goal for fear that might “not work out.” QUESTION: How have you found ways to supplement your budget for books, materials and supplies? ANSWER: Budget and supplies to date have not been a problem. It may become a problem as the guidance field in New York State moves toward a “curricular base.” QUESTION: What do you predict will be the overall effect of these times on our students at MPHS? ANSWER: These times will probably affect our students in that they will be more conservative in outlook and willing to take less chances. They will probably choose to attend more State Colleges and Community Colleges and study those things that will “lead to a job.” As a group they will probably suffer more adult anxiety than their parents. ANSWER: We do not get all the materials we need caus- ing our students to purchase workbooks. QUESTION: How have you found ways to supplement your budget for books, materials and supplies? ANSWER: Because of my wide contacts as a professional, I am able to procure many supplementary materials from this country and over seas without charge. QUESTION: What do you predict will be the overall effect of these times on our students at MPHS? ANSWER: They will learn the value of money and how to cope with less. Department head —Mr. Ludwig Mrs. Schock, Mrs. McMullen, Mr. Ludwig, Mrs. Muller, Mrs. Garceran missing—Mr. Garceran, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Arendt FOREIGN LANGUAGE Dr. Burdick, Math Department 1. How do current trends in economics effect your program at MPHS? We have had to ask the Board of Education to appropriate special funds for computer equipment. Our regular Mont Pleasant equipment budget could not support such pur- chases. The Board of Education reponded by giving us special funds to meet our computer needs as far as equip- ment is concerned. 2. How have you found ways to supplement your budget for books, materials and supplies? We never have enough funds for all the textbooks we would like. However, we always manage to get by. An example of this is our advanced computer class. In this class, two lan- guages are taught but we only have textbooks for only one of the languages. Some supplies, such as computer disks, are purchased by the students themselves. 3. What do you predict will be the overall effect of these times on our students at MPHS? The School District is now at its constitutional tax limit. Each year, we have to go to the New York State Legislature and ask for special funds. So far, the legislature has always come to our rescue, sometimes at just the last minute. This makes long range planning very difficult. If the Legislature ever fails to come to our rescue, we will be in very serious trouble. We will not have the funds to support the fine pro- grams which we have developed and are now developing. MATH Mrs. Daniels, Mr. Heap, Dr. Burdick Mr. Chapin, Mr. Gatta, Mr. Bailey, Mr. Bartlette, Mr. Serapilio, Mr. Gill Department head—Dr. Burdick Mr. Hallenbeck, Music Dept. Head QUESTION: How do current trends in economics affect your program at MPHS? ANSWER: The entire Marching Program is funded by fund raising events sponsored by the Band Booster Club. If the economy gets bad, our fund raising events don’t succeed as well. As a result, we lose our purchasing power for the equipment that we need and we are not able to hire the staff that is needed to instruct the band. QUESTION: How have you found ways to supplement your budget for books, materials and supplies? ANSWER: The band plays for parades and marches for half-time shows at area colleges. With the efforts and help of the Band Booster Club, we are able to supplement our budget. QUESTION: What do you predict will be the overall effect of these times on our students at MPHS? ANSWER: The economy could eventually lead to the folding of the Marching Program. This may result partially because the school district does not fund much of the pro- gram. The Booster Club picks up the biggest share of the expenses. If they cannot get the support from the community, the band will have no choice but to discon- tinue the program. Head QUESTION: How do current trends in economics affect your program at MPHS? ANSWER: We do not have all the funds we need for sup- plies and books but this has always been the case as long ago as I can remember. QUESTION: How have you found ways to supplement your budget for books, materials and supplies? ANSWER: No. We are sharing books, materials, etc. I make do with what we have but have not found any other source of funds. QUESTION: What do you predict will be the overall effect of these times on our students at MPHS? ANSWER: Some may find it more difficult to buy school materials or attend school activities if their parents become unemployed. Some families may have to move from our area for work. As far as our department funds are concerned, I do not foresee any great problem in our teachers providing a quality program. Much of what we do does not require sophisticated equipment or expensive materials. Perhaps these hard times may have a solving effect on our students and encourage them to take school more seriously. The job market is very competitive today. SOCIAL STUDIES Mr. Bydairk, Mr. Lemon, Mr. Suprunowicz Mr. Laliberte, Mr. Campbell, Mrs. Wolcott, Mr. Lotano, Mrs. Foster, Mr. Grinnell, Mr. Aldi Department head— Mr. Grinnell Mr. Oleneziak QUESTION: How do current trends in economics effect your program at MPHS? ANSWER: My classes are much too large to achieve our teaching objectives. This is due to cut-backs in the teach- ing staff. QUESTION: How have you found ways to supplement your budget for books, materials and supplies? ANSWER: We have implemented a new book numbering system which attempts to retrieve all textbooks. We use fine money as petty cash. QUESTION: What do you predict will be the overall ef- fect of these times on our students at MPHS? ANSWER: Students will become more aware of our na- tional economic situation because it will affect ;heir day- to-day lives in school SCIENCE Mrs. Szczepanski, Mrs. Fuerst, Miss Sagendorf Mr. Rizzo, Mr. Scampini, Mr. Oleniczak, Mr. Provost missing— Mr. Mancinelli Department head —Mr. Oleniczak TECHNICAL Mr. Caldaro, Mr. Alescio, Mr. Severino, Mr. Hudson Mr. Newton Department head —Mr. Severino RESOURCE TEACHERS SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST Mrs. Cafarelli missing—Mr. Alexander, Mr. Goldberg Mrs. Bartle SCHOOL AIDS Andrew Pettness Interview With School Officials In pursuing economics as the theme of the yearbook, the 1982-1983 staff made an appointment to see Dr. Frank Mayer, superintendent of Schenectady City School District and Mrs. Ward, president of the School Board. We asked Dr. Mayer and Mrs. Ward many questions about the pres- ent economic status. One issue addressed was the current problem with gov- ernmental responsibility in subsidizing public education. Mrs. Ward commented that theoretically both government and state should equally share the cost of educating the children of New York State with localities paying the re- maining share. Mrs. Ward feels that both the federal gov- ernment and state have shifted this burden to the local governments. Whenever there is a cut in funding programs by the state or federal government there are two options. Either localities pick up the tab for these programs or they are cut. When asked for his opinion about the trend of lower enrollment and the problem the school district now faces in financing education for Schenectady city students Dr. Mayer responded, “Right now it’s in the hands of the legis- lature in terms of how schools are going to be financed in the future. We do have a problem in our school district that surrounding districts don’t have. That’s the problem with taxes and the declining property values as well as the declin- ing population in the city. I think to a certain extent the two go hand in hand. It does make it more difficult for us as a city school district to finance education in many ways. I think the city children deserve more than some suburban children because for a large percent of them, their public school education will be the only preparation they will have to go into the job market. 1 think for those of us in the city it’s a doubly difficult problem and the consequences are in some ways doubly serious. I think right now all we can do is wait to see how the legislature is going to approach tax base issues and press for those solutions which would be a benefit to the city school district.” City taxes are spent on many things concerning the school district and its city residents. For example, the reno- vation of Schenectady schools. When asked if Schenectady schools would see more renovation Dr. Mayer responded, “There is a continuous maintenance and renovation going on, on a small scale somewhere at any given time of the year in the district. Interior painting and roofing needs will be taken care of, plumbing needs or maybe subdividing a room to make it more effective for remedial purposes is always going on.” Along with this constant up-grading of Schenectady schools, Dr. Mayer, along with the Board of Education has tried very hard to insure that students in Schenectady receive the same quality education as students in other districts. MR. SERAPILIO: The people who really enjoy participat- ing in an activity will find the time to do both. We’ve always had people who would work their work hours around prac- tice and games. STUDENT: Do you think that schools lose athletes on account of students having the responsibility of a job? MR. SERAPILIO: The number of people that participate has been cut down, but there are other factors too. One can be accepted by is peers by doing many things, not just athletics. STUDENT: What types of events are held in order to raise money to support your team? MR. SERAPILIO: We must supplement our budget by selling hats, shirts, and other different items. STUDENT: What aftect will the economy have on sport activities in the future? No no. People enjoy sports. Take the sports on television for instance. The people that want to play, and the people that want to watch, still get out there. row 1 — Paul Moore, Ralph Mitchell, Scott Elia, Tbm Favata, Frank Gallo, John Greco, Todd Messitt, John Rysedorph, Dom DiCarlo. row 2 —Mark Palmer, Bob Frank, Drew Pivacek, JV Marion, Jeff Turck, Paul DeCarlo, Todd Williams, Peter Bourdeau, John Nicol, Brian Rector, Jack Remillard, Walt Howard. row 3 —Head Coach Serapilio, Coach McGrath, Tyke Phil- lips, Jim Gage, Wayne Adams, Mike Nasters, Towie Adams, Mike Cerrone, Coach Frame, David DiCarprio, Patrick Weglowski, Joe Marra, Steve Kent, Joe Pisano, D. OZAROWSKI: My feeling is that if a student must work and would still like to participate in a sport activity, it’s possible. STUDENT: Do you think that schools lose athletes on account of students having the responsibility of a job? MRS. OZAROWSKI: The Mont Pleasant Sports Program is definitely hurt by the fact that students must work. STUDENT: What types of events are held in order to raise money to support your team? MRS. OZAROWSKI: Many teachers, with the help of the Booster Club, raise the money to support the team. Some events that the Booster Club sponsors are: the spring car- nival, food sales at basketball and football games, and hav- ing the students sell candy. STUDENT: What effect will the economy have on sport activities in the future? MRS. OZAROWSKI: Money is definitely tight right now, and it will probably become even tighter. I feel that we will really have to fight to save the programs we have, and I guess if we want them bad enough, especially the students, we’ll somehow survive. D. Monato, E. Lawrance, R. MISS FRITZ: Many students do not try out for sports because they are more interested in making money. Many students who need jobs, also play sports, but many do not understand that it may be possible to do both. STUDENT: Do you think that schools lose athletes on account of students having the responsibility of a job? MISS FRITZ: Most students can arrange their schedule to enable themselves to work and to play sports. STUDENT: What types of events are held in order to raise money to support your team? MISS FRITZ: Many coaches have their athletes sell candy, and other products to raise money to supplement the initial budget. STUDENT: What affect will the economy have on sport activities in the future? MISS FRITZ: Less and less money is being allotted to education. Part of education includes inter-scholastics. Athletics is essential to a well-rounded program. If less money is given to schools, one of the first programs to be cut will be athletics. J.V. GIRLS SOCCER TOP: Sandy Schavo, Kim Charton. MR. GRIFFIN: Yes. This is because the track and cross- country teams travel, at times out of state, and need funds to cover their expenses. STUDENT: Do you think that schools lose athletes on account of students having the responsibility of a part-time job? MR. GRIFFIN: Absolutely. I lose many athletes due to the necessity for,or the desire to, work. STUDENT: What types of events are held in order to raise money to support your team? MR. GRIFFIN: The teams have participated in the selling of candy, cookies, and candles. They have also sponsored fifty-fifty raffles in order to increase our funds. STUDENT: What affect will the economy have on sport activities in the future? MR. Griffin; The quality and quantity of equipment and supplies will be lessened as our economy grows worse. The questions of when, where, and how will be harder to answer with the knowledge of having limited funds. In turn, this makes the duties and responsibilities of coaching harder. Comments from Mr. Bleau Varsity Basketball Coach STUDENT: Do you think that schools lose athletes on account of students having the responsibility of a job? MR. BLEAU: No. I don’t feel that we lose dedicated players. I feel that students who use work as an excuse not to try out for sports team know deep down that they really don’t want to play. STUDENT: What types of events are held in order to raise money to support your team? MR. BLEAU: A big bazaar is held in the spring of the year, and most of the coaches work countless hours to help. Other fund raising projects that we hold are raffles and bake sales. STUDENT? What effect will the economy have on sport activities in the future? MR. BLEAU: At the present time, it is becoming harder for sports programs to sustain yearly cuts. In order for clubs to be successful, we must return to the economic priorities of the past. We must increase rather than decrease the budgets for sports programs.
