To understand others, to appreciate the sun's rays beaming through a gossamer of forest, to reach out and love, to be sincere . . . we must first seize our own being, probe into the abyss of our own emo- tions, .feel being loved, understand and appreciate ourselves. Though we are cast into the grasp of a conforming society, we still are. And our being has an impor- tance. We can diffuse into that main- stream of conformity and reconcile our- selves to an easy life, careful not to stem the tide. Or . . , we can realize a consci- ence, a drive, a commitment, a strength that will empower us to be true to our- selves. We have been already tossed into the throes of a suppressing situation, one where the individual is hardly recognized, it will be a struggle to maintain our identi- ty. We are able, though, to survive. Through apathy, - concern, insolence - appreciation, conformity - individuality. As a persistent surf, oblivious to the rocks, the shore, the gulls, the storm, certain in its ways .. . so, too, shall we be. For to appreciate, understand, love the unique and fascinating people and life around us we must first know ourselves . . . Wx
