' ig, L a UTILITARIAN ACHIEVEMENTS The purpose of the Home Economics Department at Mont Pleasant is not only to teach pupils to cook and to sew, but also to understand themselves. By being able to understand themselves, they will be able to understand others more effectively. Since work is done informally in these classes, students acquire self discipline. Because there are no special groupings, people of varied abilities are able to work together. The Industrial Arts program plays an important role for students interested in shop work and me- chanics. In his freshman year, a student may take a course in Industrial Arts to become oriented with the field. If he chooses, he may continue his studies with Auto and Aviation mechanics in his next two years. Students are divided according to their me- chanical ability, and different groups will be work- ing on a project at one time. Students are carefully supervised by the shop teachers who observe their individual efforts and potential for vocational work after high school. From the Physical Education Department we ac- quire the skills to improve our mental alertness, physical fitness and health education classes. Exer- cise is, of course, the first consideration but also, under the auspices of this department, health educa- tion classes add a knowledge of hygiene. Affiliated with our Physical Education Program is driver education, which is a twenty Weeks, course. Driver Education is our school's most popular elec- tive because it is a safe way for our pupils to learn the technique of becoming cautious and conscientious drivers. Another important part of the school curriculum is the Business Education Department under the leadership of Mr. Delbert Collis. There are over one thousand potential secretaries, stenographers, cashiers, file clerks, and business machine operators who are presently being trained in these various skills. The subjects offered in this department range from classes in business machines to shorthand, all of which are designed to aid the students in his p1'Cp8I'2'ltiOI1 f0I' 8 CHICCT.
