11 Mr. Neiderberger takes time out to go into detail about a certain point in World History. Q t A ef, A Glenn Simek finds out that notetaking is an important part of learning American History. ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS Our Academic Achievements section is composed of the English, Math, Social Studies, Language and Science Departments. Each of these departments plays an important part in the lives of all who enter the gates at Mont Pleasant. The English Department initiated a new book system to aid the students in getting the most out of material covered. Also, a greater emphasis is being put on literature. Much has been written in the past few years about the new mathematics . The meaning of this phrase is that not only new topics are taught but also that the traditional topics in mathematics are taught from a new viewpoint. The underlying pur- pose of this new viewpoint is to teach the student the understanding of the operation which he is using as well as the technique of performing them. The sweeping changes are introduced so that the students leaving Mont Pleasant for institutions of higher learn- ing will have the best preparation possible for future work in mathematics. The main objective of the Citizenship Education Department is to increase international understand- ing on the part of each student. A concept of the progress of mankind and a reasonable knowledge of world history are the department's equally worthy objectives. Finally, the preparation of students to assume the role of responsible citizenship has al- ways been a fundamental goal. This year marked the beginning of MP's unique activated laboratory for language study. The elaborately designed installation, which has lab- oratory earphones at each student position and a console from which the teacher can tune in on any student he chooses for evaluation, is an important adjunct to an already famous and well-established program. Last but not least, our Science Department is one department which becomes more and more important in our modern world. Mont Pleasant's science depart- ment has been improved and enlarged in order to keep up with the rapid scientific pace. All of the science curriculums have been brought up-to-date. Besides having new equipment in the departments of biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, biologi- cal science, and physical science rooms, the stu- dents are also benefited by many new courses.

One of the most important of these is that which leads to the Technical Department. The programs in this department offer courses of specialization in both the electrical and mechanical technologies. These form an integral part of the curriculum at Mont Pleasant High School. The College Preparatory Technical Program is designed as a challenge for the above-average stu- dent. It is the most rigorous scholastic program of- fered, and it provides the student with a full aca- demic college preparatory course plus the technol- ogies. The newly-inaugurated four year technical pro- gram, which admits ninth grade students to Mont Pleasant, enables those selected at the end of eighth grade. to prepare for Advanced Placement courses in their senior year. Presently, there are selected eleventh graders taking basic courses in physics and mathematics which will lead to Advanced Place- ment Physics and Calculus as seniors. To provide for an expanded four-year program, the science and technical laboratories have been enlarged and renovated. New laboratory facilities and experiences in the Technical Department add to enrichment of the program and to the prepara- tion of students for college or the technical branches of industry. Thus, the College Preparatory Technical program is, indeed, one of the many Gates to Achievement.
