PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE TO SENIORS For three years you have walked in and out of the main office, and I wonder if you ever stopped to read the “Oath of the Young Men of Athens. Athens was the first and greatest democracy. Young men were trained physically, mentally and morally. The ideal was a strong mind in a sound body. When the young men reached the age of 18, they took the following oath: “We will never bring disgrace to this our city by any act of dishonesty, of cowardice nor ever desert our suffering comrades in the ranks. We will fight for the ideals and sacred things of the city, both alone and with many; we will revere and obey the city’s law and do our best to incite a like respect in reverence in those above us who are prone to annul or set them at naught; we will strive unceasingly to quicken the public's sense of civic duty. Thus in all these ways we will transmit this city not only not less but greater, better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us. I quoted this oath to you in the hope that you will read it and study it. In the years to come it might become a part of your philosophy. MR. GEORGE W. At present there are thirty-six mem' bers who are elected from a recommended list. Mem- bers are chosen from all three years in high school and act as assistant librarians. They work in the library each week shelving books and magazines, mending books and preparing new books for the shelves. They also help at the desk taking care of circulation. CADET TEACHERS The high school cadet teaching program was designed to give students interested in becoming teachers, nurses, sociologists or school psychologists an oppor- tunity to get acquainted with children. As the cadets work with classroom teachers in various elementary 'hey 'earn to understand characteristics of children at different ages, to recognize individual and group needs. From among forty or fifty candidates each year who seek membership, present members elect their new members. Candidates must maintain a “C average and carry at least three commercial subjects. These quali' fications have enabled the group to accomplish its objective of stimulating and promoting interest in projects that will assist promising commercial pupils in their efforts. Social and recreational opportunities are also a definite part of the Club's program, thereby developing the personality and initiative of individuals comprising this group. MISS MAY WILSON—Sponsor. OFFICE WORKERS’ CLUB The OFFICE WORKERS’ CLUB consists of the pupils who work in the various offices trhoughout the school. There pupils gain two objectives through- their activities. They contribute materially to the success of the office work in the school, and they receive valuable experience in the nature and routine of office work. WATCHTOWER HOMEROOM REPRESENTATIVES The WATCHTOWER HOME ROOM REPRE' SENTATIVES sell and distribute the WATCH' TOWER throughout the school. CURRENT EVENTS CLUB The CURRENT EVENTS CLUB aims to develop citizens who are capable of making accurate judgments on the affairs of the world. KEY CLUB The KEY CLUB was chartered in January 1948 by the Schenectady Kiwanis Club. The purpose of the KEY CLUB is to serve as a Mont Pleasant High School service club. The club meets for luncheon every Thursday in the special dining room. Two club mem bers are invited as guests of the Kiwanis Club each week at the Hotel Van Curler. TECHNICAL MECHANICAL SENIORS These are the Seniors in the college preparatory TECHNICAL MECHANICAL COURSE. With the training received here at Mont Pleasant, these boys are prepared for a number of career possibilities. They can seek apprenticeship training as a designer, machin ist or laboratory technician in any of the local indus- tries: they may seek regular employment in local plants or they may enter any of the engineering colleges in this country. ATHLETIC COUNCIL The ATHLETIC COUNCIL is the executive com- rnittec of the Mont Pleasant High School Athletic Association. The ATHLETIC COUNCIL was organ iied in September 1931 for the promotion and admin- istration of interscholastic athletics. The sports pro- gram includes football, cross-country, basketball, wrest- ling, indoor track, skiing, bowling, golf, tennis, base- ball, and outdoor track. Membership on the ATH- LETIC COUNCIL is limited to fifteen pupils and four faculty members. The GIRLS' ATHLETIC CLUB has made seven loans to members who have gone on to college to major in the field of health and physical education. It has also provided the financial means for such projects as permanent colored spotlights for the girls gym, varsitv suits, typewriter for the gym office, record plaver and amplifier for the gym, transportation to interscholastic events, and athletic awards for girls. A ■ J FRENCH CLUB Many high school students study French, and many of them have a lively interest in the French people, their culture, their customs. In order to provide a place where pupils with this interest in France can enjoy a close contact with French civilization and at the same time improve their ability to speak French, the FRENCH CLUB was formed in 1932 by Miss Miriam Groat. HEALTH GUIDANCE CLUB The HEALTH GUIDANCE CLUB promotes mod' eration in physical, emotional, and social health. The club was organized by Miss Eleanor Kelly in 1934. Since then, it has particiapted in many worthwhile causes, and has helped finance many projects. MISS ELEANOR KELLY—Sponsor. ART CLUB The ART CLUB was organized with the idea of undertaking projects which will be of service to the school and at the same time give the members a chance to have fun doing art work. New members arc chosen from students in the art classes who have satis- factory marks in art. Most of the work has been to make posters for dances, games, and parties. WATCHTOWER STAFF To publish a newspaper serving the best needs of Mont Pleasant High School is the aim of the jour- nalists who make Room 141 their headquarters. The WATCHTOWER staff writes and edits ten six-page issues annually. Besides the editorial staff, there is the advertising staff under the direction of an advertising manager. In past years the paper has won high positions in the contests conducted by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and the New York State School Press Association. The society also tries to promote a feeling of world-mindedness among its mem' bers. Since its founding, the LATIN HONORARY SOCIETY has aided children in Europe, assisted in the support of a French school, and for two years has cooperated with the Junior Chamber of Commerce in carrying out the Medway Plan for helping French children. Schaefer is the man who discovered how to seed supercooled clouds with dry ice and make them produce snow and rain . . . who has de- veloped a number of meteorological instru- ments, including a “cloud meter” which automatically measures the amounts of water in a cloud . . . who, during the war, helped develop smoke generators, gas- mask filters, submarine detectors. By any standards, he ranks as a true scientist. There’s quite a story in how he “made the grade.” He was forced to end his for- mal education and go to work after com- pleting only two years of high school. Fired with the ambition to be a research scientist, he resolved to overcome his mis- fortune of having to leave school and embarked upon an arduous program of self-study. The “snow-making” scientist first en- tered General Electric as a drill-press operator, shortly thereafter enrolled in the Apprentice Training Course, and then got his first job in the Research Labora- tory — as a machinist, however, not a scientist. His performance record on each job together with his study program helped greatly in moving him closer to his goal as a research scientist. As a result, when Dr. Irving Langmuir, associate di- rector of the Laboratory and a Nobel Prize winner, needed an assistant for an experimental program, Schaefer got the job and thus began his career in science. Since then, his contributions have brought him many honors, the most re- cent of which is the honorary degree of doctor of science conferred on him by Notre Dame University. Yes, this is a “local boy makes good” story. But that is not its real significance. Rather, its real significance lies in its con- firmation of the fact that opportunities al- ways exist for those who have a goal and the perseverance to work towards it—for those to whom obstacles are not bar- riers but rather frontiers to be conquered.
